Abstract

English proficiency is essential for international communication and is highly valued in the industrial world. However, vocational school students often struggle with their English-speaking abilities. To address this issue, a pragmatic approach to English language teaching is proposed. Pragmatics focuses on effective communication by considering cultural contexts and is believed to enhance speaking skills. The study utilizes a case study approach in two vocational schools, collecting data from students and teachers through questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal differences in perceptions between teachers and students, highlighting the students' lack of understanding of teaching activities. The pragmatic approach is seen as a solution to improve students' speaking skills by incorporating language theories into real-life contexts. The study suggests the importance of teacher preparation, comprehensible instruction, and alignment of perceptions between teachers and students for effective teaching of speaking skills. The implementation of the pragmatic approach can be achieved by integrating comprehension of language structures and content, setting specific targets, and utilizing appropriate teaching materials.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how short English cartoon media enhance elementary school students' listening skills, addressing a research gap where previous studies primarily focused on motivation rather than measurable listening performance. This study adopts an embedded mixed-method design, collecting quantitative data via 10-item multiple-choice pre- and post-listening tests, and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. The study involved 26 fifth-grade students at Curug State Elementary School, Serang, Banten. Learners received a cartoon video-based treatment using age-appropriate content such as Dora the Explorer and Peppa Pig. Quantitative results show an increase in average scores from 34.62 (pre-test) to 78.46 (post-test). Qualitative findings reveal that students comprehend material better through video than audio alone, gain new vocabulary, and are more enthusiastic due to the combination of audio, visuals, and on-screen text. These findings support the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Dual Coding Theory, affirming the importance of multimodal approaches for young English learners. Overall, short cartoons are shown to be an effective and enjoyable method to boost listening comprehension and learner motivation. Abstract

Vocational schools provide practical training and technical education for various professions, such as automotive, construction, engineering and healthcare. Language skills are essential for competitiveness in the global era, as students use oral or written communication to share information and experiences. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of communicative competence, needs, and ways to develop students' competence. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that collected data from sixty students, three English teachers, and two officers. The study found that the communicative competence profile of private vocational school students is still low. Some of the factors that influence this condition are teachers' commitment and knowledge, students' competence, and school facilities. In order to be employed by the business world, graduates of private SMK must have several important abilities such as speaking, writing, reading, and have a good understanding of computer languages. These skills are essential to ensure that graduates can create official documents needed in the workplace, understand words and procedures, and communicate effectively. As a result, the growth of these skills will make graduates of private vocational schools more capable and readier to enter the workforce.
