Abstract

Durian, a superior product in North Sumatra, has high economic value and market opportunities. In an effort to develop a durian agribusiness business, the support for the availability of certified quality seeds from superior varieties greatly determines its success. The research aims to develop a nursery business model that is both economical and profitable, catering to the demand for certified quality seedlings and promoting sustainable agricultural development. The study employs a quantitative descriptive method to explain the nursery business's economic feasibility and ensure the sustainability of the provision of certified quality durian seeds. The research was carried out between March and June 2024 in three districts/cities, specifically Binjai, Langkat, and Deli Serdang, where the UPTD (Regional Technical Implementation Unit) of the Horticulture Main Seed Center (BBI) of the Food Security Office of Food Crops and Horticulture of North Sumatra Province operates a farming farm for the propagation of superior durian seeds. The purposive method was used to select a sample of 50 durian seed breeders, with assistance from the UPTD BBI. The data analysis method uses Structure Equition Modeling (SEM) to build the model. The results of the study show that business performance has an effect on local fruit development, the nursery business model has an effect on business performance, and certification has an effect on business performance. Overall, the results of this study show that to ensure the development of local fruits, nursery businesses must develop a business strategy that meets quality and quantity standards so that they can ensure the sustainability of the supply chain from producers to consumers.

Abstract

Rice Blast has been known as the main disease on paddy which has high severity leading to economic loss. Exploring rice resistance can be an effective way to improve productivity and prosperity toward this staple crop. This study aims to determine several local varieties which have potential for productions and resistances. This study used factorial randomized block design (RBD) consisting of 2 factors including plant spacing (25 x 25 cm; 25 x 30 cm; 25 x 40 cm); Upland rice variety MSP 17, Sigambiri Merah, Hamparan Perak and Kambiri Lumat. The results of the study reveal that variety has a significant effect on disease intensity especially Sigambiri Merah but not on Kembiri Lumat. However, there is no significant effect of spacing on blast intensity except in grain weight. Conclusion of this research was the varieties (V) selection of red upland rice is the best strategy to improve rice resistance toward blast disease. Keywords:  Disease density, Paddy, Staple Crop.

Abstract

Typhonium flagelliforme or known as rat taro is a herbaceous plant that belongs to the taro tribe. The results of the phytochemical analysis of the leaves and tuber extracts of rat taro are known to contain secondary metabolite compounds belonging to the class of flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, steroids, saponins, and tannins which act as antimicrobials. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of leaf, stem and tuber extracts of rat taro (Typhonium flagelliforme (Lodd)) as a biofungicide against the cause of leaf fall (Pestalotiopsis sp.) on rubber plants (Hevea brasiliensis). Leaf samples came from rubber plants at PTPN III Karet Sei Putih, Galan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Pestalotiopsis sp. was isolated from plant parts showing leaf fall symptoms. Pieces of rubber leaves infected with Pestalotiopsis sp. was grown on PDA media in a petri dish and incubated for ±7 days at room temperature 26–28oC. After incubation, microscopic identification of the conidia of the fungus was carried out. In vitro test of the inhibition power of extracts of leaves, stems and tubers of rat taro against the fungus Pestalotiopsis sp. was carried out in a petri dish using the fungus culture method. The results of the phytochemical screening showed that the leaf, stem and tuber extracts of rat taro contained chemical compounds of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkoloids, and steroids/triterpenoids. The results showed that the leaves, stems and tuber extracts of rat taro (T. flagelliforme L.) have potential as biofungicides, K13 treatment of tuber extract of rat taro (Typhonium flagelliforme L.) 9% was the best treatment which could inhibit the growth of Pestalotiopsis sp.
