Abstract

This article discusses the implementation of interfaith partnership strengthening activities between Muslims and Baha'is in Riau through the organization of the Diversity Discourse Chat (BIDUK) #01 by ISAIS UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. This activity argues that interfaith partnerships in resolving religious relationship issues can be conducted not only through formal approaches facilitated by the state but also through both informal and formal encounters of each community and the willingness to discuss problems related to religious relationships, including sensitive topics. In this regard, ISAIS UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau facilitates periodic discussions packaged through the BIDUK program, which addresses issues of diversity governance in Indonesia. The BIDUK #01 discussion was held as an effort to strengthen mutual understanding between Bahá'ís and Muslims in Riau in addressing issues related to the religious relations of both communities. In the end, the BIDUK discussion contributed to broadening the horizons of each community's members, showing that differences in religious beliefs do not hinder the partnership between Muslims and Bahá'ís in Riau in addressing national issues related to religious relations in Indonesia.

Abstract

The following article explores the ways in which Bakoba oral literary cultures in Malay Riau, Indonesia, are being kept alive through performance. The author argues that the oral literary tradition that is an integral component of the cultural identity of the Malay people of Riau is in threat of losing out due to the pressures of modernity and the efforts that have been made to regenerate the tradition. In-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies were carried out in Rokan Hulu, which is located in the province of Riau, as part of this study, which employs a qualitative approach to data gathering methodologies. The findings of the study highlight the complicated features of the Bukoba transmission process as well as the difficulties that are encountered by dealers. The research also revealed that the rapid growth of technology and modernity led to a shrinking of the arena for traders to display Bukoba oral traditions in public areas. This resulted in a decrease in the number of public venues where these traditions were displayed. In the end, the writing arrived at the conclusion that the presence of the state was required in order to revitalise the oral literary heritage of the Malay Riau community in an effort to confront extinction. This conclusion was reached at the end of the writing.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The following essay examines post-Islamism in post-reform Indonesia by focusing on contestation in the remaking of the Islamic public sphere. I argue that the public sphere is not only an arena of contestation between Islamists and secularists, but also among the proponents of social movements that mobilize Islam as a source of legitimacy. In the first section, I present a brief review of the notion of post-Islamism and Islamic public sphere as categories of analysis to examine the dynamics of Islam in Indonesia. Next, I explain the topography of Islamic movements in contemporary Indonesia. Post-Islamist contestation in the remaking of the Indonesian Islamic public sphere is examined in the third section. It is limited to four topics, i.e. the dynamics of Muslim intellectual movements, post-Islamist women’s activism and piety movements, Islamic visibility in pop culture, and discourses of shari’a implementation in Aceh. Finally, the article concludes that the dynamics of Indonesian post-Islamists and their contestation are not only helping to strengthen the praxis of democracy in the post-reform era, but they are also diverting public attention from the temptation of radicalism and violence in the name of religion.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i3.2412
Moving out of Islam on YouTube: Acehnese Christian Narratives, the Public Sphere, and Counterpublics in Indonesia Ansor, Muhammad

Abstract

This study examines the public sphere and the formation of counterpublics based on the narratives of former Muslims from Aceh who converted to Christianity on YouTube. This study argues that in addition to strengthening the distinct attributes of Islamic identity in the public sphere, YouTube enables Acehnese former Muslims, as a subaltern community, to negotiate new social identities and share religious experiences after conversion. It also explores how Acehnese former Muslims challenge the dominant culture and restrictive regulations in Aceh, which perceive religious conversions as heresy and unlawful conduct. Data were collected using the digital ethnographic technique from four of the YouTube narratives of twelve Acehnese former Muslims who had converted to Christianity. The findings indicate that the online public sphere enhances the autonomy and their capacity to negotiate their Acehnese social identity, which is closely constructed with Islam. The presence of YouTube content thus contributes to strengthening the development of democracy and freedom of religious practice in Indonesia.
