Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the competencies of teachers in the Indonesia–Malaysia border area through the application of a Deep Learning-based instructional approach to address the challenges of 21st-century skills. The implementation employed the Co-M-F-oR-T method (coaching, mentoring, facilitation, and training), involving 23 teachers in Bengkayang Regency as participants. The evaluation instruments consisted of questionnaires analyzed descriptively. The results of the program indicate an improvement in participants’ understanding by 75% and an 80% effectiveness rate in mentoring activities. These findings demonstrate that the mentoring process was effective and contributed to improving teachers’ knowledge and competencies in developing teaching modules based on the Deep Learning approach.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning and imagery of Pay Jarot Sujarwo’s poem entitled “Kekasih, Kemarau Kali Ini Tidak Ada Jingga, Tidak Ada Jingga” and to describe its relevance as a teaching material for literature courses. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a structural analysis of the poem’s content. The theoretical framework of this study draws on the structural theory of semiotics to examine the connotative meaning of the imagery and diction and to identify signs pointing to meanings beyond the diction. The results of the study show a diversity of imagery found, including visual, auditory, motion, tactile, and atmospheric imagery. The use of imagery clearly conveys the inner atmosphere of longing and despair. This poem is also relevant to literary learning because it uses diction that trains students to understand implied meanings, imagery that supports the aesthetic analysis of language, and a theme that effectively develops students’ critical thinking skills. This poem can be a model text to improve students’ literary competence.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe community perceptions of the challenges and support in children's education in Puteng Village, Teriak District, Bengkayang Regency. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data were obtained through a closed-ended questionnaire distributed to 50 respondents who met the purposive sampling criteria. The results indicate that the majority of the community experiences serious obstacles in social, economic, and infrastructure aspects that affect children's education. Barriers such as an unsupportive social environment, peer pressure, lack of public facilities, difficult road access, and limited parental education are dominant factors that hinder children's learning process. However, strong resilience was also found in families, demonstrated by the high commitment of parents to continue accompanying and motivating children to be enthusiastic about school. Support from the community, traditional leaders, schools, and the government is still relatively low, so cross-sector synergy is needed to create a more inclusive and equitable education system in remote areas.

Abstract

Teacher–student classroom interaction functions not only to transmit knowledge but also to shape values and learning participation, making directive speech acts and politeness strategies pedagogically significant. This study investigates politeness strategies in directive speech acts within classroom interaction at a border-area elementary school. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through classroom observation, recordings, field notes, and interviews, and analyzed through speech act theory, Leech’s politeness principle, and a sociopragmatic framework. The findings show that teachers predominantly employ commands and requests, typically mitigated through addressing students by name, explanations, choice-giving, and supportive nonverbal cues, while students’ directives tend to be more direct due to peer familiarity. Politeness strategies are shaped by sociocultural diversity and relational dynamics. These results indicate that directive politeness functions as a pedagogical resource for fostering respectful interaction, student engagement, and culturally responsive communication in border-area classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the subjective process and experience of third-grade students at SDN 07 Dungkan in learning to read aloud through the application of the global method, as well as to identify supporting and inhibiting factors. The choice of the global method is based on efforts to build contextual and meaningful reading comprehension for elementary school students. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was carried out through moderate participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with 10 research subjects, questionnaires with 17 students, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted systematically through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions based on the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that learning with the global method can increase student motivation and self-confidence because it starts from complete language units (sentences) that are relevant to everyday life. The main supporting factors are the role of the teacher as a facilitator and the effective use of word cards. Meanwhile, internal obstacles include visual difficulties in distinguishing similar letters, and external obstacles include low literacy assistance at home due to the dominant use of mobile devices. This study concludes that the global method is effective in overcoming students' psychological barriers to reading while facilitating the formation of meaning through a gradual and meaningful approach.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low reading interest of fifth-grade students at SDN 08 Timonong and the suboptimal use of digital literacy to support reading activities. This study aims to describe students’ perspectives on digital literacy, teachers’ strategies for increasing reading interest, and inhibiting factors in the implementation of digital literacy at SDN 08 Timonong. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The subjects included fifth-grade students, their homeroom teachers, and the principal. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that digital literacy plays a positive role in increasing students’ reading interest. Students showed greater interest in reading activities through digital devices because the displays are more attractive, interactive, and supported by visual and audio elements. Teachers utilized digital media such as Interactive Flat Panels (IFP), learning videos, and educational games to create more engaging learning and increase student engagement. However, the implementation of digital literacy still faces obstacles such as limited facilities, unstable internet connections, and distractions from social media and games. It can be concluded that digital literacy plays a positive role as a tool, strategy, and support in increasing students’ interest in reading, as it can create reading activities that are more engaging, interactive, and aligned with students’ learning needs in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in optimizing students’ critical thinking skills in Indonesian language learning for class VB at SDS Amkur Bengkayang. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study consisted of the homeroom teacher and 42 students of class VB. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, documentation, and student learning outcomes as supporting data. The results showed that the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model was able to encourage students to become more active in learning activities, especially in discussion, problem-solving, and expressing opinions. Students also showed changes in critical thinking behavior, such as understanding problems, providing logical reasons, actively discussing, and drawing conclusions from learning activities. The teacher stated that the use of the PBL model made students more enthusiastic and involved in the learning process. Supporting data from student learning outcomes also showed better results in the second meeting compared to the first meeting. Thus, the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can optimize students’ critical thinking skills in Indonesian language learning.
