Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of picture story media in enhancing the reading abilities of second-grade students at SD Gajah Mada. Reading is a crucial skill for elementary students, but many face challenges in developing this skill, as evidenced by the average reading score of 63 at the school. To address this issue, picture story media was introduced as an engaging and interactive learning tool aimed at improving students' reading comprehension and motivation. Classroom action research (CAR) was employed, involving a reflective cycle of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In Cycle 1, the average reading score of students increased from 50.3% to 63.7% after implementing picture story media, with 65.8% of students meeting the passing criteria. Cycle 2 showed further improvement, with the percentage of students scoring between 75-100 rising from 43% to 93.2% by the end of the cycle. These results highlight the significant impact of picture story media in boosting students' reading skills and engagement. The findings support the use of visual aids in education, demonstrating that picture story media can effectively enhance reading abilities among young learners. The study contributes to the field of language education and provides practical insights for teachers in selecting effective learning media. Future research is suggested to explore the long-term effects of picture story media and its application in various educational contexts.

Abstract

Washing hands with soap is cleaning hands using soap and water properly to avoid the spread of disease. Pre-school children are susceptible to health diseases, one of which is due to lack of hand washing. Audio visual media is one of the media that can be used for learning to wash hands. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of providing education with audiovisual media on correct hand washing behavior in pre-school age children. The research design is a one group pre test post test design. The population of this study was all students in Galilea Hosanna Kids Medan Kindergarten as many as 35 students with a total sampling technique. The independent variable is the audio visual media of hand washing and the dependent variable is the good and right hand washing behavior. Collecting data using a check list sheet according to the SOP for hand washing and observation. Data collection techniques using editing, coding, scoring, tabulating, and statistical tests using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results of the study from 35 respondents, before being shown the audio- visual media, most of the respondents were less capable of 25children (71.4%), after being shown the audio-visual media, most of the respondents had good abilities, a total of 22 children (62.9%) . Wilcoxon statistical test shows p value =0.000 < a (0.05) so that H0 is rejected or H1 is accepted. It is recommended that the provision of health education to preschool-age children use audiovisual media as an effort to increase children's compliance.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the use of Language in developing the tourism industry. This research is qualitative descriptive by using primary data directly obtained from data sources, namely the use of Indonesian in the tourism industry in Bali Jimaran, which was taken documentarily by the researcher. The data collection techniques used are documentation and observation. This research results in the use of Indonesians in the tourism industry. As mentioned, Indonesia is dynamic, so the Language is alive, changing, and developing. The reason for using foreign languages is that Indonesians and many foreign tourists use buses. Although using foreign languages makes it easier to communicate with foreign tourists, the correct and standard use of English is a priority. The most commonly used words are beach, tourist, and opening. Three things will happen if foreign languages, especially English, play a more critical role in tourism than Indonesian. (1) the occurrence of a change in one's way of thinking and one's social control. With this, unconsciously, the use of foreign language terms in the world of tourism has changed the mindset of its use, (2) the emergence of different speech styles and the content of the conversation. This is said to be not uncommon in people who speak two different languages; (3) their interest in appreciating and learning Indonesian is decreasing.

Abstract

Although several types of research on speech acts have been widely conducted in many communication activities in Indonesia, studies on speech acts in religious communication inside the church, particularly those involving instructors and Sunday school pupils, are still uncovered. The study deals with the analysis of Speech Acts of The Sunday School Children of St. Fransiskus Assisi Church Medan. The purpose of this study is to describe the presentation of Illocutionary acts and their types which are dominantly used by the Sunday School Teachers. Utilizing Searle’s theory, the research was conducted by using a Qualitative Descriptive Research Method by using a case study research design. The participants of the study were 3 Sunday school teachers and 75 Sunday school children drawn by using purposive sampling technique with a total data of 200 utterances collected using recording and observations, which were analyzed in the study using qualitative data analysis technique to find out the pattern of speech acts. The study shows that there are five types of illocutionary acts used by Sunday school teachers: directives, assertive, expressive, commissions, and declarative. The most dominant type of speech acts in communication presentations were directives reaching up to 68,91%, whereas the least to occur was the declarative type (0.51%). The results of this study restate that the communication aspects that should be practiced in Sunday schools’ children should emphasize persuasive expressions to persuade Sunday school children to be more active in worshiping and listening to God's word as well as to grow their faith.
