Abstract

The objective of this study was to know whether there is any effect between the time constraints of students when doing exams using (extended time) with students who take exams using (non-extended time). The sample used in this study amounted to 60 grade 11 students in SMA 03 Kaur. The method used in this research was the quantitative method and uses ex post facto design. In collecting data the author gives multiple-choice exam questions consisting of 50 questions, these are questions in the form of narrative texts. In analyzing the data, the authors used the Mann Whitney U-Test in SPSS 16.0. The results of this study indicate that the influence of time constraints on student examinations using extended time.

Abstract

This research is to investigate how EFL college students response in enjoying short stories by using Wattpad and to find out how their perception and experiences in enjoying short stories by means reading Wattpad. As interest in literacy activities, EFL college students’ choose Wattpad as an application to read short stories, Wattpad is a fairly popular and efficient application for reading short stories and can provide comments directly within the short story paragraphs and Wattpad has many advantages in promoting reader-response theory to EFL college students’ .This case study was conducted to the college students and 40 students. Three instruments covering the observation, the interview, and the questionnaire were chosen to gain the data. It was concluded that there is the positive feedback of using Wattpad as a media to learning literature similar to those previous studies, this research also focuses on Wattpad as a media to learning literature.

Abstract

This article reports the students’ perceptions in implementing Quipper School as an e- learning platform in teaching English and to know the advantages and disadvantages of it. This study took two sample classes with the overall fifty-three students by using cluster sampling technique and focusing on the survey study method. Twenty questionnaires provided to identify the students’ perceptions about quipper school. A depth information appear to be as important to gain more information and continuous responses to explore the advantages and disadvantages of implementing quipper school that have been undertaken by interviewing the students. The findings revealed that the students are comfortable learning with technology and also prefer to use IT. More significantly, The advantages of quipper school keep interaction between teacher and student in and out of the classroom, students still get lesson or review the material even though the teacher is not present in the classroom, and enhances students’ learning experiences using new learning system. Besides, quipper school also has disadvantages when it is applied in learning process, such as unstable internet connections, limited facilities (computer) that support learning by using quipper school, and there was no speaking material which it could be implemented in quipper school. It can be noted today learning and teaching can benefit from using quipper school in teaching English, students still get a lesson even though the teacher is not present to provide direct instruction and students can improve their achievement in learning English by reviewing the material wherever and whenever they are.

Abstract

This study is aimed at elaborating the non-equivalences in the word level, above level, grammatical level, textual level, pragmatics level in translation process. This study employed the two research questions i.e. what are the types non equivalences emerge in the translation process? and what are the problems and strategy used by the translator that emerge in translation process?. Covering these questions, this study used descriptive qualitative approach by using the library research to gain some references of types of non-equivalences, problems, and strategy used in the object of the study. The result revealed various types of non-equivalences and problems emerge from the translation process and some strategies also used by the translator to cover the problematic issues on the non-equivalence in translation process.

Abstract

This paper showed the compliment responses in English made by 7th grade students at SMP Negeri 8 Sekayu. The sample of this study was five females and five males of the 7th grade students. From the seven categories of compliment responses, there were only six compliment responses in English made by students: acceptance, positive elaboration, neutral elaboration, denial, smiling, and no response. The result of this study showed that: 1) female had highest percentage in positive elaboration and smiling; 2) male had highest percentage in denial and no response; and 3) female and male had same percentage in acceptance and neutral elaboration response. There was no negative elaboration response used by students (female and male). Hence, it can be said that students gender hold important effect in giving compliment responses in English.

Abstract

Stance Expression indicates feelings, certainty or uncertainty, and interests of the authors. As the increasing needs of the readers on significant findings from the introduction section of Research Articles, a study on Stance Expression of introduction section in the English research articles written by Cambodian authors has been conducted to employ crucial aims of the study: (1) examine stance expression types and the categories of each type; (2) compare the similarities and differences of stance expression types used in the introduction section of English RAs written by Cambodian authors published in local and international journals. Thirty research articles written by Cambodian authors published in local and international journals were used in this study. To fulfill these research objectives, the mixed-method research design was utilized in this study. All the four stance features, such as Hedges, Boosters, Attitude Markers, and Self-expression, proposed by Hyland (2005) were used as a Lexical analysis framework model in this study. The results revealed that four stance expression types were found in this study. The hedge was the most frequently employed among the other types of stances. There is a significantly different in terms of the frequencies of hedge used within both RA journals, but there is no for booster, attitude marker, and self-mention. Local Cambodian authors should follow the international authors as models in applying stance in their RAs.  A  comparison study of the stance expression and engagement between Cambodian and international authors in the introduction should be expanded more different articles from available journals.Keywords: English research article, introduction section, stance expression, local journals, international journals

Abstract

Introduced to relatively new curriculum, KTSP, teachers are given the challenge to develop the curriculum, the syllabus, the lesson plan and the activities in the classroom, yet the teachers seem still have the difficulties in developing the curriculum, integrating the learning objectives in the syllabus into activities lay in lesson plan thus this study is conducted in purpose to find out how teachers interpret the learning objectives in syllabus into the lesson plan, discover the difficulties and how the teachers overcome the difficulties. Qualitative-Descriptive design was used in conducting the study. Therefore, two second-grade English teachers in one of private high school in Bandung are selected to be the subject of this study. The data was gained and analyzed from document analysis and interview. The study found that teachers using the existed syllabus and lesson plan, which can be provided by school or available on the internet. They do not modify or revise the syllabus; they use it as guidance for their teaching. They modify the lesson plan by seeing the condition of the class and students’ character without stating it into formal form of lesson plan. Yet the teachers are able to interpret and implement the objectives in the syllabus into learning activities well and create the appropriate situation in the classroom. The difficulties faced by the teachers are mainly because they are inexperienced teachers, with relatively short period of time they are still in the process of recognizing and understanding the surroundings, relate to the aspects within the school, students and curriculum itself. Sharing and learning from the experienced-teachers may be the best solution of the problem. The coordination and collaboration among teachers in school and between teachers and school may give benefit also in reaching the expected learning objectives and developing the KTSP curriculum. Keywords: curriculum, KTSP, lesson plan, qualitative-descriptive, syllabus.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh para guru di Kabupaten Rejang Lebong yang dianggap banyak yang kurang tersentuh dengan teknologi yang digunakan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu perlu diberikan bekal pengetahuan tentang teknologi pembelajaran melalui pelatihan. Adapun tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah untuk melatih dan mewujudkan habituasi pada guru Bahasa Inggris di Kabupaten Rejang Lebong agar mampu mengaplikasikan aplikasi AGORA IO Video Call dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Dalam melaksanakan kegiatan ini, metode pengabdian dilakukan dalam bentuk sosialisasi dan pelatihan serta evaluasi. Kegiatan pengadian ini terkait dengan Dinas pendidikan di Provinsi Bengkulu dan instansi pendidikan di Kabupaten Rejang Lebong khususnya Sekolah Menengah Pertama dan atas di Rejang Lebong. Dinas pendidikan dan instansi terkait merupakan lembaga yang memiliki visi yang sama dengan tim pelaksana kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini yakni mencerdaskan kehidupan Bangsa Indonesia. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa para guru bahasa Inggris memberikan respon yang positif terhadap kegiatan pelatihan ini. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan banyaknya guru yang memberikan pilihan sangat baik dan baik pada angket yang telah didistribusikan. Selain itu, para guru juga merasa pelatihan ini sangat bermanfaat bagi mereka dalam mengajarkan bahasa Inggris kepada siswa karena Agora IO Video Call dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu alternative media yang mudah dan praktis dalam penggunaannya dalam mengajar dan belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This study investigated the types of code mixing used in one of teenage magazines in Indonesia, namely Aneka Yess! magazine. The research question was “what types of code mixing used in Aneka Yess! magazine”. The objective of this study was to find out the types of code mixing used in Aneka Yess! magazine, especially in “Palls Issue” rubric. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The techniques of data collection were: 1) collected the magazine during a month which consisted of two editions, namely 14 – 27 March  dition, and 28 March – 10 April  edition, 2) decided the rubric as an object of the study, 3) read the rubric, 4) underlined English code mixings, 5) identified the forms of code mixing. The result of this study showed that there were five forms of code mixings that used in the magazine, namely code mixing of word insertion that consist of 64 data, phrase insertion consist of 29 data, clause insertion consist of 10 data, reduplication insertion consist of 1 data, and idiom insertion consist of 4 data. The code mixings in word insertion was most frequently used in the magazine rather than the other types of code mixings, while the most rarely used was code mixing in reduplication insertion. It can be concluded that the using of code mixing was influenced by the capability or the knowledge of the speaker or interlocutor in using English language.

Abstract

Speech act is an act of communication that must be understood by the speaker and listener. Misunderstanding of speech act in conversation or dialogue can cause the misleading in the conversation. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the speech act types in daily conversation between students and parents at home. Qualitative research design was undertaken by the researcher to gain the speech act types. The research participants were twenty-four students of English Education department. Checklist was used to obtain the data. Moreover, the data were analyzed by using qualitative analysis by applying several stages from reduction, displaying and drawing conclusion. The result showed that several types of speech were found during conversation of students and parents at home. Those were directive, declarative, expressive and commissive. The dominant speech act type was directive because the parents asked the students to do something at home. Another finding showed that the students and parents did not use representative speech act in the conversation. It is because in the conversation between students and parents at home were informal conversation that seldom or never use representative. In short, it is not all speech appeared in the conversation because it depends on the function of speech act itself.
