Abstract

This research reviews prophet Muhammad SAW utterances when talking to people who had different paradigms from him. The data used in this research are the conversations of prophet Muhammad to non-moslim in book hadith of Bukhari. This research is qualitative study and to analyze the data is used heuristics method. The result shows that from 34 Rasulullah Muhammad’s speeches against non muslim people are found 3 types of speech acts, those are 16 directive speech acts, 17 assertive and 1 rogative. Moreover the most dominant politeness that arises is negative politeness. It happened because negative politeness is used to protect negative face that was used for a social relationship between speaker and hearer. Furthermore, Off the Record strategy is to be the most dominant in asertive type because a speaker (Prophet Muhammad) used a communication strategy by not stating directive speech directly to the non muslim as the hearer.

Abstract

Reduction in subtitling is inevitable due to technical rules of time and space as well as synchronization, i.e. displaying subtitle when the utterance/dialogue is spoken. Consequently, reduction leads to the loss of meaning incorporated into the subtitle. Reduction takes place within linguistic unit, such as word, group of words, even clause/sentence. Under the scrutiny of experiential dimension within ideational metafunction of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this qualitative study article discusses the results of a study on how far reduction of English Nominal Group (NG) elements as experiential structure has contributed to alteration of entity expression in the Indonesian subtitle of The Kingdom (2007), of which the objective data were collected by way of purposive sampling. The results show that reduction of English NG experiential structure set new expression of entity and even reduction of the NG main element, Thing, resulted in the loss of entity in the subtitle.

The violations of the quality maxim, relevance maxim, and manner maxim are also done in less number compare to quantity maxim violations. The nonobservance of the maxims mostly is violating a maxim, flouting a maxim, infringing a maxim, suspending a maxim, and the last is opting out of a maxim

Abstract

This research examines the two factors which effect on the raising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. It aimed at delineating the potential effect of these two factors on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference of undergraduate students majoring in English department of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung and PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. 213 Javanese undergraduate students were selected based on two-step purposive sampling. To collect data, the researcher used observation and questionares in which the participants answered a set of 12 open-ended questions to measure the students’ term along with educational institution and Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. To analyze the data, t-test on correlation and coefficient as well as linier stepwise multiple regressions were conducted through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Data analysis indicated that the independent variables significantly correlated with Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. In addition, multiple regressions analysis specified different higher institution as the main contributing variable and students’ term as the second one on the arising of Indonesian interference. It also showed that students of English departments of state Islamic institution of Tulungagung got higher scores on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference than those of PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. The reason may refer to the supporting environment that is higher language exposure. The results highlighted the longer the students’ term they have, the lower score on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference they produce.
