Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning style tendencies exhibited by students in their pursuit of listening and speaking skills for general communication at UKI Toraja, as well as to examine the correlation between these learning style tendencies and their achievement in speaking and listening skills. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach, with a sample size of 35 students, analyzed using SPSS 26. The results of the questionnaire indicated a very strong correlation, ranging from 0.80 to 1.000. It revealed that students possessed three distinct learning styles when acquiring listening and speaking skills for general communication: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Each of these learning styles exhibited a highly significant correlation with students' achievements. Specifically, the correlation between the visual learning style and student achievement was 0.932, signifying a very strong relationship. The audio learning style exhibited a correlation of 0.885 with student learning achievement, also indicating a very strong connection. Lastly, the kinesthetic learning style displayed a correlation of 0.930 with student achievement, further underscoring a very strong relationship. These findings demonstrate that each learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) is significantly correlated with student achievement. Therefore, it can be concluded that H1 is accepted, as each learning style exhibits a strong correlation with students' achievement in listening and speaking skills

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Toraja cultural elements in the sentence writing of English Education students at UKI Toraja. Using a quantitative descriptive analysis with 56 participants, the research utilized a questionnaire to evaluate engagement with local cultural aspects. The results show a significant incorporation of traditional food and natural landscapes, which received mean scores of 59 and 63, respectively, indicating students' appreciation for their heritage and enhancing their identity through sensory experiences. However, cultural expressions such as Londe/Pantun and the Rambu Tuka’ ceremony were less represented, with mean scores of 41 and 52, revealing gaps in students' familiarity and confidence. These findings highlight the need for educational initiatives that encourage the exploration of underrepresented cultural elements, thereby enriching student narratives and providing a more comprehensive portrayal of Toraja culture. Expanding curricular approaches to include diverse expressions of local heritage can improve writing skills and strengthen cultural connections among students.

Abstract

Machine translation has become increasingly popular, but its accuracy is still a subject of debate. This study aims to compare the accuracy of two popular machine translation tools, Google Translate and DeepL Translate, in translating English to Indonesian. This research applied a descriptive quantitative research methodology. The research design involves comparing the accuracy of Google Translate and DeepL Translate by analyzing the output translation texts and  using narrative texts as the sample. The data collection procedure involves conducting a written test using data cards and a data sheet. The accuracy of the translations is calculated based on the percentage of accurately translated meanings. The findings of this research indicate that both Google Translate and DeepL Translate provide translations that are considered less accurate. This statement is based on the finding of accuracy occurrence  DeepL Translate outperforms Google Translate with a higher percentage. Specifically, DeepL Translate achieves an accuracy rate of 73.1%, while Google Translate lags slightly behind at 63.4%. This suggests that DeepL Translate demonstrates a better ability to produce accurate translations across the board. In conclusion, this research highlights the need for improvement in machine translation tools for translating English to Indonesian. Both Google Translate and DeepL Translate show limitations in accuracy, indicating the importance of continuing research and development in the field of machine translation.
