Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in addressing the practical challenges faced by teachers in implementing Project-Based Learning (PBL) within English instruction at SMKN 1 Toraja Utara, particularly under the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum. PBL is widely recognized for fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and authentic language use; however, its successful application requires adequate teacher preparation, resources, and supportive learning environments. This study adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis to explore these challenges in depth. The findings indicate that teachers face substantial barriers, including insufficient formal training and limited understanding of PBL concepts, which hinder the design and facilitation of effective projects. Resource shortages, such as inadequate materials and budget constraints, further complicate implementation. Additionally, resistance from students and parents reduces motivation and acceptance of the approach. Time constraints emerge as a particularly critical obstacle, limiting opportunities for thorough planning, execution, and assessment of projects, despite the presence of some supportive facilities. Other notable issues involve difficulties in evaluating students’ problem-solving skills and managing diverse classroom dynamics to ensure equitable participation. These findings highlight the need for targeted professional development, improved resource allocation, and adaptive teaching strategies to align PBL with the vocational school context. While PBL presents significant educational benefits, addressing these constraints is essential for its effectiveness. The study recommends stronger institutional support and the integration of PBL-focused training into teacher development programs to enhance its sustainability and impact in vocational English education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning style tendencies exhibited by students in their pursuit of listening and speaking skills for general communication at UKI Toraja, as well as to examine the correlation between these learning style tendencies and their achievement in speaking and listening skills. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach, with a sample size of 35 students, analyzed using SPSS 26. The results of the questionnaire indicated a very strong correlation, ranging from 0.80 to 1.000. It revealed that students possessed three distinct learning styles when acquiring listening and speaking skills for general communication: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Each of these learning styles exhibited a highly significant correlation with students' achievements. Specifically, the correlation between the visual learning style and student achievement was 0.932, signifying a very strong relationship. The audio learning style exhibited a correlation of 0.885 with student learning achievement, also indicating a very strong connection. Lastly, the kinesthetic learning style displayed a correlation of 0.930 with student achievement, further underscoring a very strong relationship. These findings demonstrate that each learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) is significantly correlated with student achievement. Therefore, it can be concluded that H1 is accepted, as each learning style exhibits a strong correlation with students' achievement in listening and speaking skills

Abstract

Abstrak. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini ialah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Ingris anak-anak dengan mengunakan metode pengunaan Real English yang diadopsi dari metode kontekstual learning yang mendekatkan Bahasa Inggris ke lingkungan pribadi anak-anak.. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepasa Masyarakat ini bermitra dengan Mitra dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini ialah anak-anak di 4 dusun di Lembang Rantedada, Mengkendek, Tana Toraja, Sulawesi Selatan. Tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian ini terdiri atas 3 tahap yakni persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mengalami peningkatan, kepercayaan diri anak untuk meningkat dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris dari yang dahulu merasa malu sekarang mereka bisa berdiri di depan teman-teman mereka untuk memperkenalkan diri dan bercerita tentang pengalaman mereka.   Kata Kunci:  anak, real english, kontekstual, rantedada

Abstract

The fabula (story) present in the science fiction novel "Penjelajah Antariksa 5: Kapten Raz" by Djokolelono is analyzed by examining the narrative elements that construct the overall story. This study aims to analyze the fabula in the science fiction novel "Penjelajah Antariksa 5: Kapten Raz" by Djokolelono using Mieke Bal's narratological approach. The study seeks to analyze the elements of fabula by examining the events, actors, time, and setting. Mieke Bal's narratology theory is utilized as the theoretical framework. The research method employed is text analysis, with data collection techniques involving close reading and note-taking. Data is collected from the descriptions of events, characters, time, and place within the story. The data is then analyzed using narrative analysis based on Mieke Bal's theory. The findings reveal that the science fiction novel "Penjelajah Antariksa 5: Kapten Raz" by Djokolelono has a complex fabula, with the use of rich narrative techniques such as analepsis (flashback) and prolepsis (foreshadowing). The characters in the novel play a pivotal role in driving the narrative and creating dynamic conflicts and resolutions. The elements of characters (actors), time, and location provide a strong foundation for constructing the fabula by providing the agents of action, the temporal framework for the sequence of events, and the physical context for the actions.  This study contributes to the field of narratology, particularly in the application of Mieke Bal's theory to science fiction literature. The findings can serve as a reference for future researchers who wish to explore narrative analysis. AbstrakFabula yang terdapat dalam novel fiksi-ilmiah Penjelajah Antariksa 5: Kapten Raz karya Djokolelono, dengan mencari elemen-elemen fabula yang membentuk keseluruhan narasi dalam novel. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis fabula dalam novel fiksi-ilmiah Penjelajah Antariksa 5: Kapten Raz karya Djokolelono dengan menggunakan kajian naratologi Mieke Bal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis elemen-elemen fabula dengan memperhatikan peristiwa, aktor, lata latar waktu dan tempat. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori naratologi Mieke Bal. Metode yang digunakan menggunakan analisis teks. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik baca dan teknik catat. Data dikumpulkan dari deskripsi persitiwa, karakter, latar waktu dan tempat yang terdapat dalam cerita. Data dianalisis menggunakan analisis naratif berdasarkan teori Mieke Bal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa novel fiksi-ilmiah Penjelajah Antariksa 5: Kapten Raz karya Djokolelono memiiki fabula yang kompleks dengan penggunaan teknik naratif yang kaya akan analepsis (flaschback) dan prolepsis (foreshadowing), karakter-karakter dalam novel memainkan peran penting dalam menggerakkan narasi dan menciptakan konflik dan resolusi yang dinamis. Elemen tokoh (aktor), waktu, dan lokasi memberikan dasar yang kuat untuk membangun fabula dengan menyediakan tokoh yang melakukan tindakan, kerangka waktu untuk urutan peristiwa, dan konteks fisik untuk aksi. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi bagi studi naratologi, khususnya dalam penerapan teori Mieke Bal pada karya sastra fiksi-ilmiah. Temuan ini dapat dijadikan sebagai referensi bagi peneliti selanjutnya yang ingin mengeksplorasi analisis naratif.
