Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the 15-item smartphone addiction proneness scale (SAPS) among a sample of Malaysian adolescents. The gathered data were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. There were 922 secondary school students involved in this study. The exploratory factor analysis extracted a three-factor solution for SAPS. These factors were named disturbance of adaptive functions, withdrawal and tolerance. Results from confirmatory factor analysis also indicated that the three-factor structure fits well with the data. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be good. The positive and moderately strong correlation between SAPS and three widely adopted criterion variables (depression, loneliness and boredom proneness) supported the concurrent validity of SAPS. The results of this study showed that the SAPS is a reliable and valid instrument for identifying problematic smartphone use among Malaysian adolescents.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid instrument to measure primary school students’ sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge. The instrument measures primary school students’ knowledge in four domains: i) puberty; ii) human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and sexually transmitted diseases; iii) prevention of child sexual abuse; and iv) reproduction and reproductive systems. All items in the instrument were reviewed and screened by experts before they were administered to 125 primary five students. The instrument’s dimensionality, fit statistics, hierarchical ordering of item difficulty, and item and person separation reliability were assessed using the rasch measurement model (RMM). The results showed that the instrument demonstrated unidimensionality, and the items exhibited a wide range of difficulty level. Misfitting items were removed from the questionnaire, and the remaining 36 items were retained. The RMM outputs showed good item’s reliability (.97) with high separation index (5.52). However, the person reliability (.79) and the person separation index (1.94) were slightly the recommended value. Overall, the results show that the developed instrument can be used with confidence to assess sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge among primary school students in Malaysia.

Abstract

Language learning is the biggest challenge for students with dyslexia. Therefore, special education teachers play a pivotal role in assisting students with dyslexia to mitigate any difficulties in their language learning process. This study explored the perception of special education teachers in terms of their experience, challenges faced, and strategies adopted to assist students with dyslexia in the learning process. A semi-structured interview session was conducted with three participants from three primary schools under the Special Education Integration Program (SEIP) Dyslexia Program. The findings indicated that it was challenging for special education teachers to teach students with dyslexia because they lacked the effective teaching methods and resources. Based on their teaching experiences, students with dyslexia encountered difficulties in phoneme-grapheme associations, sound blending, and segmentation. Additionally, the participants perceive that the adoption of a multisensory approach and the utilisation of mobile learning applications are two effective strategies to improve the teaching of language to students with dyslexia. Lastly, this study provided vital findings to be used as research materials by other like-minded researchers in the future.

Abstract

Background: The national coverage of exclusive breastmilk did not reach its target in 2014. One reason behind this was due to the swelling of the breast to mastitis condition. Hence the baby was not getting enough breastmilk. World Health Organization WHO estimates the mastitis case between 2.6 and 33 %, with global prevalence around 10% of all breastfeeding women. In 2014, Panembahan Senopati Bantul Yogyakarta Hospital documented 5.3% women with mastitis and 4.2% in 2015. Objective: This research aims to evaluate the correlation of ages, education, employment status, parity, and mastitis history with mastitis case in Panembahan Senopati Bantul Yogyakarta Hospital. Methods: This research was an observational analytic with a case-control design. Data analytic was performed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results of bivariate analysis showed that age (OR = 0.673; 95% CI; 0.345-1.314), education (OR = 1.288; 95% CI; 0.678-2.44), employment status (OR = 1.368; 95% CI; 0.749 -2.497), and parity (OR = 0.829; CI 95%; 0.455-1.511) did not have a significant correlation with the incidence of mastitis, but the history of mastitis showed a significant association with the incidence of mastitis (OR = 2.280; 95% CI; 1.112-1.674 ). Conclusion: There was a correlation between the history of mastitis with the recurrence of mastitis in Panembahan Senopati Bantul Yogyakarta Hospital.

Abstract

Piyungan landfill is a waste final processing site that is still active now. Waste in the Piyungan landfill produces hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) gases. The gas comes from the anaerobic decomposition of waste by microorganisms. The purpose of this study is to analyze the health risks of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia exposure in the community at Piyungan landfill. This study was descriptive research and used quantitative analysis. The research design was cross-sectional with the environmental health risk analysis approach. The research sample is the people of Ngablak hamlet, which live in a zone of ± 600 meters from the Piyungan landfill. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, and the sample size was 59 people. The results showed that the risk level (RQ) of hydrogen sulfide was 1.2163 (RQ > 1), while the ammonia level was 0.0203 (RQ ≤ 1). Based on these results, the level of risk due to exposure to hydrogen sulfide is said to be unsafe. However, exposure to ammonia is said to be safe or not at risk of causing health problems in the community. The research is expected to be useful for improving the waste management system at TPA Piyungan and public awareness of processing waste.
