Abstract

Refusal often ends in misunderstanding and even anger, so people organize and maintain their refusal to avoid face threats. The people of Surabaya use the native Surabaya language, which is known as an open and blunt language, so a rejection strategy is assumed similar to this characteristic. This thesis aims to analyze what types of refusal strategies of native Surabaya young people use and how they use them in English. It examines how respondents refused invitation, request, offer or suggestion in various situations. This is a qualitative study with 21 native Surabaya young people, the EFL learners completing a Written Discourse Completion Test or WDCT, which contains several scenarios based on power and social distance. Data were analyzed using SPSS and the results showed that although the respondents came from Surabaya, which is known for its outspoken speaking style, in fact only 12.6% respondents used the direct refusal strategy, conversely most respondents used indirect refusal strategy (79.7%)  in expressing their rejection, while the least used strategy was Adjunct (7.7%). The respondents continued to use the indirect refusal strategies, even though they had more power and less closeness or have the equal power and closeness to the interlocutors.

Abstract

This research attempts to identify the effectiveness of grouping based on listening strategies in big class. The data were collected from fourth semester students in the form of opinions. The data were analyzed by questionnaire in order to find out the effectiveness of making group based on listening strategies. The questionnaire has three sections, the first section asks about students opinion about listening class and making group in listening class, the second part about the effectiveness of making group in class and the last is about students opinion how to build effectiveness in listening class. The results presented in first section of questionnaire that the students like listening class and making group but the number is only slightly bigger than dislike. The second parts, the students respond that they satisfy enough in making group in listening class. The last section, the questionnaire investigates students opinion about how to build the effectiveness in listening class. The highest answer is building knowledge and work collaboratively. Based on the students answer it is reflected that they tend to prefer work in group for achieving the effectiveness in teaching big class.

Abstract

Keterampilan kolaborasi calon guru Bahasa Indonesia perlu dikembangkan agar dapat menghadapi tantangan di abad ke-21. Melalui kegiatan Lesson Study, dosen melakukan perencanaan, pelaksanaan pembelajaran, dan refleksi terhadap kegiatan pembelajaran dengan menggunakan metode project based learning dengan tujuan akhir mahasiswa mampu mengembangkan media pembelajaran. Indikator yang digunakan untuk mengenatahui keterampilan kolaborasi calon guru adalah (1) berkontribusi aktif, (2) menunjukkan fleksibilitas dan kompromi untuk mencapai tujuan, (3) menunjukkan sikap menghargai, dan (4) menunjukkan sikap tanggung jawab. Data diperoleh dari catatan hasil observasi dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dari hasil analisis, diketahui bahwa calon guru Bahasa Indonesia memiliki keteramilan kolaborasi yang tinggi. Diantara 7 kelompok hanya terdapat 1 kelompok yang kurang dalam berkolaborasi. Sehingga penelitian selanjutnya diperlukan metode kuantitiif untuk menujukan prosentase keefektifan kolaborasi. Selain itu, implikasi dari penelitian ini dapat diajadikan panduan penerapan kolaborasi dalam proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

Learning language is automatically learning the culture. However, there is limited book in learning Indonesia language which is discussed about culture. This article purpose is to find out what was the attitude of students towards the textbooks adopted. Hence, it is examined by using qualitative since this study analyzed the phenomena which occurred in Indonesian Language Learning for Foreigner class (BIPA). The Subject of the study is BIPA students which consists of 6 foreigner students. The data is taken from the questionnaire and analyzed based on the student’s opinion. The result presents the students opinion towards the textbooks is excellent.

Abstract

Teachers and students’ interactions play a crucial role in achieving learning outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to find out how discourse strategies are used in a primary inclusive school. Through the participation of a primary inclusive school’s teacher, a corpus of recorded data was constructed. The discourse strategies were then identified and categorized based on the theory of Dornyei and Scott. The result of the study revealed that, based on corpus-analysis, the teacher used only the More Communicative Potential strategy. Within this category, the most frequently used strategy was a comprehension check. This was primarily applied because the teacher’s main purpose was to deliver the lesson clearly and coherently while ensuring students understood the material. This study implied that it is essential for teachers to be aware of and apply appropriate discourse strategies to support effective classroom interaction.

Abstract

Politic is always related to activities that influence the action and policies in government or society. This activity will gain or keep power on it. This research aimed to analyze Donald Trump’s utterances in his presidential campaign at November 16th, 2015 in Knoxville Convention Center. There are four objective of the research that must be answered; 1) The utterances that illustrated political discourse in Donald Trump Speech; 2) The way he delivered his political discourse; 3) The aim of the utterances; 4) Effect of the utterance to people. Descriptive qualitative was applied as the method of the research and the data of the research were the utterances that illustrated Donald Trump’s political discourse. The utterances were being analyzed using CDA’s Van Dijk supported by Fairclough and Wodak theory. The result showed his way to deliver his ideology in gaining power where in power; there is an ability to control people which in line with his purpose to win American’s heart. Trump’s political strategies succeeded to gain many supports that made him elected as the presidential candidate from the Republic party.

Abstract

Task-Based Learning has proven as a good approach in teaching English. The approach has been implemented in teaching language, especially English integrated skills. This is enough for researcher to do the study about implementation of TBL to training students mastery for language’s macro skills. The material which taken as the topic was natural disaster. Therefore, it was easy to learn for the students as they had experienced the event through their environment. The objective of this research is to find out if TBL effectives in teaching the students about integrated skills and to know how Task-Based Learning improves students’ language abilities. This research uses Classroom Action Research with two cycles. There are several phases in this research design, namely: (a) planning, (b) action, (c) observing and, (d) reflection. The subject is class of XI NKN 2 at vocational high school in Surabaya. Based on this study, it was proven that Task-Based Learning could improve the eleventh grader students’ score which in the good level with 80% students passed the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) after the conduction of cycle 2. This study resulted in Task-Based Learning was able to help students enggage in learning four language skills in the same time while being active during the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the online gamers' language features and their implication in vocational high school English material. A qualitative study is conducted and three aspects of language register theory including field, tenor, and lexical resources are explored. The scope, context, and situation of the online gaming interaction (Valorant and Player's Unknown Battleground) are also analyzed. The interaction among gamers happened in different types of fields and tenor depends on their roles and context in online games. The lexical resources data found that gamers dominantly used noun words beside other language features. This study recommends teachers leverage the related online games' vocabularies into their English teaching materials to encourage students learning. Further study needs to explore the influence of online gaming on students' English achievement.

Abstract

Background. The low literacy skills among Indonesia students is the main problem. Purpose. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the digital materials that foster critical thinking while addressing social issues, such as social inclusion and gender equality and the research questions focus on the module’s feasibility, the integration of critical literacy and GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) strategies, and the module’s suitability from user perspectives. Method. Thus, it used ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) which guided the development process over eight months, involving five experts, three model teachers, and six classes with 180 junior high school students. Results. The research findings indicate that expert validation, teacher evaluation, and student readability assessments confirmed the Si-Moli module as a valid and feasible tool for promoting critical literacy and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) in English language learning. Quantitative evaluation results showed that the module received a high level of acceptance from experts, teachers, and students, with an overall mean score of 4.62 out of 5 (92.4%), indicating that it was perceived as highly relevant, practical, and effective. Conclusion. The module received positive feedback from experts, teachers, and students, who highlighted its potential to engage learners with important social issues while enhancing their language skills. However, improvements in website functionality, accessibility, language simplicity, and visual design were recommended to further enhance its usability and effectiveness.
