Abstract

Abstract

Food and food preparation are the elements that usually reveals in works of literature. Its recurrent motif raises the assumption that they must contain some meanings in social and cultural realm. This paper analyses the symbolic meanings of cooking, as part of food preparation, in the British children work of literature, The Famous Five, written by Enid Blyton. The analysis uses theory of semiology proposed by Roland Barthes on denotative and connotative meanings and it is conducted through close-reading. The analysis results in how cooking becomes: first, a routine obligation, where the women cook mostly spend their time doing their work in the kitchen and work orderly to please; second, cooking as a marker of maturity for coming-of-age girls, in which teenage becomes the time marker that a girl must be able to cook; third, cooking as a marker of gender-based job division, where women should involve in domestic works, while men dedicate in public sphere. The children’s literature becomes one of the effective tools to embed the values and beliefs in children’s mind as childhood is the golden age to receive any information through the children’s senses.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the translation forms of first-person pronouns used as the subject and object from English into Indonesian. This research is descriptive-comparative with a qualitative approach, which explores the nature of first-person pronouns in two novels. The problem of this research is how the equivalent forms are found in translating first-person pronouns from English into Indonesian in the novel “Murder on the Orients Express”. The results show that there are 155 first-person pronouns in the English novel, indicating that the translation of these pronouns, “I” can be aku, ku- kami, and saya, “me” can be kita and sayalah, “we” can be kereta, kami, and kita, and “us” can be kita and kemari. The differences in translation results are due to the different pronoun systems. English does not have an inclusive and exclusive system for “we”, while Indonesian does not have the first-person pronouns in terms of subjects and objects.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the modulation used in translating metaphors in L.M. Montgomery’s The Golden Road using the modulation classification theory proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. While previous studies on modulation mainly focus on equivalence and meaning shift, there is limited research exploring the specific role of modulation method in translating metaphors, especially in literary works. To address this gap, this study utilizes a descriptive-comparative qualitative method, the data for this study are metaphorical expressions translated with modulation from the English novel The Golden Road and its translation into Indonesian titled Hari-Hari Bahagia by L.M. Montgomery. The result of this study reveals that out of 181 data, 6 out of 10 types of modulation applied by the translator in this novel are explicative modulation (51%), abstract for concrete (23%), change of symbols (20%), negation of the opposite (3%), active to passive (vice versa) (2%), and one part for another (1%). This study shows that metaphor translation not only focuses on word equivalence but also requires creativity and a deep understanding of both languages to maintain the essence and uniqueness of the source text.

Abstract

Abstract Translating comics presents unique challenges, particularly due to the rich cultural elements embedded in the source language. This study explores the translation strategies applied to hyperbolic expressions in the Donald Duck comic series. The current study uses a descriptive analysis method. The analysis reveals that domestication is the predominant strategy employed. By utilizing domestication, the translator adapts cultural references to align with the norms and expectations of the target audience, thereby enhancing readability and familiarity. However, this approach often leads to a reduction or loss of the original hyperbolic effect, as the translated text tends to emphasize the underlying meaning or contextual relevance over a literal preservation of rhetorical devices. While domestication facilitates pragmatic equivalence and audience engagement, it may compromise the stylistic and emotive force of the original text, highlighting the tension between cultural accessibility and rhetorical fidelity in comic translation Keywords: Hyperbole, Comic translation strategy, Domestication, Foreignization
