Abstract

Abstract.  This research aimed to explore the kinds of anxiety experienced by the students in learning speaking, and to examine the causes of the anxiety in learning speaking. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were 36 students consisting 19 females and 17 males selected to be research participants through conveniently selected sampling. The data of this research were collected by online questionnaire, and interview. The obtained data were analyzed in three major phases namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research revealed three kinds of anxiety experienced by the students in learning speaking namely trait anxiety, situational-specific anxiety, and state anxiety. Furthermore, the causes of speaking anxiety were communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and the students’ reading comprehension at the second Grade of SMPN 1Kolaka. The population of this research was all the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kolaka which consist of 206 students. The sample of this research is 26 students, it is class VIII B. The instruments in this research were two kinds of test, they were vocabulary test and reading comprehension test, each test consisted of 20 multiple choice. All the data gained in this research was analyzed by using the formulation of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. According to the result of the analysis and statistical calculate, it found that rxy was 0.705 and rt was 0.404 with the degree of freedom (df=N-nr) was 24. By comparing the values of rxy and rt, the result was rxy was bigger than rt, in other words rcount was higher than r table. It means that there was correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension and coefficient correlation was high, in this case the alternative hypothesis is accepted.Based on the finding from this research, it could be concluded that vocabulary mastery helps the students to comprehend the text. To solve the problem in comprehending the text in which students should have sufficient vocabulary that can help them in doing their in reading test.

Abstract

The objectives of this research was to find out why students' ability to write simple descriptive paragraphs is improved by modeling in the second year of MTs Negeri Kolaka. The report's aim was to gather information and data about the students' ability to write concise descriptive paragraphs by modeling.This research used a collaborative Classroom Action Research design (CAR). It happened in the first semester of the academic year 2019-2020. The emphasis of this research was on classes VIII and 8. There were 23 students in this group. The writing test and observation sheet were the instruments used in the study. In order to collect data, the researcher conducted research from the first to the second cycle. The data was analyzed using qualitative methods.According to the result of the research, modeling in the second year of MTs Negeri Kolaka could enhance the students' ability to write clear descriptive paragraphs. The paper concluded an increase in the number of students writing. The outcome of the writing test provided by the researcher at the last meeting in terms of product could be seen in terms of product. The students got an average score of 48.52 on the pre-test. It increased to 63,30 in the first period and 75,13 in the second. Every meeting's outcome observation sheet revealed that teaching and learning activities were growing. Based on the analysis of the observation sheet, the average score was found to be 3,7. It belongs to the equal group in the first cycle. It was at 4,7% at the time. It belongs to the positive party in the second cycle.

Abstract

This Research was designed to improve the students’ ability in writing by Describing pictures.The problem of the research was “can describing pictures improve students’ ability in writing?”.  There were many kinds of strategies that could be used in teaching writing, but in this research, the researcher applied only describing pictures, and writing activities focusing on the kinds of activities. The design of this research was Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). Based on the analytical scoring rubric showed that from 63 in the first cycle and got increased to 73 in the second cycle. In the first cycle there were 13 Students of 30 students could reach the minimum score or only 43 % students were success. While in the last cycle there were 27 Students of 30 students could reach even greater that the minimum score or 90% students were success.Based on the conclusion of this research the researcher suggests some points. Firstly, describing pictures could be employed to improve the students’ ability in writing. Secondly, it was suggested that the English teacher could apply describing pictures as one of the alternative techniques that could be used in the teaching of English to all skills especially writing.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research was aimed to investigate; (1) the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English; and (2) the strategies used by the students in overcoming their anxiety in speaking English at the first grade of MAN I Kolaka. This research used a mix method namely quantitative and qualitative. In conducting the research, the researcher collected the data by using questionnaire and interview. The participant of this research were 30 students of class X IPA 1. The result of this research showed that the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English of MAN 1 Kolaka were communicative apprehension, with mean value (3,82) test anxiety with mean value (3,4) fear of negative evaluation with mean value ( 3,67). The result of interviewed showed that there were five strategies that students used to overcome their anxiety in speaking English such as: preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking and resignation.
