Abstract

This paper presents descriptive quantitative research investigating how the Kadatua dialect can influence the English pronunciation of second-grade students of SMPN 1 Maginti. The subjects of this study were 8 second-grade students at SMPN 1 Maginti with Kadatua ethnic background. The research instrument used was an interview and a test. The test was done by asking students to read a list of several English words to record and analyse their pronunciation. The results show that Kadatua dialect influenced students’ pronunciation of the following sounds: /?/, /æ/, /??/, /??/, /a?/, /??/, /e?/, /??/, /ð/, /?/, and /?/. Although some sounds cannot be pronounced correctly, it does not mean they are affected because these sounds do not exist in the Kadatua dialect alone. This would mean that the Kadatua dialect does not affect the overall students' English pronunciation. Some of the sounds that are not influenced by the Kadatua dialect are as follow: /?/, /?/, /i?/, /u?/, /??/, /??/ /e/, /e?/, /a?/, /??/, /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /t?/,/d?/, /f/, /s/, /z/, /?/, /h/, /m/, /n/, /?/, /l/, /r/, /j/, and /w/. Although these sounds can be pronounced properly and correctly, it does not mean that all these sounds are only found in the Kadatua dialect. This ease of pronunciation is identified because of the dialect features similarity of Kadatua with English language.

Abstract

Background. Distance learning has become a major focus in the higher education context, especially in line with digital transformation and the global pandemic. The background to this change creates the need to understand students' perceptions of distance learning, especially in language learning at Indonesian universities. Purpose. This research aims to contribute to the development of a better learning system through a quantitative approach with survey methods. The aim of this research is to analyze student perceptions of distance learning and identify factors that can increase its effectiveness. Method. This research methodology adopts a quantitative study design with a survey approach. The research objects are language students at various universities in Indonesia. The research sample consisted of 30 respondents selected purposively, covering various demographic characteristics. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire distributed via Google Forms, allowing participation of students from various geographic areas. Results. The research results showed that although students felt ready for distance learning, there were concerns regarding inequalities with face-to-face learning. The main challenges involve limited internet connections and communication difficulties. However, opportunities arise through easy access to materials and independent development of skills. Data analysis focuses on the interpretation of results, highlighting the importance of technological infrastructure and more effective communication strategies. Conclusion. The conclusion of this research is that a deeper understanding of student perceptions of distance learning can provide a foundation for improving learning experiences and effectiveness in the future. By understanding the challenges and opportunities students face, educational institutions can direct their efforts towards necessary updates and improvements, so that distance learning can provide a more meaningful and equivalent experience to face-to-face learning.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the development of Indonesia's curriculum and Hong Kong's curriculum, with a focus on identifying the underlying philosophical values and influences embedded in both educational systems. The research also explores the implications of these curricula on various stakeholders involved in their development and implementation. To achieve these objectives, a synthesis research approach was employed, analyzing a combination of empirical and conceptual papers to draw robust conclusions. The study yielded four key findings that shed light on public opinions, philosophy, goals, and implications of the curricula. Firstly, both the Indonesian curriculum and the Hong Kong curriculum received predominantly positive responses from stakeholders, with minor complaints reported through official surveys. Secondly, the philosophical foundation of the Indonesian curriculum centers around social justice, while the Hong Kong curriculum places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusivity. Furthermore, both curricula have implicit purposes that can be inferred from the range of topics covered in the respective curriculum guidebooks. Finally, the implementation of these curricula has led stakeholders in each country to issue policies aimed at consolidating their influence. In Hongkong, the promotion of the Chinese-based course serves to strengthen China's power in the field of English education. Conversely, in Indonesia, efforts have been made to preserve the Indonesian language by removing the English subject at the primary level and reducing the time allocation for English in secondary education. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the development and influences of curricula in Indonesia and Hong Kong, providing valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers.

Abstract

Abstract

The importance of reading comprehension is key for middle school children, especially in descriptive texts where narrative vivid, clear attention to the facts and sensory aspects is needed. But Indonesian eighth-grade students experienced some difficulties in reading because of a lack of vocabulary, have no reading strategy and have lower interest in reading. The purpose of study is to investigate whether the Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR) strategy effective in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive texts. A quasi-experimental approach with pre- and post-test measurements on experimental and control groups was used. Preliminary results revealed that students in both groups had mostly average reading comprehension abilities with little representation of high‐or low‐performers. The group of students that was exposed to RCRR made marked improvement - 77% in the excellent range, and one student at the level of very high. In comparison, the control group, taught in the traditional manner, gained only minimally with 55% achieving the high category and none the very high category. These findings indicate that not only does the RCRR intervention enhance comprehension, but it also leads to more students achieving advanced levels of comprehension. In short, the RCRR approach is a feasible and efficacious approach English teachers to enhance students’ comprehension and engagement with descriptive texts.
