This research aimed at investigating foreign language writing anxiety experienced by Indonesian EFL learners studying at Universitas Negeri Padang. The numbers of participants involved in this survey were 132 students comprising of sophomores, junior, and senior students. This research employed three research instruments: Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) to collect data on students’ levels of writing anxiety; Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) to gauge information about sources of students’ writing anxiety; typologies of tactics to cope with writing anxiety. The result of this research reveals that the level of students’ writing anxiety is moderate. In addition, no significant relationship between students’ writing anxiety level and their academic level is revealed suggesting moderately anxious students outnumbering those with high and low writing anxiety at any academic level. In addition, the sources of students’ writing anxiety are problems with topic choice, linguistic difficulties, and lack of writing practice. The coping strategies used by students to overcome writing anxiety are preparation, positive thinking, relaxation, peer-seeking, and resignation (most-frequent to least frequent respectively).

Power is an inescapable feature in human interaction. The nature of power exists in all social interactions, and it appears in all of humans’ social relations’ (Taylor 2011, p.15). Power can be identified as a significant thing which can differentiate Young Adults (YA) texts from children’s texts in the concept of children’s literature as emphasized by Trites (2002, p.3) that ‘Young Adult novels are about power.’ Power has been discussed by many scholars, but the discussion on power in YA texts in literature class for EFL college students is still limited. Therefore, the discussion on the nature of power in YA texts can be an interesting literary analysis in igniting a brighter future of teaching literature for EFL college students. The aim of this paper is to discuss the nature of power in two YA dystopian texts: Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Game (2008) and Pete Hautman’s Rash (2006). This paper compares and contrasts the nature of power in respect to the protagonists’ growing understanding of their place in the dystopian world. Through the discussion, this paper identifies the operations of power; the relationship between knowledge and power; and the construction of youth agency in Young Adults dystopian lliterature.

Fairy tales plays a significant role ‘in the socialization processes of the child who reads them’ through cultural norms represented in them (Kuykendal and Sturm 2007, p.38). One of the popular fairy tales which may structure readers’ imagination is Little Red Riding Hood (LRRH). This fairy tale is very popular as Beckett (2002, p.xv) states that ‘No folk or fairy tales has been so relentlessly reinterpreted, recontextualized, and retold over the centuries as Little Red Riding Hood.’ The tale of LRRH has gone through many adaptations and modifications throughout its history. Zipes (1993) in his book, The Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood, explains in details the numerous classic and modern variants of LRRH. Through this paper I will discuss how to do an alternative activity for literary analysis at EFL classroom by showing a discussion on three selected classic variants of LRRH in the way how they may reflect the change of childhood concept. These variants are selected from Zipes’ book. They consist of early folktale version, Perrault’s version, and Brothers Grimm’s version. The focus of discussion in this paper is the assumptions about sexuality and childhood in selected versions of classic LRRH. I argue that the issue of sexuality clearly exists in the evolution of selected classic variants of LRRH even though the sexuality details may be much less emphasized because of the change in the conceptions of childhood. The result of literary analysis in this paper concludes that the implied readers of LRRH are positioned to be sympathetic to the young female protagonist who should have been clever enough to encounter the sexuality danger. Key words:Little Red Riding Hood, fairy tales, literary criticism
