This thesis is the analysis of a novel which written by Chris Abani entitled Graceland (2004). It explores the issue of step up efforts to enlightenment which reflected by the main character. It is also intended to find out the contribution of fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict), and setting in revealing the issue of efforts to enlightenment. This analysis is related to the concept of life instinct which self-awareness by Sigmund Freud that is supported by the text-based and context-based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows about the way the main character effort to enlightenment in dealing with any situation in his life by building self-awareness, gaining thinking skill and having vocational skill.

Presupposition as property of language is used to build and influence audience’s opinion by the language users. In the news, presupposition triggers is a sign to trigger the use of presupposition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of presupposition triggers in Israeli-Palestinian news in the two online news; Al-Jazeera and Fox news. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research is the Israeli-Palestinian news in two online Al-Jazeera and Fox news. The news that is analyzed are two news from Al-Jazeera and one news from Fox news. This data were analyzed based on Khaleel’s theory (2010) about presupposition triggers. The results of analysis showed that in Al-Jazeera, the highest occurrence is existential (definite description) that occurred 28 times (43%), and 20 times (40%) in Fox news. In addition both Al-Jazeera and Fox news used change of state verb in lexical, and adverbial clause in structural as the dominant types. In contrast, the difference on the two online news is the use of verb of judging.

This thesis is the analysis of a play script written by Stephan Karam entitled The Humans (2015). It explores the issue of the Anxiety of American Middle Class reflected by the protagonist Erick Blake as an representation of American middle class. It is also intended to find out the contribution of fictional devices such as character, stage direction and setting in revealing the issue of the Anxiety of American middle class. This analysis is related to the concept of Anxiety which developed by Sigmund Freud (1949) that is supported by the text –based and context-based interpretation. The result of the analysis from the play script The Humans (2015) shows about the anxiety of American middle class that experienced by protagonist can be seen through causes and symptoms of anxiety.

Tujuan analisa ini adalah untuk mengungkapkan isu pembunuh berdrah dingin pada novel Child 44 karya Tom Rob Smith. Permasalah pada analisa ini adalah untuk mengetahui sejauh mana novel tersebut mengungkapkan kejahatan-kejahatan pemerintah Rusia dalam menjalankan pemeritahan. Analisa ini menggunakan implied author untuk mengeluarkan bukti-bukti yang besangkutan dengan isu pembunuh berdarah dingin. Analisa ini menggunakan konsep dekolonisasi oleh Frantz Fanon. Analisa ini dilakukan berdasarkan interpretasi teks dan interpretasi berbasis konteks. Hasil dari analisa ini adalah kejahatan-kejahatan yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah Rusia untuk mempertahankan kekuasaannya. kejahatan-kejahatan ini diperbuat dalam dua cara: pengaturan situasi dan pemberlakukan kekuasaan.

ABSTRACT Autistic savant as one of the language disorders can be found in daily life and it also can be portrayed in literary works and films. An autistic savant is a person with autism who has the limitation in most social functions but has cognitive abilities, such as possessing some outstanding memories and computational skills. This research aims to find out the types of language disorder and to find out the dominant type of language disorders found in autistic savant portrayed in Levinson’s Rain Man film. This research used a descriptive method. The data used in this research were the utterances of an autistic savant. The result of this research shows that the type of expressive language disorder was obtained with the occurrence percentage of 67.7% while the receptive language disorder type was obtained by the occurrence percentage of 32.3%. From this percentage, it can be seen that the most dominant type of language disorders experienced by autistic savant in Rain Man film is expressive language disorder. It means the autistic savant as an adult person also has difficulty in expressing or producing language. Abbreviation is the process of cutting one word, some parts of the word and the combination of words into words in the new form. Abbreviation is used by all kinds of people who share situations of interests and it is often used in informal situation. The use of abbreviation is not only found in daily conversation, discussion, or speech, but also found in online interaction in social media. This study aims to find out the types and the meaning of abbreviation words and types internet language in Twitter used by Hollywood pop singers. This research used Schendl (2001) and Weakly (2006) theories about five types of abbreviation words. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from tweets that have been posted by Hollywood pop singers on June 2019. The result showed that from 47 data that have been collected, there were four types out of abbreviation that have been found from five types of Schendl an Weakly abbreviations. They are clipping (14,9%), initialism (34,0%), blend (10,6%), contraction (40,4%) and acronym is not found from the data. From the finding it can be concluded that the type of abbreviation which is dominantly used by the singers in Twitter is contraction.

Novel is a kind of literacy work that contains of sentences. Every sentences has grammatical and lexical devices in sentences or text that is called cohesive devices. This study aims at to know the types of cohesive devices in novel written by an Indonesian popular writer, Andrea Hirata. The title of the novelis Laskar Pelangi, that novel has been translated into English entitled “The Rainbow Troops”. This Study analyze English version of this novel. The method to analyze is descriptive qualitativee. The data of this study are all sentences that contain of cohesive devices in chapter 30 of this novel. The result of this study show that, all types of grammatical and lexical devices exist in chapter 30. Where, grammatical devices is the mostly used in this chapter. Reference devices are the mostly used than the two grammatical, substitution and conjunction. Personal reference is a type of reference devices. It can be proved base on discussion of this research, give the fact that reference device is a criteria of child literature, in this case is Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops novel talk about children and their childhood. From the previous study also concluded that, children writing also have reference devices as the most frequently used in their writing about literature.

In the study of language, what people do by saying something is called speech acts. Speech acts is not only found in everyday life but also in the film. This research concerns with speech acts produced by the main character in Shrek movie script. The aims of this research are to describe the types of speech acts are produced by the characters in animated of western movie entitled “Tangled”. Data of this research in the form of utterances that involved illocutionary acts used by each character in that movie which is taken from YouTube then classify them into categories of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s of theory. The types of research in this study are qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research is applied to analyze the data in the form of the text. Quantitative research is used to count the member of speech acts used by the characters in that movie to conclude which types of speech acts is dominantly used. Based on data analysis, found that there are four of illocutionary acts found in that movie; directives, representatives, expressives, and commissives. This study shows that the dominant speech acts used is directives which 44% of percentage. It indicates that the characters of the movie “Tangled” use directives because some of them want the other character to do something.

AbstractThis study is aimed to seek how far the novel of We Cast A Shadow (2019) by Maurice Carlos Ruffin reflected the issues of racial discrimination. Racial discrimination refers to the character who face discrimination through mistreatment and violence that make a great impact in the future. The unnamed character had been through a difficult time since he was a child. This analysis is related to the postcolonial theory proposed by Pieterse and Powell (2016). The use of theory was based on the interpretation in the text and context of the novel. The data was collected from the quotation in the novel. The data collection was in the form of sentences and paragraphs. This research was a descriptive and content analysis study. The result of the study shows that the racial discrimination of African-American character can be seen through violence to African-American and arbitrary Policy on Economic Aspect. In conclusion, in this post-civil rights movement era, African-Americans still face racial discrimination.

Word-formation is the study of words, dealing with the construction or formation rules of words in a certain language. This research paper is aimed to investigate word formation process used in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” novel by Lewis Carroll and “Alice in Wonderland” movie by Walt Disney. This research paper uses O’Grady (1997) and Yule (2010) theories about word formation process. This study used qualitative approach with descriptive method. The writer found affixation as the dominant type used to form the words in the novel that occurred in 286 data or about 48,89%, and 15 data or about 30,61% cliticization as the dominant type to form the words in the movie script.
