Abstract

The purpose of this study was to undertake a thorough study of a news article entitled "31 Policemen Questioned in Kanjuruhan Stadium Tragedy" by looking at both its contextual and textual elements. To analyze the data, the research used a content analysis and discourse analysis design. While the contextual study relied on Dell Hymes' ethnography of communication, notably the Speaking Model (Hymes, 1974), the textual analysis concentrated on the coherence devices given by Halliday and Hasan (1976). All essential elements, such as the setting, participants, ends, act order, key, instruments, and norms, were identified, according to the contextual analysis. The four content categories of reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction were found in the textual analysis; however, the article did not fully contain all sub-categories.

Abstract

Public service advertisements (PSAs) play an important role in conveying social messages to shape people's behavior positively. However, the effectiveness of these messages is highly dependent on the persuasive language strategies used. This study aims to analyze persuasive language strategies in public service advertisements from a pragmatic perspective, focusing on the use of metaphors, repetitions, imperatives, and language styles that are appropriate to the social and cultural context. The method used is an explanatory literature study, which collects and analyzes data from various journal articles, books, and related research reports. Data were collected through documentation studies, then analyzed using a qualitative content analysis approach to identify patterns and main themes in persuasive language strategies. The results of the study indicate that the use of metaphors and repetitions consistently increases the emotional appeal and memory of the audience, while the use of imperatives and framing helps strengthen the urgency of the message. This pragmatic approach allows advertisements to adapt messages to the social and cultural values of the community, thereby strengthening the effectiveness of communication. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how language strategies can influence audience perceptions and behavior in the context of public service advertisements, as well as the importance of considering cultural context in designing effective messages.

Abstract

Academic presentation skills are crucial components of academic literacy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, yet many students continue to experience challenges in delivering effective academic presentations. This study explores how EFL students’ academic presentation skills are enhanced through classroom-based instructional practices. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research was conducted in an undergraduate EFL classroom at English Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations, students’ academic presentation videos, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns related to students’ skill enhancement over the course of the instructional process. The findings reveal that students’ academic presentation skills were enhanced through iterative presentation practice, explicit instruction on presentation structure and language use, and reflective activities that encouraged self-awareness and peer feedback. In addition, the integration of visual and verbal resources supported students’ confidence and clarity in presenting academic content. This study highlights the importance of pedagogically structured support and reflective learning in enhancing EFL students’ academic presentation skills. The findings offer practical insights for EFL lecturers seeking to design effective academic presentation instruction and contribute to the growing body of qualitative research on academic literacy development in higher education.
