Abstract

Deli River has been used by people for a long time for washing clothes, utensils, bathing and as latrine. The human activity in the estuary of Deli River causes the river polluted with organic and inorganic pollutant and harm microorganism. The type of waste pollution in waters is related to the type and number of microorganism in the water. The urban and rural waste is not only increase the growth of coliform bacteria but also increase the number of other pathogen bacteria. Deli River Estuary has been polluted indicated by total bacteria count in the area is (811 x 105 cfu/ml). This exceeded threshold value determined by the Regulation of Minister of Living Environment (2004). There were 9 species of potential pathogen bacteria identified using API 20 E i.e: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, Klebsiella ornithinolytica, Cedecea lapegei, Aeromonas hydrophyla, Aeromonas sobria, Aeromonas caviae, Ewingella americana and Vibrio fluvialis.Keyword : Deli River, E.coli, Pathogen Bacteria.

Abstract

Eastern Little Tuna is one of the fisheries commodity that has high economic value in Medan. This type of fish is the most demand in the local market, thus it becomes the main target forfisherman to catch. However, this activity has negative impact for the population of EasternLittle Tuna. This study was done at KUD Gabion on November 2014 until April 2015. Thisresearch aims to study about the growth pattern, factor condition of plumpness, and also therate of exploitation in order to determine management model for the fish resource. Theprimary data is the total length and weight of 371 samples of Eastern Little Tuna, while thesecondary data is the temperature of sea surface. The cohort length of fish is separated byBhattacarya method in FISAT II software. The Von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimatedwere asymtotic length (L∞) = 628,95 mm, growth coefficient (K) = 0,24 year-1 and the age atzero length (t0) = -0,30 from Pauly’s empirical equation. Then, the growth equation forEastern Little Tuna is Lt = 628.95 (1‐e[-0.24(t+0,30)]), whereas value of b obtained from relationsof lenght – weight Eastern Little Tuna is 2,963. A growth pattern of Eastern Little Tuna isnegative allometric with an equation growth W=0,00002L2,963. The highest and the lowestvalue of factor condition are 0,40 and 2,11. The rate of total mortality (Z) Eastern Little Tunais 2,097 year-1 with natural mortality rate (M) 0,30 year-1 and fishing mortality rate (F) 1,79year-1 thus the rate of exploitation is obtained with the amount 0,85 and the value of thisexploitation rate has exceeded the value of the optimum exploitation, which is 0,5.Keywords: Eastern Little Tuna, Growth, Mortality, Malacca Strait

Abstract

African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822) transgenic containing Pangasius hypothalmus Growth Hormone (PhGH) has better performance compared with non-transgenic. However, before transgenic African catfish are released and utilized, their genetic impact on the natural environment must be examined. Predator avoidance is one of the major fitness traits determining potential environment risk. Transgene detection was performed using the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method and electrophoresis. Furthermore, the observation of the performance of growth including the growth of the length (the average length of the fish at the end - the average length of the fish at the beginning), the growth in weight (average weight of fish in the end – average fish at the beginning) and the survival rate (the number of fish that live in end / number of fish lived at the beginning). Results indicate that non-trangenic had better predator avoidance than transgenic African catfish. Non-transgenic has a better growth performance than transgenic African catfish and has a higher survival rate. Transgenic African catfish could be used for commercial aquaculture without affecting the natural environment because the increased susceptibility of transgenic to predators would most likely decrease or eliminate the transgenic genotype. Keywords: Clarias gariepinus, Transgenic, Environmental Risk
