Abstract

This study investigates the meanings embedded within song lyrics from the Acehnese local band Apache13’s album Bék Panik (translated as ‘Don’t Panic’). The primary aim is to analyze the types of meaning present in these Acehnese songs using a semantic approach. The objectives are to identify and categorize meanings based on six distinct types: conceptual, social, affective, collocative, connotative, and associative. The qualitative analysis of the song lyrics revealed 186 distinct meanings. Conceptual meaning was the predominant type, with a majority of instances, followed by social meaning, affective meaning, collocative meaning, and connotative meaning. Notably, no occurrences of associative meaning were found. The prevalence of conceptual meaning in the lyrics suggests a focus on social criticism, conditions, and personal narratives within Apache13’s songs. Conversely, the limited use of connotative meaning aligns with a preference for direct and explicit expression among Acehnese youth, reflecting contemporary cultural norms. This study contributes to understanding the nuanced meanings conveyed through contemporary Acehnese music, reflecting generational differences in expressive language use.

The sources of data were 19 songs taken from Thriller and Invincible albums by Michael Jackson and the lyrics of the songs. The research design used was descriptive qualitative research with documentation analysis as the technique of data collection. The result showed that there were 65 personification expressions found in the albums. Those 65 personifications were categorized into four types of personification as proposed by Dorst et al. (2011) namely: conventionalized personification (33 expressions), novel personification (20 expressions), default personification (12 expressions), and personification-with-metonymy (0 expressions). The idea of conventionalized personification presents in the lyrics is to dig out the beauty and tranquility of nature to life. Also, these songs are assumed as one of the various English materials in language teaching in the future since it has no sarcasm and motivating contexts throughout the lyrics themselves.

Abstract

Translation strategies have been the subject of extensive investigation. Most people believe that translators use specific strategies and that basic translation strategies are sometimes insufficient. As a result, numerous scholars have investigated and analyzed various translation techniques from various perspectives. This study determined the translation strategies in the novel of Negeri 5 Menara and its English Version, The Land of Five Towers using Baker's (2011) framework. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative technique to determine the translation strategies in Negeri 5 Menara and its English version, The Land of Five Towers. There were 130 data points in all. According to the findings, 11% about the use of the more general word, 14 % in the use of the more neutral or expensive word, 8% of cultural substitution, 5% of loan words, 4% of omission, paraphrase with related terms accounted for 57% of all translation tactics, while paraphrasing with unrelated words accounted for 2%, and there was no data on illustration. There were 21 uncategorized data points for every given strategy. It was predicted that in the future, a translator, who is also a pre-service teacher, should widen his or her translation methodologies in order to combat non-equivalence translation.

Abstract

The use of swear words is common and even popular in movies for adult viewers. However, misunderstanding and ignorance of the intended viewers can cause younger viewers to be exposed to movies with various profanities. The Simpsons, an animated movie, is a good example of this phenomenon. This animated movie is known to contain obscene language expressions which can be mistakenly assumed to be intended for younger viewers. This study sought to identify the kinds and purposes of expletives used in The Simpsons. The current study used Hughes’ framework to analyze the types of swear words, and Andersson and Trudgill's framework was used to analyze their functions. Data were gathered from seven episodes drawn from different seasons of the animated series. Of 102 swear words found in the dialogues of the episodes, seven types of swear words were identified, including anatomical insult, excrement, sexual intercourse, personal background, mental illness, animal term, and religious oath. Additionally, four swearing meanings and functions were discovered abusive, auxiliary, expletive, and humorous. Therefore, it is expected that general readers will express themselves more thoughtfully, be able to identify the target audience for movies, and make more informed decisions when choosing movies for younger audiences.

In this study, a quantitative method with a true experimental design was used, and a total of N=90 students participated, with N=50 students chosen using purposive sampling from two different classes to serve as samples. The instrument for the study included tests, a pre-test, and a post-test. The data was then analysed statistically to determine the results of the given pre-test and post-test. The average score increased after the post-test in terms of receiving results in terms of improving students' English speaking. Accuracy turned out to be one of the most important aspects of speaking that improved markedly. It means that students learned from native speakers through English YouTube videos, and their accuracy has enormously improved as a result. Meanwhile, students from civil servant families scored 95 on the post-test, while students from non-civil servant families scored 92.5. It was discovered that there is only a minor difference in improvement between civil and non-civil servant students' backgrounds. Teachers should consider using authentic English YouTube videos in the classroom to assist children of their English speaking skills.

Abstract

The current study examined students perspectives on the use of one of the regional learning management systems (LMS), E-Belajar (hereafter EB), at two Islamic boarding schools in Aceh, Indonesia. Fifty EFL Islamic boarding school students agreed to participate in this study. This study used a mixed method design, combining surveys and interviews. The data from the questionnaire was analysed quantitatively. Meanwhile, thematic analysis was performed on the interview data. The results revealed both good and negative attitudes of EB in ELT. Positive replies indicate that EB improved English comprehension and promoted autonomous learning, assisted students in completing English tasks on time by using the alert feature as a reminder, developed enjoyable and engaging learning activities using videos and online games, and encouraged students confidence in expressing ideas. However, negative voices highlighted the teachers failure to advise students on how to use EB properly, resulting in incorrect task submission. Students also preferred in person learning, and students had trouble communicating effectively. Students further pointed out that EB did not enhance listening skill, reading skill, speaking skill, writing skill, or grammar understanding significantly; only few students believed that EB helped promote English language skills, indicating that further efforts through EB was required. Students were also unable to access certain EB services, such as e-counselling and e-monitoring. Furthermore, dormitories have limited access to the internet. These circumstances became another drawback for students.

Abstract

Ruangguru, one of Indonesia's prepaid applications, has facilitated autonomous learning for students. Ruangguru (henceforth RG) is a mobile application enhances online learning organizations by aligning it with Indonesia's curriculum. RG offered students a platform with distinctive characteristics to support online study in several subjects. The present study examines students' viewpoints on using Ruangguru, one of Indonesia's online learning prepaid platforms, and ascertains its advantages and disadvantages. The current study employed a qualitative methodology, utilizing interviews to collect data. The participants comprised senior high school students from several cities in Indonesia who were enrolled in regular classes, subscribed to RG, and willingly provided their consent by signing a consent form. The findings revealed that RG possesses several benefits, including the ability to set one's own pace, user-friendliness, independent learning, and a flexible platform. It allowed pupils to learn without any limitations on time or location. However, the RG was unable to substitute regular classes with the presence of teachers, the decrease of social interactions in learning, the significant disparity between the wealthy and the impoverished, and the diminishing role of teachers. Ruangguru's primary focus is students' academic achievement. Yet, it is crucial to resolve other notable aspects, such as inadequate feedback, teacher guidance, and lack of peer interaction. As a further recommendation, to evaluate the effectiveness of the RG, it is also recommended that students' achievement and the impact of using RG in the EFL classroom be analyzed and cross-referenced.
