Abstract

Teaching Javanese script at the senior high school level still faces challenges from student limitations and pedagogical aspects. This study aims to explore the difficulties experienced by senior high school students in learning Javanese script and to identify the factors causing these difficulties from the perspectives of both students and teachers. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through a questionnaire administered to 2.437 students and in-depth interviews with 14 Javanese language teachers. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data presentation, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the main difficulties experienced by students include reading Javanese script sentences (72.9%), understanding Javanese vocabulary (71.3%), memorizing script forms (64.1%), identifying word divisions (59%), and distinguishing specific phonemes. The factors contributing to these difficulties include low literacy habits, minimal technology use, teaching methods unsuitable for the students' characteristics, limited learning resources, and inadequate learning feedback. This study offers novelty by formulating a contextual, technology-based learning strategy for the Javanese script that aligns with students’ characteristics. Its contribution lies in enriching the field of local language education and providing new directions for the development of more adaptive educational policies.

Abstract

The shift in learning models following the COVID-19 pandemic, which occurred without adequate preparation, has added new challenges for students with special needs. As an educational institution in an urban area, Jakarta State University should be an ideal example of an inclusive campus. Although opportunities for students with special needs to enroll have expanded, this has not been matched by specific preparations for learning accommodations. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by students with special needs in obtaining appropriate learning accommodations. Additionally, this study seeks to explore the shift in learning accommodation needs of students with special needs post-pandemic COVID-19. A mixed-method research approach was selected, with quantitative data as the primary focus. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires and interviews, while quantitative data analysis utilized descriptive statistical analysis. The research subjects consisted of 34 students with special needs from eight faculties, enrolled between 2018 and 2024. The students with special needs involved in this study had visual impairments, hearing impairments, physical impairments, low vision, ADHD, learning difficulties, and autism. The results of the study showed diversity in learning accommodation needs for each type of special need. However, these differences could be predicted based on the type and level of special needs. The five aspects studied—course materials, teaching methods, facilities and equipment, peer support, and the need for self-regulation skills—highlight the importance of further attention from the university. These aspects of learning accommodations reflect a shift in learning modes influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift adds challenges for students with special needs in preparing themselves for the workforce.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a digital learning medium in the form of a flipbook-based e-book to enhance the understanding of unggah-ungguh—the levels of speech in the Javanese language—among tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Gebog Kudus. The research employed a development model adapted from Sugiyono, consisting of several stages: needs analysis, data collection, product design, expert validation, and product revision based on feedback. The validation results indicated that the Javanese unggah-ungguh flipbook-based e-book was feasible for use in learning, with positive evaluations in terms of content relevance, language clarity, visual design, and media usability. Moreover, the e-book was considered capable of increasing student interest in a topic that was previously seen as challenging and less engaging. The findings suggest that interactive digital learning media can serve as an innovative solution in Javanese language instruction, as they present materials in a more engaging and student-friendly manner, align with students' needs, and are compatible with technological advancements in today's educational landscape.
