Abstract

Genetics is a biology topic that applies several mathematics principles. It causes numeracy skills in genetics to be important for students. Therefore, a good mastery of numeracy skills could help students to solve genetics problems and achieve genetics competencies. Based on this statement, this study was conducted to analyze the numeracy skills of class XII based on the Minimum Competency Assessment (Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum/AKM). Fifty-four students were involved as research participants. Furthermore, 30 questions were used in this study. The result showed that the numeracy skills of class XII were still in the low category due to the lack of experience in solving AKM-type questions, learning experience, mathematics ability, mastery of genetics concepts, and students' perceptions of genetics. The low students’ performance on numeracy skills should be considered especially by an education provider to adjust the learning implementation that can improve students’ numeracy skills in genetics.

Abstract

In cell material, many concepts are abstract and can cause students to experience difficulties in understanding them. Every concept in biology learning is interconnected so that every concept that is built can influence the formation of the next concept. However, often students' initial concepts are misconceptions, namely the concepts possessed by students conflict with the concepts raised by experts. A good learning experience is needed so that students can understand the concept correctly. One learning model that provides a learning experience to discover and understand concepts is the Think Talk Write learning model. The purpose of this research is to remediate misconceptions about cell material by using the Think Talk Write learning model. This study used an experimental method with the type of pre-experimental research and one-group pretest-posttest research design. The subjects in this study were students of class XI IPA at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Rancaekek consisting of 36 students. Based on the results of data processing, it was found that misconceptions in the pretest resulted in 12.78% and in the posttest it decreased to 6.25%. So it can be concluded that the Think Talk Write learning model can reduce students' misconceptions about cell material.

Abstract

Research on the application of the Brain-based Learning (BBL) Model in biology education has the potential to provide a deeper understanding of how the brain processes biological information. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review of previous studies on the application of the BBL Model in the context of biology education. A systematic literature review method was employed using the Scopus and Google Scholar databases as data sources. Out of the total articles found from 2013, a total of 17 articles met the established criteria and were then carefully analyzed. The analysis revealed several key findings, including (1) The trend of BBL research in biology education peaked in 2019; (2) The distribution of BBL research is still uneven in Indonesia, with the majority in the Java region; (3) Quantitative research methods dominate BBL research; (4) The implementation of BBL is widely relevant across various educational levels, but has not been applied to all levels; (5) The Classification System of Living Organisms is the most commonly chosen topic in BBL research; (6) The implementation of BBL has a positive impact on various aspects of student abilities. Based on these findings, BBL holds promise in supporting biology education. However, further research is needed to explore the BBL Model in a broader and more diverse context. Such research can delve deeper into various research methods, research subjects, and learning topics. Thus, more innovative and adaptive learning practices can be developed through a more comprehensive understanding of the potential of BBL in biology education.

Abstract

In the digital era, data and information in biological sciences are increasingly presented in quantitative forms that require processing and analysis, making it essential to train students in numeracy literacy. This study aims to see changes in students' biological mathematical attitudes through the application of the Brain Based Learning Model combined with numeracy literacy tasks. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. The research sample consisted of 28 students in the experimental class and 30 students in the control class who were selected randomly. The instrument used was a biological mathematical attitude questionnaire with 15 statements on a Likert scale. The results showed that the N-Gain score for students' biological mathematical attitudes was higher in the experimental class with a medium category of 0,51, while in the control class it was in the low category with a score of 0,29. This shows that the Brain Based Learning model is more effective in increasing students' positive attitudes towards the integration of mathematics in biology learning. Based on the results of this study, teachers are expected to consider using the Brain Based Learning Model as a potential alternative learning model, especially in supporting the implementation of the independent curriculum. In addition, it is hoped that other researchers can explore the potential of the Brain Based Learning Model on broader biology topics and other levels of education to expand its positive impact.

Abstract

Plant physiology is material that is considered difficult, and studying it requires adequate numeracy literacy, especially in practicums.  Thus, it is necessary to reveal the student's numeracy literacy profile and the level of conceptual change before and after the practicum. This study used a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test group.  The pre-test regarding numeracy literacy, which refers to the Minimum Competency Assessment, is given to Biology Education Department students who are contracting the Plant Physiology course in the odd semester 2022/2023, conducted before practicum about accumulation of mineral nutrients in plant cells, nutrient culture, water potential, and osmotic potential. After each practicum, students are assigned to answer response questions, and it ends with a post-test. The results showed that there was an increase in student numerical literacy from the very low category (42.7) into the moderate category (62.1) with level of conceptual change in the construction and N-gain in low categories. Although it has the potential to improve students' numeracy literacy, the Plant Physiology practicum needs to be improved, for example, by involving practical students in preparing substances and strengthening the lecturers in their responses.

Abstract

Literacy skills in reading and numeracy in Indonesia are classified as low, so the government has made new policies, one of which is the application of questions based on the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) in the National Assessment. Observation results from several high schools in Pekanbaru, Riau, have not shown the application of AKM questions to biology learning. This research aimed to produce AKM-based reading and numeracy literacy instruments on high school plant and animal bioprocess materials used in Research and Development (R&D) design, where the subjects were grade XII students at three high schools in Pekanbaru city. Data collection instruments were the test instruments that had been developed. Data were analyzed using Rasch modelling assisted by Winstep software, including Wright map analysis, person capability analysis, item capability analysis, scalogram analysis, and question item analysis. The results show that most students have a logic score below 0.0, meaning that reading and numeracy literacy skills and understanding concepts are still low. Four out of 63 students have inappropriate answer patterns, indicating that students did not work on the questions seriously. Then, the analysis results show 14 fit questions; having a Cronbach alpha value of 0.84 with a very high interpretation, a person reability value of 0.77 with sufficient interpretation, and an item reability value of 0.92 in the very high category; the difficulty level of the question items is in line with the rules of the test instrument development, since there is a spread of difficulty of the question items starting from very difficult, hard, medium, easy, and very easy. Thus, it is concluded that the instrument test can be used to measure reading literacy and numeracy skills based on AKM on plant and animal bioprocess materials.

Abstract

Arabica coffee bean (Coffea arabica L.) is Indonesia's leading commodity, with Bandung Regency as the largest producer in West Java. The exocarp and mesocarp of coffee fruits known as cascara have potential health benefits as a beverage. Cascara is usually dried by direct sunlight before consumption, but this process is prone to weather disturbances and contamination. The use of dehydrators is more controlled to maintain metabolite content, but there has been no research on cascara from coffee cultivars in Bandung Regency dried by this method. This study aims to obtain the metabolite profile of Typica arabica coffee cultivar cascara dried using direct sun and dehydrator. The cascara samples were taken from Gunung Puntang Coffee Plantation, Bandung Regency, and extracted using maceration method with 70% ethanol p.a. solvent. The metabolite content was analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), which specifically detects volatile metabolites. Non-volatile compounds were not within the scope of this study. The results showed that direct sun-dried cascara had 6 metabolites, while dehydrator-dried had 15 metabolites. Both samples were dominated by caffeine (sun-dried cascara: 46.61%, dehydrator cascara: 24.44%). Five metabolites were found in both samples, with 1 unique metabolite in solar cascara and 10 unique metabolites in dehydrator cascara. This study showed differences in metabolite content in Typica cultivar cascara with different drying methods.
