Abstract

The necessity of equipping students for multicultural interactions has become progressively vital in higher education.  Students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) must develop both linguistic proficiency and reflective awareness, along with social sensitivity, as they engage with culturally diverse contexts.  Many learners, however, acquire only theoretical cultural knowledge, lacking introspective skills and emotional insight.  This study seeks to develop and assess a reflective deep learning module based on the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) framework to improve students' social awareness in cross-cultural settings.  Data were acquired using needs analysis questionnaires, reflective journals, interviews, and classroom observations, utilizing a research and development methodology including 24 sixth-semester students in the analysis phase and 10 students in the pilot phase. Research indicates that reflective journaling, case-based learning, role-playing, attentive observation, and experiencing cross-cultural simulations markedly enhanced students' capacity to interpret cultural differences, empathize with others, and respond effectively to intercultural issues.  The kids' narratives illustrate a shift from superficial cultural acknowledgment to profound emotional, cognitive, and behavioral understanding.  This study enhances the existing research on reflective deep learning as a transformational pedagogical method in EFL teaching, presenting a viable strategy for fostering cross-cultural sensitivity in higher education institutions.

Abstract

This study used a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews as the data collection technique. Data were analyzed through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students' English achievement was influenced by six main factors: motivation, prior educational experience, teacher-student relationship, socioeconomic factors, classroom environment, and parental support. These six factors interact with each other in shaping readiness, comfort, and external support that facilitate students' learning success. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a correlation between students' reading attitudes and students' reading achievement in English. The research method is a quantitative method. The population in this study were all class VIII students at SMPN 7 Kotabumi for the 2022/2023 academic year, consisting of 261 class VIII students, so in sampling the researcher used cluster random sampling in class VIII F of 32 students. The instruments used are questionnaires and documentation. Try out were also carried out at SMPN 1 Kotabumi for the 2022/2023 academic year in class VIII A for 32 students. The average reading achievement statistical result is 74.50. The normality test results for reading attitudes were 0.158 and reading achievement were 0.719 > (0.05), so it can be concluded that the data was normally distributed. The Homogeneity test results are 0.957 > (0.05) so it can be concluded that the variables of reading attitude and reading achievement have a linear correlation. So the hypothesis test is 0.127>(0.05)= 0.127 and the variable Reading Attitude and Reading Achievement has a positive correlation, meaning that if Reading Attitude increases, Reading Achievement will also increase.

Abstract

This study explored the effects of implementing collaborative Digital Storytelling (DST) on the writing proficiency of junior high school learners in Indonesia, this study focused on Tompkins et al.'s (1984) five stages of writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The main issue identified was students’ challenges in writing, especially when dealing with English as a Foreign Language (EFL), requiring innovative pedagogy. Objectives included analyzing improvements in writing proficiency, group collaboration dynamics, and pedagogical implications under the Merdeka Curriculum. A qualitative case study design was employed. Findings revealed that DST significantly enhanced student engagement, creativity, and writing skills across stages, with 75% of students improving from "Low" to "High" levels. Tools like Canva and CapCut made the process student-centered. In conclusion, collaborative DST offers a valuable strategy for improving writing instruction, integrating into curricula to foster 21st-century skills and address cultural barriers in Indonesian EFL settings, contributing to Merdeka Belajar reforms.
