Abstract

The program of Pengabdian Kepada Masysarakat (Public Community Service) is aimed the literacy improvement training for elementary and junior high school children aims to provide students as well as teachers with information assistance about the importance of literacy for the development of knowledge in Indonesian society. This activity was carried out by lecturers and students from the English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, HKBP Nommensen University with students from Czech University. The program of PKM Activity was started on July 25th, 2022, and ended on July 26th, 2022. It is very clear that the cause of the low literacy ability (in terms of reading) is the oral tradition that is still rooted in society. In addition, related to elementary schools, the school system still does not provide opportunities for literacy traditions to students. This also happened to students at SD and SMP HKBP Sidorame Medan. This problem is trying to be minimized by conducting community service programs related to literacy for elementary and junior high school students. The Project represents one of the important areas of development of reading literacy in school. The most positive feature is the fact that there are large numbers of identified target groups, not only students but also teachers. Teachers themselves should expose students to literacy. Literacy should become a culture.

The results of the study show a total of 604 occurrences of impoliteness strategies, with positive impoliteness dominating at 37.1% through expressions of belittlement or disrespect. Bald on record impoliteness strategies also appeared significantly, mainly in the form of direct criticism without mitigation (10.76%). Meanwhile, negative impoliteness and sarcasm or mock impoliteness appeared in lower percentages, but still described a consistent pattern of verbal aggression. These findings indicate that netizens' responses tend to be evaluative-negative and are often realized through direct attacks on the self-image of public officials. This study concludes that netizens' rudeness is triggered by dissatisfaction with government statements and reinforced by the characteristics of digital communication, which allows for spontaneous expression without strong social control.

Abstract

Code-switching and code-mixing frequently occur in bilingual or multilingual communities, including in classroom interactions. In the teaching and learning process, lecturers and students often switch or mix languages to make communication easier and more effective. This phenomenon is commonly found in English classes where both Indonesian and English are used during discussions. This research aims to identify the types of code-switching and code-mixing used in classroom interaction and to determine the most dominant type used by the lecturer and students. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained through classroom observation of fifth semester students of the English Education Study Program. The researcher recorded the classroom interaction and transcribed the utterances containing code-switching and code-mixing. The total data found in this research were 80 utterances. The findings show that there are three types of code-switching and three types of code-mixing used in the classroom interaction. The types of code-switching include inter-sentential switching (4 data or 5%), intra-sentential switching (19 data or 23.75%), and tag switching (13 data or 16.25%). Meanwhile, the types of code-mixing consist of insertion (33 data or 41.25%), alternation (6 data or 7.5%), and congruent lexicalization (5 data or 6.25%). The most dominant type found in this study is insertion. In conclusion, code-switching and code-mixing play an important role in classroom communication. The lecturer and students use both languages to clarify explanations, express ideas more easily, and maintain interaction during the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of social and cultural factors on the acquisition of English-speaking skills among university students in Indonesia. While previous research has highlighted the importance of cognitive and instructional factors in second language acquisition, relatively few studies have examined the broader sociocultural context of English learning in the Indonesian EFL setting. Using a mixed-methods design, this research involved 33 sixth-semester students of the English Education Program at Universitas HKBP Nommensen, Medan, comprising 8 males and 25 females from Batak Toba and Nias ethnic backgrounds. Data were collected through speaking tests, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observations. The findings reveal that social background factors—including socioeconomic status, access to English courses, and family environment—affect students’ speaking proficiency. Additionally, cultural exposure, including engagement with English media and intercultural experiences, plays a crucial role in enhancing fluency, confidence, and communicative competence. The study concludes that language learning is inseparable from its sociocultural context, emphasizing the need for culturally responsive pedagogy in Indonesian higher education.
