Abstract

This research discusses a pragmatic study, focusing on the film "Animated Movie The Emperor's New Groove" and its maxims violations. Knowing the types of maxims that are ignored and the dominant flouting     often committed by characters in films is the objective of this study. Grice's Theory (1975) is used in this research. Here, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. With observation, data is collected. These actions consist of watching the movie "Animated Movie the Emperor's New Groove" and then observing discussions where the maxims are violated. The research results show that there are four types of maxims found in the film. The total data is 80 data points that violate. 36 (45%) maximum violation data Quantity, 11 (14%) maximum violation data Quality, 12 (15%) data on maximum relationship violations, 9 (11%) data on maximum method violations. From the results found by the researchers, the maxim most frequently violated is the Maxim of Quantity, which was violated 36 times (45%). Violating a maxim means that the speaker cannot adhere to the maxim correctly. Maxim violations occur because the speaker deliberately does not adhere to the maxim. The reasons for using maxims violations in films also vary, such as ignoring the interlocutor's statements, providing excessive information, trying to change the topic of conversation to make it irrelevant, and causing the interlocutor to think ambiguously about what the speaker means.

In the experimental class, the researcher used as a teaching media cake application while in the control class, the researcher used conventional methods in the learning process. The instrument of this study was a speaking test that we divided into pre-tests and post-tests. The data obtained from the test were analyzed using the SPSS20 program. The average pre-test score in the experimental class was 64,35, and the post-test score was 78,35. The average pre-test score in the control group was 65,2 and the post-test score 75,5. This shows that the average score in the experimental group was higher than the control group. The result was t-calculated > t -table with a significance level of p = 0.05 (3272 > 2192) The alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It also proved that English subject teachers apply the Cake Application as an alternative teaching medium to help the speaking ability of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 37 Medan.

Abstract

This study examines the Writing Ability of Introvert/Extrovert Students in Descriptive Text: Is Writing Easier for Introverts? Based on DiTiberio's statement (1989), the difference between extrovert and introvert individuals lies in the way of decision making, where extrovert individuals tend to be more objective and structured, while introvert individuals are more subjective and value personal values. The findings of the study indicate that students with introverted traits have better achievement in descriptive writing than extrovert students, with an average score of 74.27. This study emphasizes the importance of considering students' personal traits in determining the right teaching techniques to improve learning outcomes. The Writing Ability of Introvert/Extrovert Students in Descriptive Text becomes easier for introverts.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the drilling technique on the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMP Marisi. It employed a quantitative experimental design, involving an experimental class (VIII-1) that received vocabulary instruction using the drilling technique and a control class (VIII-2) that was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests and were then analyzed using statistical methods to assess the effectiveness of the drilling technique in enhancing students' vocabulary acquisition. The findings revealed a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students taught using the drilling technique and those who were not. Statistical analysis indicated that the experimental group's average pre-test score was 47.26, which increased to 65 in the post-test, reflecting an improvement of 17.73 points. In contrast, the control group's average score increased from 48 to 59.5, with a smaller gain of 11.5 points. The t-test analysis (t-count = 2.58, t-table = 2.021) confirmed that this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). This finding aligned with previous research that emphasized the role of structured repetition in vocabulary learning. The drilling technique effectively strengthened vocabulary retention and allowed students to apply new words in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research examines a critical issue in English language proficiency among tenth-grade students at SMKS Raksana 2 Medan, particularly those in the Automation and Office Governance (OTKP) program who demonstrate low vocabulary skills despite the school's emphasis on English competency for vocational purposes. The research addresses whether the Show and Tell (S&T) Method affects students' vocabulary skills, with the primary objective of determining this method's impact on vocabulary acquisition for grade X OTKP students. Employing an experimental approach, the study will compare vocabulary skills between students taught using Show and Tell versus traditional methods, assessing knowledge through pre- and post-tests focused on nouns related to office administration, equipment, and activities relevant to the OTKP curriculum. The anticipated results are expected to demonstrate significant improvement in vocabulary skills among students exposed to the Show and Tell Method, suggesting its effectiveness for enhancing vocabulary acquisition in a vocational school context. Based on the data analysis by using t-test, it was found that Tcount was 3.62 at 5% significant level, and the Ttable was 2.048 it means that Tcount > Ttable. It means that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. It means that The Show And Tell Method significantly affects vocabulary skills, at the 10th grade OTKP (Office Automation and Governance) SMKS Raksana 2 Medan.

The data of this study is taken from the comment’s netizen in CNN Twitter. In collecting the data, the researcher used the observation method. The finding of this research showed that 100 data fulfill all six types of presupposition, that is existential presupposition (17), lexical presupposition (36), factive presupposition (38), structural presupposition (10), counterfactual presupposition (15), and non-factive presupposition (20). The conclusion, this research highlights the importance of pragmatics analysis in understanding netizen comments on social media and their implications for media communication.

Abstract

By using the results from the ELSA Speak application, the pronunciation skills of second-year English majors at Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan were examined. The ELSA Speak Application was utilized to determine the kinds of pronunciation faults made by second-year students at the English Department of FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The ELSA Speak Application and documentation were used to collect data from students' pronunciation diagnoses. Twenty students were selected as the sample, with the population of the study consisting of the students in the English Department at FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan. The following are the conclusions: The majority of the sample found that they would "try again" and "almost correct”. Most of the ‘try again’ categories occurred when students pronounced words in which the sounds were not familiar in the student’s native language which is Bahasa Indonesia, such as /tʃ/. The other words with the ‘try again’ category are found when students pronounce words with subtle sounds and are called because the sound produced is close to a predictable sound so it can be concluded that every word can be understood such as /ŋ/, /v/. The other category of ‘almost correct’ is found in the lateral consonant /l/ and consonant cluster /ft/.
