Abstract

Among the various sources of ancient historical writing, inscriptions are in the top rank, because inscriptions were written at the same time as the events. Even so, not much can be revealed from the inscription and vice versa, the inscription cannot provide complete or comprehensive information about one aspect. Therefore, the use of inscriptions as historical sources must go through a procedure called interpretation.

Abstract

In fact, the development of archaeological research in Indonesia is not in line with the knowledge and perception of the wider community about that field of science. On the one hand, research shows a very rapid development, while on the other hand the community always considers that the archaeological study area is limited to areas and temples, or recently limited to skulls and fossils. This is due, among other things, to the limited scientific publications that can be enjoyed by the wider community, even if their distribution is very limited. Another reason, especially is the lack of public interest and attention to the field of archeology in particular and the field of culture in general, which is considered unable to directly provide material benefits.

Abstract

Research in archaeology has recently grown rapidly in line with the development of science and technology. This development is not only evident from the selection of sites, the application of theory and methodology, the use of methods and techniques, but also the selection and appearance of research subjects. Archaeology, which at the beginning of its development was only known as a hobby, is not surprising if the focus of attention was initially focused on objects that have artistic value. In subsequent developments observers are not only interested in objects that have artistic value, but also those that have no artistic value and even reach a level of attention to the complexities of relations between objects that can reflect various aspects of human life in the past.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aimed to describe quantitatively the development of students’ syntactical complexity during the Essay Writing Course measured with the L2SCA tool by Lu. The research basically implemented a descriptive-quantitative research design. The primary data were collected from 20 students majoring in Agribusiness and taking an essay writing course in Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMY) during one semester from February to July 2022 in a researcher class. They wrote three essays gradually from one session to the third session of the class. The essays were analyzed quantitatively using the L2SCA tool by following the indices of the tools as the reference to see the students’ syntactical complexity. In addition, the participants wrote three essays divided into three times writing tests. Overall, the analysis method was conducted by following a systematic procedure; classifying, scoring, displaying, describing, interpreting, discussing, and concluding. As a result, this study reveals that syntactical development of students’ essays during a semester session of writing course fluctuated from the first writing until the third writing. Although along the writing supervision, they had consultation sessions, the result did not show gradual and constant progress. It implied that the students’ acquisition of syntactical complexity represented in writing did not improve progressively in all syntactical indices. However, among the three essays the participants wrote, they excel most in second essay or argumentative essay. Further, it is necessary to relate the essay’s genre to the result of students’ writing for each of the essays has a special characteristic and level of difficulty.

Abstract

Metacognition is central to language learning because it encompasses the processes that govern the efficient use of learning strategies. It is especially important as a way to address language learners’ issues of limited repertoire of strategies and their application. While much research on language learning strategies  have been related to the learning of English, this study observes the increasingly appealing French as an additional language hence French as a Foreign Language (FFL) is gaining importance. This research was carried out by examining some similarities and differences in models of learning strategies of FLE students in three ASEAN countries.  The present study aims to investigate into FFL learners’ metacognitive strategies which contribute to the development of learners’ autonomy, despite the different contexts of study in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. This study is descriptive qualitative research involving 56 students from three universities in Bangkok (Thailand), Hanoi (Vietnam) and Yogyakarta (Indonesia) as an ad-hoc sample to study their French Language Education (FLE) learning strategies. Using a Metacognitive Strategy Questionnaire (MSQ), this study result in a few insights of FFL learning process. The participants showed a consistent metacognitive strategy in terms of planning, monitoring and evaluating. Even though they are located in different countries, these strategies are proved to contribute to their autonomy as an FFL learner with different specificities.

Abstract

Language politeness is part of an attitude that contains the value of politeness in everyday interactions. Politeness will always be reflected in the level of speech (language). This needs to get attention in learning French as an effort to help second language learners, so they can use it in communication. The object of this research is the form of speech used in communication via WhatsApp by students to lecturers according to the context of language politeness. Data collection was carried out using observation techniques, namely by reading carefully the utterances containing student language politeness contained in the lecturer's WA. Data analysis was carried out from the beginning, the researchers collected data using the model proposed by Ricoeur, namely with semantic, reflective, and existential understanding. The results showed that in representing politeness in language, students used various utterances such as (a) greetings, (b) apologies, (c) regrets, (d) introducing themselves before conveying their meaning. In addition, there are also speeches that reduce the politeness of students in speaking, such as: starting a conversation without using greetings and introducing themselves. Therefore, competence in matters relating to the socio-cultural of the French language must be mastered by the learner (students) in order to be able to use the learned French appropriately and politely. Keywords:  french, language, learners, politeness

Abstract

Thematic structure is an important concept in organizing ideas in academic writing. Although numerous studies have focused on investigating how it is realized in students' writing, only a few focus on investigating thematic structure in students' text across different proficiency levels. This article is based on a study analyzing idea organization and development in 24 high and low-scoring essays through Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It was a qualitative content analysis with complementary quantitative data. The results show significant differences in how ideas are organized and developed in high and low-scoring essays. Even though all types of Themes (topical, interpersonal, textual Theme) were observed in both groups, the high-scoring essays elaborated more themes than the low ones indicating that the high-scoring essays comprised more clauses. As for Thematic Progression, all the patterns were present in the essays. The Linear Theme pattern was primarily applied in high-scoring essays, while the Constant Theme pattern was applied frequently in the low-scoring ones. The Split Rheme pattern was less observed in all the students' essays. These findings indicate that the high achievers provided more expounded ideas through linear theme patterns, whereas their counterparts tended to focus on a subject reflected through Theme reiteration. Thus, this implies that proficiency characterized writers in organizing and developing ideas in writing as reflected through thematic Choice and Progression.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to find out Indonesian English as a Second/Foreign Language (L2) learners' attitudes towards cheating (AtC) in online English classes, as well as the possible influence of the combination of three variables, which are their AtC, absenteeism, and gender, on their L2 achievement as measured with their final grades. The study employed a survey method and was conducted by distributing an online questionnaire. In total, 164 Indonesian learners from various non-English departments at a university in Java participated in the study. Through descriptive statistics, it was found that generally learners reported their negative AtC in English class, suggesting disapproval towards cheating. Through multiple regression analysis, the study further found that the combination of learners AtC, absenteeism, and gender significantly influenced their L2 achievement, and the overall model could predict 34.5% of the total variance in L2 achievement. However, based on the beta coefficient of the three variables, only learners absenteeism and gender significantly affected their L2 achievement. As learners had higher absenteeism, they obtained lower L2 achievement. From a t-test analysis, female learners were found to have significantly better L2 achievement than their male counterparts. While the findings on the influence of absenteeism on L2 achievement generally conformed to literature in the field, the findings on the influence of AtC and gender on L2 achievement may suggest that further explorations may be necessary.
