Abstract

AbstractAssessment is an integral part of the learning and teaching process. Effective formative assessment is intended to improve students’ achievement and raise teacher’s quality. However, qualified formative assessment is rarely performed in a real classroom in this pandemic era. This paper describes how senior and vocational high school teachers conduct a formative assessment in this pandemic era. It focuses primarily on the type of task and activity offered, language skills and components covered, the fulfillment of good criteria of assessment, the development of students’ critical thinking, also the strengths and weaknesses of the assessment. The data collected by means of documents assessment created by the teachers. Data analysis was conducted by employing Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s theory. The results indicate the teachers conducted formative assessment mostly via Google Classroom and WhatsApp. In assessing speaking and reading, teachers provide various texts followed dominantly by multiple choices tests. In writing, students are assigned to share their feeling and opinion about a movie or current topic and write texts based on picture series. Teachers also employed form-focused grammar activities. It is evident that some tasks promote students’ critical thinking. However, some tasks are not well-constructed in terms of suitability with basic competence, time allotment, and the level of difficulties. Therefore, it is questionable whether the purpose to make changes to instruction can be achieved or not. Keywords: changes to instruction, formative assessment, Google Classroom, pandemic era

Abstract

The present study explores how Mimind app is implemented and what strengths and challenges this app brings to the writing class of the seventh-grade students of a secondary school in Kroya. This is an Action Research involving 16 seventh grade students. Documentation, observations, and interviews were used to gain the necessary data. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative analysis model from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The results indicate that: (1) The implementation of Mimind App in teaching learning activities was executed through the five stages of Scientific Approach and there were some activities such as giving picture, giving model text, giving individual work, group work, completing and developing a mind map, and creating a descriptive text. (2) Several strengths of using Mimind App as an online learning medium are: (a) an increase in motivation through the level of participation and activeness of students in online learning process, (b) the creation of an interesting and fun learning atmosphere for students, (c) and an increase in students writing performance, i.e., students’ writing ability. However, challenges deal with sufficient time management to explore the richly-provided features of the application.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to: (1) describe the development of speaking materials for grade eleven students based on contextual language teaching and learning, and (2) reveal the efficacy of the speaking teaching materials in improving students' speaking skills. This research belongs to educational Research and Development (R&D), which uses the simplified six-step approach of Borg and Gall (1983). The six steps are as follows, (1) Research and information collecting was conducted by performing document analysis, class observation, interview, product testing, as well as expert’s judgements, (2) planning and drafting, (3) Draft revision by experts, (4) field testing which was conducted in grade eleven students, (5) Revision, and (6) Final product. The data collection technique used in this research consists of (1) document analysis, (2) classroom observation, and (3) interviews. It was made for obtaining the data for the target situation analysis and appropriateness of the design of speaking materials for grade eleven. The findings show that (1) learning materials that were designed in this research fulfilled the criteria of the R&D model, which is based on the students' needs, lack, and want. This textbook is designed based on the students’ needs, lacks, and wants. Furthermore, the speaking materials, as the product of this study, provide additional learning resources for students. The purpose of the learning is to prepare the students to learn more about speaking because speaking skills are more useful for communication.

Abstract

This study is an evaluation research and aimed to accomplish two objectives: (1) to assess the extent to which the English textbooks utilized by seventh-grade teachers meet the criteria of a good textbook based on Mukundan and Nimehchisalem's standards, and (2) to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the two English textbooks used by seventh-grade teachers. The data were gathered through document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews. Subsequently, the data were analyzed and presented in a descriptive qualitative by utilizing Miles, Huberman, and Saldana's data analysis model (2014). The study focused on two textbooks, namely English for Nusantara and Bright: An English, which were evaluated using Mukundan and Nimehchisalem's checklist (2015). To ensure the validity of the evaluation results, two respondents served as inter-raters, they are an English teacher and a textbook reviewer. The findings of the study revealed various strengths and weaknesses in the two textbooks. English for Nusantara should take into consideration its layout, completeness of media, and clarity of instructions. Nonetheless, this textbook excels in terms of catering to students' backgrounds, providing a variety of activities, and offering guidance for both teachers and students. On the other hand, Bright: An English is commendable for its critical thinking tasks, inclusion of mini projects, and high-quality printing. Areas that require attention are the number and variety of activities included in the textbook, as well as the absence of a teacher's book. The evaluation results concluded that Bright: An English achieved a higher fulfillment score compared to English for Nusantara, with average scores of 3.18 and 2.92, respectively. In general, both textbooks are considered highly valuable and suitable for use as Kurikulum Merdeka's instructional materials.
