Abstract

Teaching or learning Reading in ESP context is not an easy task. It was proved, especially for the fourth semester students of Islamic banking in IAIN Bukittinggi that many problems found. The research was a descriptive qualitative. It was aimed to analyze problem in reading. The data was gotten through interview to the lecturer and questionnaire distributed to the student. The result of the research showed that reading problems in ESP context based on indicator were: The first, a few students had problems related to indicator Negative Expectations like problems in recalling information after reading. The second, some the students had problems with processing information. The third, a half students had problem about topic and genre, limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of familiarity with the subject matter, difficulty level of the text (readability), weak verbal reasoning. The last, most of the students got difficulty at lack of fluency point, use of language level, inadequate use of effective reading strategies. Abstract

Todays globalization has changed the lifestyle of Indonesian Muslim women, especially in college. Islamic values have been many abandoned by them. For example, we can see the ethics in dress and wear of hijab that has been far from Islamic sharia. As a speech says "Hijabi but naked". Many muslimah who use hijab but the beauty of body can still be seen by others. As if the use of hijab just follow the trend. The most feared thing is when the concept arises that the hijab is not an obligation for muslimah. To uncover this, as an educator, researchers feel obligated to bring back the muslimah students in accordance with the teachings of our prophet, Muhammad SAW. So this article designed the English materials about how to dress a muslimah based on Sunnah. This is development research, but focused on the design stage. The study resulted in the design of a valid English material after validated by the expert.

Abstract

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has been popular since 2016. Therefore, many preparations have already been done by all sectors to makeup this free market. Europe Economic Community has preceeded the famous of AEC. Thus, related to readiness, this article aimed at finding out the alertness that the third semester of Syariah Banking students of IAIN Bukittinggi have already prepared, especially their English ability to struggle with other country in ASEAN. The data of this research was gotten and analyzed quantitatively, by distributing questionnaire to the third semester of Syariah Banking students of IAIN Bukittinggi. The finding showed that the students had not been able to compete with other nations in ASEAN country since English did not become the important lesson for them and it was strengthen the curriculum of syariah banking does support students’ opportunity to learn English more. Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean (MEA) sudah booming dari awal tahun 2016 yang lalu. Sehingga sudah banyak persiapan yang dilakukan oleh semua sektor untuk menghadapi pasar bebas ini.  Ketenaran istilah ini sebelumnya telah didahului oleh pasar bebas di Eropa atau lebih dikenal  Masyarakat Ekonomi Eropa (MEE). Terkait dengan persiapan, maka tulisan bertujuan untuk melihat persiapan yang telah dilakukan oleh mahasiswa semester III Perbankan Syariah IAIN Bukittinggi, khususnya tentang kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dalam rangka kesiapan mahasiswa dalam bersaing dengan bangsa yang ada di ASEAN. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dan diolah secara kuantitatif, yaitu dengan menyebarkan angket kepada mahasiswa semester III Perbankan Syariah IAIN Bukittinggi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Perbankan Syariah belum mampu bersaing dengan bangsa lain yang tercakup dalam negara ASEAN.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out the effectiveness of repeated reading strategy toward students’ reading comprehension. This quantitative research done due to some problems found during reading class. First, the teacher used the conventional strategy since the teacher acted as the center of the class. Then, the students showed a little comprehension in reading, such as finding the main idea, reference, or inference of the text. Last but not least, the teacher admitted that the students often doubt about finding out the moral value of the text, because it was not written on the text. After doing treatment by implementing repeated reading strategy, researcher found that students’ reading comprehension was improved. It was showed that t-obtained was higher than t-table (6,872>2,064). Hence, there is a significant effect of repeated reading strategy toward student reading comprehension.

Abstract

Since English was declared as lingua franca and also because more foreign companies established in Indonesia, so mastering English is becoming one of the most important preparations for the Indonesian nation to face AEC (ASEAN Economic Community). This article aimed to explore about the importance of English for Moslem students in AEC preparation, Moslem students’ English competency for struggling AEC, and to see curriculum concern on fulfilling the need of Moslem students relate to AEC. This research was developed qualitatively. It was found that learning English is very crucial for Moslem students since AEC has started. However, their English competency has not been balanced with the need because IAIN Bukittinggi has just implemented English in two semesters only. It is not sufficient to meet the need of Islamic Economic human resources challenges AEC Semenjak bahasa Inggris dideklarasikan menjadi bahasa pengantar atau bahasa Lingua Franca  dalam perdagangan bebas ASEAN,  juga karena semakin banyaknya perusahaan asing berdiri di Indonesia setelah diberlakukannya  pasar bebas, menyebabkan menguasai bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu persiapan penting bagi bangsa Indonesia untuk menghadapi MEA (Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean). Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengupas tentang pentingnya bahasa Inggris dalam persiapan menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean. Tulisan ini juga bertujuan untuk melihat kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Islam terkhusus di IAIN Bukittinggi serta ingin mengetahui apakah kurikulum yang diterapkan di IAIN Bukittinggi sudah memenuhi kebutuhan mahasiswa terkait persiapan mereka menyambut MEA. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahasa Inggris sangat penting bagi mahasiswa Muslim dalam menghadapi MEA. Namun kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka belum untuk memenuhi tantangan MEA, hal ini disebabkan karena bahasa Inggris hanya dipelajari dalam dua semester selama perkuliahan Strata 1.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to discover whether the lesson plan composed by the MTI Pasia English teacher match or even mismatch based on curriculum 2013. Since the limited time during covid-19 pandemic, the teacher had issues establishing the device used to assess and the appropriate rubric by way of the indicator, as well as the construction of the standard of competency and basic competency, and also in selecting effective methods to be appropriate with the indicators.Another problem since teacher did not use media or other learning tools in the class. So, it made the class monotonous and boring. No visualization could make students less enthusiastic in the learning process.This research used descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted at MTI Pasia. The instruments were observation sheet and documention.The result showed 3 (three) conditions were match (Identity of Lesson Plan, the objectives of study and method of study), 3 (three) of them were less match (Score competence, basic competence and Indicator of competence achievement and the material of study) and the rest three condition were mismatch (Media, tools, and sources of study, the steps of teaching or teaching activity and Assessments) related to teacher’s lesson plan component.

Abstract

Intensive English Course (IC) has been considered an essential program to prepare qualified English Department students in higher education in the first semester. The lecturers teach this program for the four skills and two components; listening, reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary and grammar in an integrated manner for one semester. This course will be a success if the lecturers have the capability in content and pedagogy to teach the IC program. Furthermore, this study aimed at describing lecturers’ quality performance in teaching IC at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek (SMDD) Bukittinggi. The data was collected by distributing a questionnaire to 95 first-semester English department students in the 2022/2023 academic year. The findings showed the lecturers’ average was 58,83. It means that the lecturers were qualified in teaching Intensive English Courses in all indicators; tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy.

Abstract

Collaborative learning remains to be a range that is progressively getting consideration in academic fields.  As it has many advantages to individual student learning. One of collaborative learning methods is small group discussion. Furthermore, this study was aimed at describing the result of students’ evaluation of the learning experiences in a small group discussion in the third semester of English education students in UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek (SMDD) Bukittinggi based on the Students Experience Questionnaire (SEQ). This study is categorized as a quantitative study. This descriptive quantitative research collected data by distributing a questionnaire to the third-semester students. The issues addressed are students’ learning experiences in doing a small group discussion. Based on the data analysis, the result showed that the third-semester students had a good learning experience in all aspects; in the good teaching scale, understanding of learning, assessment, appropriate workload, the skills of affective and psychomotor, motivation, and satisfaction with the module used during the learning process through the small group discussion. However, the teachers still need to improve their ability in managing small group discussions.

Abstract

Background of this study were based on the problems that occured in several students at Mattayom 5 Darunsat Withaya. They were several students did not speak naturally. Then, they were rare to practice their English speaking at school. Also, they did not use the body language when speaking English in front of the class. In addition, they were also doing eye contact with their friends. Of course, they were lack of confidence, lack of vocabulary mastery. Regarding to the problems above, it can be understood that they faced the difficulties in speaking English. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the causes of difficulties in mastering English speaking at Mattayom 5 Darunsat Withaya Islamic School. Furthermore, this type of study was quantitative descriptive. The data was collected through questionnaire. The total population used is more than 140 students. Because there were 100 students who have problems speaking English. Unfortunately, only 70 students filled out the questionnaire during data collection so that the sample of this study amounted to 70 students. Moreover, there were 2 causes why the students were difficult in speaking English. They were linguistic factor such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation and psycholinguistic factor such as anxiety and shyness. In this result, vocabulary was dominant causes for students in speaking English. It can be seen that the highest of vocabulary factor was lack of vocabulary. It was 57% that they had lack of vocabulary.
