<![CDATA[The purpose of this research is to solve the students’ problem in studying speaking English in classroom. It was found that the students have lack of ability in speaking English in the classroom. The problems were assumed derive from uninteresting techniques and monotonous activities done by the teacher when teaching and learning process was going on. To solve the problems above the teacher taught the students speaking through simulation. Because by using simulation the teacher could create various activities that given to the students. It could attract the students’ attention and interest when studying in the classroom and increase students’ speaking ability. This research was action research. The participants of this research were all of the students in Informatika Komputer B (IK.B) at Dynasty Computer Solok. The instruments to collect data were speaking test through interview and field note. Based on those instruments, it was found that studying speaking through simulation could increase students’ speaking ability. Shortly, the students’ speaking ability increased when they studied by using simulation]]>

<![CDATA[This research is aimed to describe the way English teachers of SMA 4 Solok implement genre based approach in teachingwriting. This research also investigates the problems found by the English teachers in implementing it and examines how theyovercome those problems. The findings of this research show that the teachers have not implemented genre based approach inteaching writing optimally. Lack of comprehension about the basic principles of genre based approach has been the main cause. Theteachers experienced in familiarizing grammar and vocabulary to the students. It is hard for them to find appropriate materialswhich are close to their life. This study was descriptive qualitative research which was conducted in SMA 4 Solok.]]>

<![CDATA[Todays globalization has changed the lifestyle of Indonesian Muslim women, especially in college. Islamic values have been many abandoned by them. For example, we can see the ethics in dress and wear of hijab that has been far from Islamic sharia. As a speech says "Hijabi but naked". Many muslimah who use hijab but the beauty of body can still be seen by others. As if the use of hijab just follow the trend. The most feared thing is when the concept arises that the hijab is not an obligation for muslimah. To uncover this, as an educator, researchers feel obligated to bring back the muslimah students in accordance with the teachings of our prophet, Muhammad SAW. So this article designed the English materials about how to dress a muslimah based on Sunnah. This is development research, but focused on the design stage. The study resulted in the design of a valid English material after validated by the expert.]]>

<![CDATA[ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has been popular since 2016. Therefore, many preparations have already been done by all sectors to makeup this free market. Europe Economic Community has preceeded the famous of AEC. Thus, related to readiness, this article aimed at finding out the alertness that the third semester of Syariah Banking students of IAIN Bukittinggi have already prepared, especially their English ability to struggle with other country in ASEAN. The data of this research was gotten and analyzed quantitatively, by distributing questionnaire to the third semester of Syariah Banking students of IAIN Bukittinggi. The finding showed that the students had not been able to compete with other nations in ASEAN country since English did not become the important lesson for them and it was strengthen the curriculum of syariah banking does support students’ opportunity to learn English more. Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean (MEA) sudah booming dari awal tahun 2016 yang lalu. Sehingga sudah banyak persiapan yang dilakukan oleh semua sektor untuk menghadapi pasar bebas ini. Ketenaran istilah ini sebelumnya telah didahului oleh pasar bebas di Eropa atau lebih dikenal Masyarakat Ekonomi Eropa (MEE). Terkait dengan persiapan, maka tulisan bertujuan untuk melihat persiapan yang telah dilakukan oleh mahasiswa semester III Perbankan Syariah IAIN Bukittinggi, khususnya tentang kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dalam rangka kesiapan mahasiswa dalam bersaing dengan bangsa yang ada di ASEAN. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dan diolah secara kuantitatif, yaitu dengan menyebarkan angket kepada mahasiswa semester III Perbankan Syariah IAIN Bukittinggi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Perbankan Syariah belum mampu bersaing dengan bangsa lain yang tercakup dalam negara ASEAN.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is aimed at developing life skill based English instructional material in bilingual pesantren by using 4D Model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). To achieve this aim, this study was conducted using the Research Development (R d) method. As parts of this method, a series of data collecting techniques involving pre-experimental teaching, interviews, observations, and tests of effectiveness, practicality and validity, were carried out to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The participants of this study were one English language teacher and students of Class XI Timur Tengah, Insan Cendikia Boarding School (ICBS) Payakumbuh. The findings of this research reveal that the life skill based instructional material is valid and practical. Consequently, the life skill-based materials development can positively give the effective result as the innovation in English instructional material]]>

<![CDATA[This article is written based on a research that has been conducted. This research aimed to analyze the character values found in the textbook used in the 8th grade of the Junior high School "When English Rings a Bell". This research applied the content analysis method with a qualitative approach. Researcher used document, namely a textbook as research instrument. There were six steps in analyzing data: unitizing, sampling, recording / coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The results of the analysis showed that in general the eighteen character values were used in the book. However, the character values were still not evenly distributed. Character value that often appear was communicative value, while the character value that appear the least was religious value.]]>

<![CDATA[This research is an quantitative research. The population of this research was the second grade of SMAN 3 Bukittinggi. in this research, the researcher used the purposive sampling technique in determining the sample. There were two classes as the sample of this research. In the experimental class the students were taught by using Extensive Reading Approach. While, in control class the students were taught by using traditional technique and both of classes were given post test at the end of meeting. In order to analyze the data, the researcher used the normality test by using Liliefors test and tested the homogeneity of the data by using F test. The researcher also used the t-test formula to test the hypothesis and consulted its result with the ttable with α = 0.05.]]>

<![CDATA[This research was discover the effect of using Discrete-point task towards students’ writing ability. Most of student got difficulties to organize the generic structure of text. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi- experimental design by using the pre-test pos-test control group deisgn. The population of this research was tenth grade of in SMK Cendana Padang Panjang. The sample was X TKJ.1 which was treated as experimental class and taught by using Discrete-point task and X TKJ.2. The researcher used total sampling technique because the population less than a hundred. From the result of the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental class, it was found that the t-obtained (8.25) was higher than the t-table (1.960). Then, the calculation of post-test both classes: experimental and control classes was obtained the (3.557) was bigger than t table (1.67). For the third hypothsis, mean score of the experimental class is bigger than control class (77.44 68.5).]]>

<![CDATA[In this study researcher found some problems that faced by students of grade X in MAS TI Koto Tinggi. The problems were: first, Students did not understand the meaning of vocabulary in the reading text. Secondly, Students seemed to have lack of willingness and interest in learning English. Thirdly, Students’ ability in English was still average especially in vocabulary and grammar. The study aimed: (1) To find out whether there is a significant effect of using extensive reading towards students’ vocabulary mastery, (2) To find out whether there is a significant difference of students who are using extensive reading and students who are not using extensive reading, (3) To know whether students’ reading taught by using extensive reading is better than students who are not taught by it. The class research was consisted of two classes and the students are 24 students. the first was experiment class with 12 students and the second was control class with 12 students. The researcher did pre-test in both class, then the researcher gave treatment in experiment class by using extensive reading method then did post-test in both class to know the result. Data that has been collected was processed by using SPSS. 20 The results showed that most of the average score of pre-test in experiment class 55.67. The average score of post-test in experiment class was 81. That was mean that the class category of student’s vocabulary mastery in reading skill after did treatment by using extensive method was increase. The average score of pre -test in control class was 58.67, then the average of post-test in control class was 66.67. it’s mean that the class category of student’s vocabulary mastery in reading skill after taught by using conventional method was increase in score, but the category was still in fair category.]]>

<![CDATA[Since English was declared as lingua franca and also because more foreign companies established in Indonesia, so mastering English is becoming one of the most important preparations for the Indonesian nation to face AEC (ASEAN Economic Community). This article aimed to explore about the importance of English for Moslem students in AEC preparation, Moslem students’ English competency for struggling AEC, and to see curriculum concern on fulfilling the need of Moslem students relate to AEC. This research was developed qualitatively. It was found that learning English is very crucial for Moslem students since AEC has started. However, their English competency has not been balanced with the need because IAIN Bukittinggi has just implemented English in two semesters only. It is not sufficient to meet the need of Islamic Economic human resources challenges AEC Semenjak bahasa Inggris dideklarasikan menjadi bahasa pengantar atau bahasa Lingua Franca dalam perdagangan bebas ASEAN, juga karena semakin banyaknya perusahaan asing berdiri di Indonesia setelah diberlakukannya pasar bebas, menyebabkan menguasai bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu persiapan penting bagi bangsa Indonesia untuk menghadapi MEA (Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean). Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengupas tentang pentingnya bahasa Inggris dalam persiapan menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean. Tulisan ini juga bertujuan untuk melihat kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Islam terkhusus di IAIN Bukittinggi serta ingin mengetahui apakah kurikulum yang diterapkan di IAIN Bukittinggi sudah memenuhi kebutuhan mahasiswa terkait persiapan mereka menyambut MEA. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahasa Inggris sangat penting bagi mahasiswa Muslim dalam menghadapi MEA. Namun kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka belum untuk memenuhi tantangan MEA, hal ini disebabkan karena bahasa Inggris hanya dipelajari dalam dua semester selama perkuliahan Strata 1.]]>
