Abstract

Abstract

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes/vape) are currently millennials' most popular tobacco or nicotine product. One of the liquid content in e-cigarettes, such as nicotine, is known to stimulate the secretion of catecholamines which can cause an increase in lipolysis in the liver. As a result, free fatty acids in the liver increase, triggering an increase in hepatic triglyceride secretion into the blood vessels. This study aimed to determine the difference in triglyceride levels in millennial vapers and non-smokers. This study uses a descriptive-analytical method with a cross-sectional approach which aims to describe or describe a situation objectively, then described. The results show that the average triglyceride level in millennial vapers is 136.5 mg/dL. While in non-smokers, 91.9 mg/dL. The Mann-Whitney test results obtained a significance value of 0.042 (p < 0.05), so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the results of the triglyceride level examination in millennial vapers and non-smokers.

Abstract

The health laboratory is one of the health services for the community in helping to establish a diagnosis, monitoring treatment results, and determining the prognosis of a disease. Control serum is very important for assessing performance in the laboratory, including instrument and reagent quality. Some laboratories use pooled serum as control serum for daily examination. Albumin is the most abundant plasma protein in the human body, which is about 55-60% and the total normal serum protein level is 3.8-5.0%. This study aims to test the stability of pooled sera on examination of albumin stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2 - 8ºC for 2 weeks. This research method uses observational research methods with precision data analysis techniques (accuracy). The results of the study of examining albumin levels using the Bromcresol Green (BCG) method obtained serum stability results on day 1 to day 5, where the CV value from the albumin level examination entered the maximum CV value on albumin, which was 6. The CV value for the 5th day covers, day 1 to day 2 = 1.99. Day 1 to day 3 = 2.17. Day 1 to day 4 = 4.27. And day 1 to day 5 = 4.84. On day 6 to day 14 and so on, the serum is found to be unstable and the value does not enter the maximum CV value.

Abstract

Background: Children living near artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) areas are at risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, particularly mercury, which is known to be nephrotoxic. This study aimed to describe urea and creatinine levels as indicators of kidney function in children residing in ASGM areas. Method: The study employed a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 49 students from grades IV–VI of Rangan Tate Public Elementary School, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires, urea measurement using the Berthelot method, and creatinine measurement using the kinetic Jaffe method. Both methods are simple, fast, and inexpensive, although they require automated instruments for better precision. Data were analyzed descriptively and with Spearman correlation tests using SPSS version 30 (p<0.05). Result: The results showed that all respondents’ urea levels were within the normal range (11–39 mg/dL) with a mean of 28.3 mg/dL. In contrast, 69.4% of respondents had creatinine levels above the reference range (0.3–0.7 mg/dL), with a mean of 0.79 mg/dL. A significant correlation was found between children’s involvement in mining activities and creatinine levels (r=0.406; p=0.004), while no significant associations were observed between other variables and either urea or creatinine levels. A total of 8% of children were reported to participate in gold mining activities, and 20.4% lived within a radius of less than 1 km from mining sites. Conclusion: The increase in creatinine levels among most children living near ASGM areas indicates a potential risk of impaired kidney function. Further monitoring using more sensitive and accurate biomarkers is recommended for early detection of nephrotoxic effects.
