Abstract

Abstract: Sungai Bawang Cultural Village organizes weekly Dayak Kenyah Tribe traditional dance performances. Many people, especially in East Kalimantan, only know the Pampang Cultural Village. Therefore, social media videos based on folklore must be optimized for promotional purposes. By altering and uploading videos to social media, the community, particularly members of the Pokdarwis of Sungai Bawang Cultural Village, have the capacity to promote their cultural performances independently. Thus, many people are able to learn about the Sungai Bawang Tourism Village performances. Experiments, lectures, discussions, and demonstrations are the methods applied. The method is carried out in three stages: (1) Downloading the Filmora application, (2) Providing an introduction to the section allocated for the Filmora application, and (3) Creating videos using Filmora. Sungai Bawang Cultural Village community members and Pokdarwis grew an interest in the project and successfully completed the video editing procedure through the use of the Filmora Application. This process also increases public consciousness regarding the significance of social media in promoting the performance video of Sungai Bawang Cultural Village to a broad audience. Abstract

This research is concerned with the deconstruction of Mrs. Driver’s character in Mary Norton’s The Borrowers novel. This research aimed to describe the meaning of her character and deconstruct her previous fixed view using the determined binary oppositions. This research used Derrida’s deconstruction with a qualitative design in the form of a description. The data in this research were dialogues, text, narration, sentences related to Mrs. Driver's character and obtained by reading the novel several times. In the analysis, the depiction of Mrs. Driver’s character and characterization in the novel is described using Robert's theory which is the action of characters reveal their qualities, what characters say reveals what they are like, what others say tells us about a character and the author, speaking as a storyteller or an observer may present judgments about characters. Then, her character is deconstructed using the determined binary oppositions, they are: offensive vs. defensive, bad person vs. good person, and powerful vs. powerless. The researcher deconstructed Mrs. Driver's character and discovered her previously fixed views as someone offensive, bad, and powerful are not absolute. The researcher concluded that Mrs. Driver's character inherited not just a bad meaning but also a good trait. Thus, the meaning of her character is undecidable. This research emphasized that literary works never have a fixed meaning, so the reader should not be chained by only one perspective.

Abstract

This research focuses on an anti-whitewashing movement in films and how it connects with the shifting portrayals and stereotypes of Asians in films. The period addressed in this study is from 1995 to 2021. The researcher begins by recognizing whitewashing issues and concerns in casting Asian actors and identifying stereotypical images of Asians portrayed in two films: the original version of Mortal Kombat, which was released in 1995, and the contemporary remake of the film, which was released in 2021. This research used content analysis to compare the portrayals and stereotypes of Asians in both films. The data indicate that racist images of Asians seen in Mortal Combat 1995 have been removed in Mortal Combat 2021.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian cultural identity is represented and rendered in two children’s narratives, Hari Istimewa Suwidak Loro and Mau Masak Apa, Lintang?, through the identification of culture-specific lexical items and the translation strategies applied, based on Newmark’s (1988) framework. The findings indicate that material culture—particularly culinary references such as botok, klepon, and serabi—is the most prevalent category, followed by social culture, which includes kinship terms and communal practices. These categories reflect the translators’ emphasis on tangible and relational aspects of Indonesian life, suggesting that food and familial terms serve as culturally resonant vehicles for transmitting values and traditions to young readers. Six translation strategies were identified, with functional and cultural equivalence being the most frequently employed, indicating a prioritization of accessibility. Meanwhile, transference and amplification were used to preserve cultural specificity. These findings underscore the role of translation in mediating cultural representation and enhancing cross-cultural understanding through children’s literature.
