Abstract

This study delves into the correlation between critical thinking and input ability skills within the framework of debate. While debate often highlights spontaneous and responsive skills, the overlooked essential is the input ability, encompassing tasks like confirming information, summarizing, and catching details. These skills precede output ability and are crucial in effective debating. Drawing from sources spanning the past decade, this qualitative research employs the narrative inquiry method to explore the role of critical thinking in language input ability. Data collection involves questionnaires targeting students with debate experience, focusing on the impact of input and output skills on their debating. Utilizing interviews, the research reveals that a balance between input and output abilities is vital for successful debate performance. The result is participants have different points of view in choosing whether input or output which affects their critical thinking mostly, the strategies they used, the importance of output and input abilities, and emotional intelligence, it shows the need for strategies to enhance input abilities alongside output skills to gain maximum potential in debate. Future research aims to develop methods for fostering balanced improvement in input abilities, shifting from a sole focus on output proficiency.

Abstract

Research related to speech acts in speeches is frequently conducted, particularly in the context of speeches delivered by political and prominent figures. However, speeches by international exchange program students receive less attention despite their potential impact to influence audiences. Moreover, this study investigates the types of illocutionary speech acts employed by 20 undergraduate participants who were part of the 2021 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI). The theme of the analyzed speeches is "This I Believe." A descriptive-qualitative method was employed, with data collected through audio and video recordings, transcribed, and analyzed using Searle’s speech act theory. Based on the findings, it was discovered that the exchange students' speeches, which employed illocutionary speech actions including assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive, function to represent their cultural background and life experiences. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that SUSI participants predominantly relied on assertive illocutionary acts to articulate their personal beliefs and values in their "This I Believe" speeches. This analysis highlights the importance of understanding the types of speech acts in different contexts, as they reveal the underlying intentions and strategies of the speakers in conveying their messages.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the strengths and limitations of English language textbooks as identified in a range of scholarly publications focused on content analysis of instructional materials. Numerous textbooks—whether produced by governmental or independent publishers—have been evaluated through various theoretical lenses, with Brian Tomlinson’s comprehensive framework being one of the most frequently employed. Utilizing a systematic literature review, this research critically explores the pedagogical merits and shortcomings embedded within English textbooks or coursebooks as documented across the selected studies. A total of eight peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2025 were analyzed using Tomlinson’s evaluative criteria. The objective of this research is to determine wether Tomlinson’s Theory is effective to develop a good textbook. The findings indicate that while the majority of textbooks demonstrated strong alignment with Tomlinson’s principles. The comprehensive analysis of the findings categorized as "not specified" in the reviewed articles highlights the importance of further investigation and targeted refinement in the development of language education materials. These ambiguous or inconclusive results underscore the need for continued research and systematic evaluation to enhance the clarity, effectiveness, and inclusivity of English language learning resources, ultimately contributing to more equitable and learner-centered educational practices.
