Abstract

This study analyzes the defense mechanisms undergone by Hugh Glass in Michael Punke’s The Revenant: a novel of revenge. Glass conducts a defense mechanism because he wants to reduce his anxiety after being left by his friends in the woods and fighting against a mother bear alone. His action of doing defense mechanisms is psychologically explainable and is also undergone by people in real life, which then becomes the reason the researcher gets interested in analyzing defense mechanisms. Using five types of anxiety by Sigmund Freud, the study shows that Glass conducts defense mechanisms: intellectualization, rationalization, reaction formation, repression, and sublimation. By intellectualization, Glass gets rid of anger, by displacement, Glass gets his target for nutrition, by rationalization, Glass gets reality, by reaction formation, Glass takes everything for granted, by repression, he does anything else more useful, by sublimation, Glass does good things instead of taking revenge. By this study, then, the researcher hopes so much that it contributes to the development of the literary study, especially in the study of the psychology of literature.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to explore exploitation in James Mcbride’s the Good Lord Bird undergone mostly by the colored people because they are dominated by the white. Using descriptive and dramatic method to analyze as well as discuss the speech and action of the characters, the study finds that the colored people are exploited through two ways, man by man exploitation and labor exploitation. Man by man exploitation refers to enslaving, taking bribes, killing, and threatening, whilst, labor exploitation refers to selling by the owner and working for the owner. Thus, exploitation is an inhumane conduct since human should be respectable as they are created the same only those with great fear of the God.

Abstract

This study was to analyze the character growth of a unique character of Lira in Alexandra Christo’s To Kill a Kingdom. It is regarded as a unique character as Lira is not just character. She undergoes a transformation from a rude animal to good human being. Not like the change of character of a man whose changes only from bad to good character without anatomic change, Lira has to face problems to become a good person. Using close reading, the researcher is able to explore deeply the character of Lira before changing and after changing into a human with the result that after taking pains to overcome the problems, Lira is able to change her personality from bad ones: bloodthirsty and obedient (to bad things) to good ones: merciful, disobedient (to bad things), selfless, and noble person. Though the six determinants of Hurlock play important role for the character change, however, the researcher highlights that the more important ones are within somebody himself/herself. Therefore, the six determinants of Hurlock need attention to be more paid because the person plays a role in the world. Thus, the world is a stage within which there are many roles played so that people should be careful to play their roles in this stage.

Abstract

This study is about a social class that plays a very important role in the life and death of the main character in Thomas Hardy’s the Mayor of Casterbridge. It is called to have an important role as it triggers the character to survive though eventually; he must die for it. Using the capitalist mode of production and descriptive and dramatic approach to picture the social class in the society as well as the effect of it, the study shows that the main character’s life is triggered by the social class in the society, that is, wealth possession. The more property a man gets the more respects he gets from the society. On the contrary, the less property he gets the less respects he gets. It, then, becomes the main issue of the people in the novel to behave according to the social class driving the main character to the downfall. Finally, although the study has the novelty since no previous studies use the same theory as the researcher’s study, the study gives the readers moral lesson that sometimes in a society, wealth is worth more whilst in another society is not. Besides, this novelty is to develop the study of literature.
