Abstract

This study analyzes defense mechanism undergone by Hughie Warriner in Dead Calm. Warriner conducts defense mechanism because he wants to reduce his anxiety after accidental incident of sinking a yacht and the killing of his friend. His action of doing defense mechanism is psychologically explainable that is also undergone by people in real life which then becomes the reason the researchers get interested in analyzing defense mechanism. Besides, this kind of mechanisms are close in human life that man is born with anxiety through which he conducts defense mechanisms unconsciously. Using three types of anxiety by Sigmund Freud, the study shows that Warriner conducts defense mechanisms: denial, displacement, and sublimation. By denial, he denies sinking the yacht and killing his friend, by displacement, he blames other object by shouting at it, and by sublimation, he puts the investigators under the yacht. Thus, the three types of defense mechanism are worthy of research since people can reduce their anxiety properly. By this study then, the researchers hope so much that it contributes to the development of the literary study especially in the study of psychology of literature.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the Oedipus complex of Eben’s in Eugene O’Neil’s play entitled Desire Under the Elms. To analyze it, the writers use the psychological approach, especially Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. The writers got the main source of the data from the play, while the supporting data, the writers got from literary books, journals of English Literature, and the internet. Data were gathered then they were examined using the descriptive-analytic techniques. The focus of the study was divided into three discussions, namely the factors behind the reasons why Eben had the Oedipus complex, what made him have a rivalry with his own father, and had a forbidden relationship with his stepmother, Abbie. The forbidden relationship between Eben and Abbie is the manifestation of Eben’s Oedipus complex and his way to break his father’s deep heart as his revenge for his mother’s death. The study found out that Eben’s Oedipus complex was influenced more by Eben’s id than his ego and superego.

Abstract

There are lots of researches conducting study on Angie Thomas’ the Hate U Give that triggers the researcher to do the study on the same novel. Most of the previous researchers refer to racism as the issue of their study, yet, the researcher comes to the result of the racism indeed with different theory. Using Gramsci’s hegemony theory and close reading method together with dramatic and descriptive approach, the study finds that the unfair judgement by the majority people (the result of racism) brings misery to the minority one, the black community. The unfair judgement refers to the full control of the black organization, the Black Panthers, physical harm, and inhuman treatment. The effects of the unfair judgement refers to the oppression of the black people and the betrayal of the black person.

Abstract

Bilingual experience is the experience of language users when they actively use two languages in their daily activities. The construction of this experience is shaped by the environment and context that encourage and require to use English as a second language (L2). The subjects in this study were 24 students from the class of 2022 in the International Relations Study Program at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) Surabaya. This research used a mixed methods approach with an explanatory design that utilized qualitative methods to deepen the analysis of data obtained through quantitative methods. To measure bilingual experience, a questionnaire was used containing four indicators: the use of English as a second language (L2) on campus, the use of English as a second language (L2) in social and family settings, media and learning resources to improve English proficiency, and strategies for using English as a second language (L2). These indicators also served as a reference in developing the interview guide. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics techniques with the help of SPSS 21 software, further enhanced by interview results. The results of the correlation test narrowed down to two groups. The first group is the bilingual experience variable group with "moderate" and "low" values. In this case, there were 7 correlation results between variables with "moderate" values and 11 correlation results between variables with "low" values. The second group is the variable group with "very low" correlation values. The correlation test results showed 37 correlation results between variables with "very low" values. The correlation test between the use of English as a second language (L2) outside of class hours and the use of code-switching and code-mixing was the variable with the highest correlation coefficient compared to the other variables.

Abstract

There are a lot of studies about characters, most of which are about characters dealing with the good and bad characters as the result of the study. This study challenges the previous studies above that study on characters not merely deal with and bad but deal with survival through the characters. In Thomas Hardy’s the Mayor of Casterbridge, I study about women’s simple character for the downfall of the Mayor of Casterbriidge. Using New Criticism focusing on the characterization as well as close reading as a method, this study shows the result that the four women: Susan Henchard, Lucetta, Elizabeth Jane, and the furmity woman are above the greatness of the Mayor of Casterbridge through their simple character; Susan Henchard by her simple and natural act for the sake of her daughter future, Lucetta by her simple act to marry another man for fear of the terrible marriage with the Mayor of Casterbridge, Elizabeth Jane with her simple character to ignore the Mayor of Casterbridge for tricking her real father, and the furmity woman with her simple testimony of the terrible wife sale by the Mayor of Casterbridge. All women’s simple characters put the Mayor of Casterbridge in complete downfall in love and in business. In conclusion, though being a great man in the Casterbridge, Michael Henchard undergoes a complete downfall by the simplicity of the characters of the women. Finally, simple character is worth studying to prevent people to be arrogant.

Abstract

This study is comparing women’s betrayal in two novels, Wild Swans a novel by Jung Chang and the Patience Stone a novel by Atiq Rahimi. The fact that Chinese’ women and Afghan women’s share the common issue, that is patriarchal one, the former faces the superior communist party, whilst, the latter faces the Mullah, the influential spiritual leader. Then, the women’s betrayal is worthy of analysis. The word ‘betrayal’ turns out to have a positive connotation instead of a negative one as heard in everyday life. Using descriptive and dramatic method, the study finds that both women in both novels have similarities and differences in their betrayal seen from the way they speak as well as act. In the similarities, both women betray the powerful people and their husbands, whilst, the differences are that people in power refer to the political parties in Wild Swans, a novel by Jung Chang, to the Mullah, a religious leader in the Patience Stone, a novel by Atiq Rahimi besides the husband is loyal to the political party in Wild Swans and to the religious teaching in the Patience Stone. Eventually, comparing women’s betrayal is worth a study since their betrayal gives a new life concept that women should play important roles in society not just men.

Abstract

This study conducts a comparison of two characters that bring the main characters into a terrible fate, the curse, in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Horace Walpole’s the Castle of Otranto. Using New Criticism theory, Miner’s comparative literature and close reading method, the study shows that though both characters in the novels are categorized as brutal leaders, however, Okonkwo is more brutal than Manfred shown in the diagram which has five kinds of crime than Manfred, only one crime. The former heartlessly takes the head of the enemy home and drinks the blood and kills the innocent kid and his family because they are weak people as well as regret for the society change instead of killing the kids and the family, whilst Manfred only kills somebody else and regret for his daughter as the off target. Accordingly, Okonkwo gets the curse more sorrowful by killing himself than Manfred who only mourns for his murdered daughter. The study then is worth a conduct as it has a novelty of the excluded theory in the previous studies and gives the researcher moral lesson that character can determine our future life.
