Abstract

Critical congenital heart disease (CHD) requires immediate diagnosis and intervention, but its asymptomatic nature in early life presents a significant challenge for detection. This study aimed to determine the suitability of a common fingertip pulse oximeter as a low-cost screening tool compared to the standard neonatal pulse oximeter for the early detection of critical CHD. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 newborn subjects at a health center in Kediri. The results indicated that while the neonatal pulse oximeter measured pulse frequency and saturation more quickly, there was no statistically significant difference in the preductal (p=0.053) and postductal (p=0.099) oxygen saturation values recorded by the two devices. However, despite a weak positive correlation, a Bland-Altman analysis revealed poor agreement and reliability between the two instruments, with an average bias of 0.93% (95% CI: -7.38 to 9.24) for preductal and 0.74% (95% CI: -8.49 to 9.24) for postductal measurements. In conclusion, although no subjects were diagnosed with critical CHD, the findings suggest that the fingertip pulse oximeter is not a sufficiently reliable substitute for neonatal pulse oximetry in screening for this condition due to the poor agreement between the two methods.

Abstract

Pneumonia is an illness that frequently affects young children and significantly influences their health and overall life quality, particularly in toddlers. This research seeks to explore how parental awareness and actions relate to the seriousness of pneumonia among toddlers at the Lingsar and Sigerongan Community Health Centers. This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional research design using consecutive sampling. The study was conducted in the working area of the Lingsar and Sigerongan Community Health Centers, West Lombok with a research sample of 112 respondents. The information collected was examined using the Spearman's rho test. The findings indicated that a majority of the parents of toddlers were aged between 20 and 35 years (83.9%), were predominantly female (51.5%), had low levels of education (51.8%), and the majority worked as housewives (74.1%). The data also showed that there was a high level of knowledge (80.4%) and positive behavior (96.4%). The analysis of the knowledge and behavior data through the Spearman's rho test yielded results of (p = 0.807) and (p = 0.292), indicating no significant correlation between parental knowledge and behavior with the severity of pneumonia in toddlers (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there was no significant link found between the history of basic vaccinations, nutritional status, family smoking background, exclusive breastfeeding history, low birth weight history, prematurity, and environmental factors with the severity of pneumonia in toddlers. There was no association between parental knowledge and behavior and the severity of pneumonia in toddlers at the Lingsar and Sigerongan Health Centers in West Lombok.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health issue in Indonesia, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life. Parenting practices in the digital era present both opportunities and challenges in ensuring optimal child growth and development. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation and outcomes of Pondok Gizi Bunda Mengajar, an integrated parenting program focused on digital-era child rearing to support stunting prevention in Yogyakarta City. The program was conducted in three stunting focus areas involving 76 participants (69 mothers of under-fives and 7 community health workers). Activities included interactive lectures and small group discussions on balanced nutrition, digital parenting strategies, and early childhood stimulation. Data were collected on participant demographics and children’s screen time. Most children (43.8%) had 1–2 hours of daily screen time, while 27.4% exceeded 2 hours. Prior to the intervention, most mothers were unaware of WHO screen time recommendations. Post-intervention, 85% demonstrated improved knowledge and identified alternative non-digital stimulation activities. Pondok Gizi Bunda Mengajar effectively enhanced maternal knowledge and community engagement in digital-age parenting, highlighting its potential as a community-based model for integrating nutrition education and child-rearing practices to prevent stunting

Abstract

Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children under five worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2019) reports that pneumonia accounts for approximately 14% of all infant deaths, with more than 740,000 deaths per year. In Indonesia, the prevalence of pneumonia in infants remains high, including in West Nusa Tenggara Province, which recorded 32,128 cases in 2023, with 4,183 cases in West Lombok Regency. One protective factor believed to reduce the risk of pneumonia is exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life. Breast milk contains various immunological components such as secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), lactoferrin, lysozyme, and oligosaccharides, which play a role in protecting against lower respiratory tract infections (Lyons et al., 2020; Moraes-Pinto et al., 2021). This literature review was compiled using a narrative literature review method using relevant national and international sources, including journals from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and official WHO and UNICEF reports. The literature reviewed was published between 2015 and 2024, focusing on the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers. The analysis was conducted descriptively and thematically, reflecting the content of previous studies. Based on the study results, exclusive breastfeeding has been shown to have a significant protective effect against the incidence of pneumonia. Infants who are not exclusively breastfed have a two to five times higher risk of developing lower respiratory tract infections (Popovsky, E.Y. and Florin, T.A., 2021). A global study by Victora et al. (2016) found that exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of severe pneumonia by up to 64% and has the potential to prevent 820,000 child deaths annually. However, the incidence of complicated pneumonia is also influenced by other factors such as nutritional status, basic immunizations, exposure to cigarette smoke, and home environmental conditions (Dean & Florin, 2018; Saunders, 2017). Exclusive breastfeeding plays a crucial role in preventing pneumonia in toddlers through immunological mechanisms and protection of the respiratory mucosa. However, because pneumonia is a multifactorial disease, the effectiveness of exclusive breastfeeding needs to be supported by improved nutritional status, immunization coverage, and environmental improvements. Comprehensive promotive and preventive efforts are needed to reduce the incidence of pneumonia and its complications in the community.

Abstract

Abstract

Pneumonia remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five worldwide, including in Indonesia, with its severity influenced by immunization status, air pollution exposure, delayed access to healthcare, and families’ socioeconomic and behavioral conditions.of families influence the severity of pneumonia. This review aims to explore parental knowledge and behavior and the severity of pneumonia in children under five based on previous studies. This study used a literature review method by collecting and analyzing relevant articles from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect using keywords including "pneumonia", "knowledge", "behavior", and "under-five children". The findings indicate that adequate parental knowledge about pneumonia can support early detection and timely medical care. Parents with better knowledge tend to recognize the early symptoms of pneumonia more quickly and promptly seek medical care. In addition, good preventive behaviors, such as proper hygiene practices, complete immunization, and adequate care, can help prevent pneumonia or reduce the severity of the disease if it occurs. However, some studies show that high knowledge does not always correlate with appropriate treatment-seeking behavior, as it is influenced by other factors such as education level, economic status, and access to healthcare facilities. In addition, poor preventive behavior such as smoking inside the house and inadequate sanitation contributes to increased risk and severity of pneumonia. Parental knowledge and behavior play a crucial role in the prevention and management of pneumonia in children. However, a holistic approach is required, considering educational, economic, and healthcare access factors to ensure effective interventions in reducing the incidence and severity of pneumonia among children.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) remains a major public health problem, requiring effective mosquito breeding site control through the 3M-Plus program involving community participation, including elementary school students. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the Dengue Ranger educational board game and the Ministry of Health leaflet in improving students' knowledge of Aedes aegypti breeding sites and 3M-Plus practices. A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group design was conducted among 213 students from grades 3–6 at SD Negeri 37 Ampenan. Participants were selected using cluster sampling and assigned to the board game group (n = 108) or the leaflet group (n = 105). Knowledge was assessed using a validated questionnaire before the intervention, immediately after, and seven days later. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann–Whitney U test. Knowledge scores increased significantly in both groups (p < 0.05). The mean score increased from 10.50 to 12.44 in the board game group and from 10.79 to 12.05 in the leaflet group. The board game demonstrated significantly greater improvement than the leaflet (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in knowledge retention after seven days (p > 0.05). These findings indicate that the Dengue Ranger educational board game is more effective than leaflets in improving elementary school students' knowledge of Aedes aegypti breeding sites and 3M-Plus practices, while both media provide comparable short-term knowledge retention.
