Abstract

The intersection of loyalty to tradition among Prajurit Karaton and the demands of the times, particularly in terms of naming, is a topic that deserves to be researched. Furthermore, the community characteristics that are usually raised in scientific writings about naming are heterogeneous communities, so homogeneous communities become an important supporting component that completes the topic. This is a qualitative study that uses the Prajurit Karaton as the primary data source and a list of the names of their offspring as the secondary data. As a result, the names of the Prajurit Karaton’s offspring changed from mostly mononyms in the 1960s to polynyms in the 2010s. Nonetheless, the identity of a Javanese society remains. This also demonstrates that the Prajurit Karaton give names in accordance with the times while maintaining their identity as Javanese people and the Javanese cultural values.

Abstract

As several studies emerge analysing some literary work translation, there is lack of study focusing on such translation with certain point of view. This study then exists with the aim to qualitatively analyse Toety Heraty’s poetry entitled ‘The Moon is High’ translated by Carole Satyamurti, a British poet, with the aesthetic-poetic view. As the findings, it is concluded that, even though the translator employs some literal translations, but more often she implements aesthetic-poetic translation method to replicate the poetry along with retaining the poetic nuance from the word choices. However, it will be a challenge for whoever translating literary work with aesthetic-poetic translation method, since the transfer of the message will not only demand the lexical equivalence, but also the similar ‘beauty’ of the work.

Abstract

Within the Mandailing community in Rokan Hulu, as the novelty, the research investigated the diverse viewpoints on nicknames that had developed throughout three generations (older people, millennials, and Generation Z), with a specific emphasis on the links between nicknames and bullying. These nicknames, which could be affectionate or insulting, could fuel or stop bullying. The researchers conducted an interview and a survey at Rokan Hulu, a suburban region in Sumatra, to gather qualitative data for the research. A survey was distributed to 40 individuals in Rokan Hulu. It is evident from the findings that attitudes have changed over time. Many individuals from older generations view nicknames as a form of endearment due to their perceived innocence and strong cultural heritage roots. On the other hand, younger generations, notably millennials and Generation Z, are becoming more aware of the potentially harmful effects that certain nicknames can have, particularly in connection with bullying and inclusion in social groups. People interpret and use language in a way that mirrors the broader societal and cultural changes occurring. By re-evaluating how different generations perceive nicknames, the research contributes significantly to a more in-depth comprehension of how shifting cultural norms influence linguistic practices and the social repercussions of those practices, particularly in the context of bullying.

Abstract

In 2023, Yogyakarta Province has documented 308 instances of sexual violence, including cases of verbal abuse. This fact is surprising given Yogyakarta's unique position as a cultural showcase in Indonesia, which is particularly evident in its depictions of politeness and identity. In contrast, Yogyakarta's Javanese propriety culture, known as unggah-ungguh, functions as a vital protective mechanism for its community by integrating local cultural components. This distinctive cultural politeness parallels Leech's Six Maxims of Politeness: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. This research examines the correlation between these maxims and Javanese parenting practices as delineated in publications by the Department of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control of Yogyakarta, aimed at educators and parents in Yogyakarta, emphasizing the significance of courteous communication and virtuous conduct grounded in Javanese tradition. Strengthening the initiative from school to university levels, together with adequate support from family and community, may lead to a reduction in verbal sexual assault.

Abstract

Yogyakarta Province one of which is regarding verbal violence. On the one hand, this fact is truly ironic in light of Yogyakarta's extraordinary reputation as a cultural diorama in Indonesia, which is particularly evident in its politeness identity representations. Conversely, Yogyakarta's Javanese propriety culture called as unggah-ungguh serves as a fundamental potential safeguard for its society through the incorporation of local cultural elements. This unique cultural politeness is also comparable to Leech's Six Maxims of Politeness, which include Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. This research discusses the relationship between these Maxims and Javanese parenting patterns explained in the books published by the Department of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control of Yogyakarta for teachers and parents in Yogyakarta regarding the importance of polite communication and good behavior that is rooted in Javanese tradition. If the action is strengthened in school to university levels, added with optimal support echoed in the family and community, verbal sexual violence can hopefully diminish.
