Abstract

This study examines the dual role of women in Kampung Batik Giriloyo as housewives and cultural practitioners who preserve the tradition of hand-drawn batik. Using a qualitative case study approach combined with Standpoint Theory, this study argues that batik making for women is not merely an economic activity, but also a medium for cultural transmission and challenging patriarchal norms. The role of the Sido Mukti batik group emerges as an important mediator in communication and economic aspects, with the process of intergenerational knowledge transfer beginning in childhood, and the specific challenges of competition from printed batik being an important point in this study. Data obtained from interviews and observations show how women transform their domestic identities into cultural leadership in the public sphere, despite being hindered by systematic gender barriers. It is hoped that the results of this study can provide a comprehensive interpretation of women’s contributions to the preservation of hand-drawn batik culture. These findings are intended as a reference for efforts to empower women and preserve traditional culture in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of beverage names on consumers' perceptions and decisions. For instance, names like "fruity loop" evoke specific feelings that may affect buying choices. Brand theory emphasizes the significance of menu names in defining a café's character, as such names play a crucial role in drawing in customers and enhancing their satisfaction. Culinary linguistics asserts that the names of products play a crucial role in the branding and communication of food and beverages. The names of drinks in cafés in Yogyakarta showcase naming trends that represent identity, values, and the customer experience, while also linking culinary language and marketing strategies. This study uses qualitative descriptive analysis to collect linguistic and cultural data through field observations. The study consists of four steps: collecting drink menus from well-known and diverse cafes in Yogyakarta, classifying drink names, taking photos and notes of the menus, and conducting in-depth data analysis. Key information includes beverage menu names called “culinaronyms,” which describe language, meaning, and culture. These names are important for products because unique names have the potential to attract consumers. This study highlights the linguistic features found in unique beverage menu titles, such as Vietnam Drip, Black Citrus, and Caramel Macchiato. These names were collected from cafes in Yogyakarta using Google Maps, Instagram, and YouTube. They combine narrative and imaginative language to build brand identity and express social and cultural values. The naming approach uses foreign vocabulary, figurative language, and unique linguistic creativity. This study analyzes the naming patterns of cafes in Yogyakarta, showing that beverage names reflect the personality and image of the cafe. These names are also classified based on meanings related to product identity, cultural connections, and emotional reactions.

Abstract

The intersection of loyalty to tradition among Prajurit Karaton and the demands of the times, particularly in terms of naming, is a topic that deserves to be researched. Furthermore, the community characteristics that are usually raised in scientific writings about naming are heterogeneous communities, so homogeneous communities become an important supporting component that completes the topic. This is a qualitative study that uses the Prajurit Karaton as the primary data source and a list of the names of their offspring as the secondary data. As a result, the names of the Prajurit Karaton’s offspring changed from mostly mononyms in the 1960s to polynyms in the 2010s. Nonetheless, the identity of a Javanese society remains. This also demonstrates that the Prajurit Karaton give names in accordance with the times while maintaining their identity as Javanese people and the Javanese cultural values.
