Abstract

This study developed a website-based interactive encyclopedia to introduce traditional Indonesian musical instruments in arts and culture learning in junior high schools. The research was motivated by the limited collection of traditional musical instruments in schools and the use of learning media that is still one-way and less interactive. The method used is the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) with six stages: concept, design, material collecting, assembly, testing, and distribution. Data were collected through school observations, Google Form questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with arts and culture teachers in several junior high schools in Situbondo Regency. The developed product includes educational text, instrument images, authentic audio, real-time virtual instrument features, an AI-based dictionary, and an adaptive quiz game that can be accessed across multiple platforms without installation. The feasibility test results showed an average score of 93.8%, categorized as very feasible. These findings indicate that MDLC-based interactive multimedia is effective, contextual, and relevant for preserving traditional Indonesian music in the digital era.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the management of community-based arts education at U2 Java Dancer Studio, focusing on curriculum implementation, mechanisms of Javanese cultural transmission, character and emotional intelligence development, and contributions to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). Methods: A qualitative single-case study design was employed. Data were collected over six months through participant observation, in-depth interviews with nine informants (studio leader, instructors, students, and parents), and document analysis. Data were analyzed inductively through coding, categorization, and thematic interpretation. Findings: The study found that U2 Java Dancer Studio applies a structured thematic rotation curriculum with classical Javanese dance serving as a foundational learning framework. Cultural transmission occurs through four interconnected mechanisms: intergenerational learning, embodied learning, contextualization of cultural meanings, and community performances. Dance education also promotes character development and emotional intelligence, particularly confidence, respect, patience, empathy, and aesthetic sensitivity. The studio contributes to SDG 4 by expanding access to inclusive non-formal arts education, supporting lifelong learning, preserving local cultural knowledge, and strengthening community participation in education. Research Implications: The findings highlight the strategic role of community-based art studios as non-formal educational institutions that integrate cultural preservation, character formation, and sustainable education. The study provides practical insights for policymakers and educators seeking to strengthen arts-based educational initiatives. Originality: This study offers an integrated perspective on arts education management, cultural transmission, emotional intelligence development, and sustainable education within a community-based dance studio context, extending the discourse on non-formal education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Children with Special Needs (ABK) require special treatment not only in medical aspects, but also psychosocial and motor aspects. In Sukomulyo Health Center, Gresik Regency, there is a forum called "ABK Love Community" which houses parents and special children. The partner's problem is the lack of variety of therapeutic activities that are recreational and preserve local culture, where activities are often focused on monotonous medical therapy. This community service offers a solution in the form of learning the "Jamuran" Dolanan Dance. The Jamuran Dance was chosen because it contains elements of gross motor movements (walking in circles, holding hands, squatting, standing) and intense social interaction. The implementation method of this community service includes: (1) Preparation and location survey, (2) Socialization to parents/community, (3) Training and mentoring of dance movements (fieldwork), and (4) Evaluation and simple performances. The learning process is carried out with a joyful learning approach (fun learning) and repetition (repetition) considering the diverse characteristics of ABK (Autism, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation). The results of this community service show an increase in children's enthusiasm for movement, gross motor skills that are more stimulated through the dynamic movements of the Jamuran dance, as well as increased emotional bonds between children, parents, and peers. The Jamuran dance has proven effective as a fun, local culture-based alternative therapy medium for the ABK Love Community at the Sukomulyo Community Health Center.

Abstract

Improvisation is a central device that sustains the flexibility, social proximity, and vitality of ludruk performance. Yet the local practice known as spel is commonly reduced to a technical pre-performance meeting, leaving its artistic and pedagogical mechanisms insufficiently conceptualized. This study identifies the distinctive features of spel and develops a conceptual model of improvisation in East Javanese ludruk. An exploratory qualitative approach combines literature review, performance observation, structured and unstructured interviews with ludruk practitioners, document analysis, and source-method triangulation. Findings at the progress-report stage indicate that spel functions as a coordination system connecting narrative maps, scene nodes, bodily and vocal cues, inter-performer rhythm, audience-response reading, and ethical boundaries of humour. Ludruk improvisation is therefore not unstructured spontaneity but real-time co-creation supported by experience, ensemble trust, and cultural knowledge. The article proposes a five-stage spel cycle and contributes to improvisation studies, traditional actor pedagogy, and the regeneration of ludruk. Kata kunci: spel; improvisasi; ludruk; dramaturgi; regenerasi

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum at this time has carried a new approach, namely deep learning that focuses on three principles: full of awareness, meaningful, and encouraging. This paper aims to describe the implementation of the Independent Curriculum with a Deep Learning approach on digital illustration drawing materials at SMA Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Surabaya. The focus of the study is directed to the planning, learning process, and assessment applied by fine arts teachers in grade XII phase F. Writing uses a qualitative method with a case study approach through interview, observation, and documentation techniques. The results of the writing show that teachers have been able to translate the in-depth learning framework that includes the dimensions of graduate profiles, learning principles, learning experiences, and learning frameworks into digital illustration learning activities in a systematic manner. The learning plan is prepared through the determination of the element of "creating", with the selection of materials that are relevant to the needs of the times, and has been integrated with digital media in the form of the Ibis Paint application. The learning process takes place through seven stages ranging from introduction, materials, concept design, sketching, digitization, printing, to reflection. Each stage demonstrates the application of the principles of deep learning: mindful, meaningful, and exhilarating. Assessments are carried out authentically through initial, formative, and summative assessments that emphasize the process and progress of student learning.

Abstract

Amidst the dominance of text-based formal education and the acceleration of digitalization, the oral transmission of traditional arts knowledge tends to be marginalized. Yet this method plays a vital role in preserving authenticity and cultural context in traditional arts learning. This study aims to describe the implementation patterns of the oral method, identify its pedagogical-cultural components, and analyze its contribution to student competency at Sanggar Baladewa Surabaya. A descriptive-analytical qualitative approach was employed. Data were collected through participatory observation across eight training sessions, semi-structured interviews, and documentation studies involving teachers, senior members, and students. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2020), comprising: (1) data condensation, (2) selective dialogue, (3) data presentation, and (4) conclusion drawing. The study reveals that the oral method is implemented through four main patterns: (1) direct verbal instruction and spontaneous correction, (2) oral naming of patterns and terms, (3) phrase repetition via call-and-response mechanisms, and (4) contextual narrative and symbolic analogy. This method functions as an adaptive learning scaffold while simultaneously serving as a medium for transmitting cultural values, etiquette, and artistic philosophy as reflected in the concept of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti. Its contribution is evident in stable procedural memory retention, increased improvisation confidence, and the internalization of collective identity. This study concludes that the oral method is not merely an alternative technique, but a living and relevant cultural pedagogical system worthy of integration into modern arts education curricula.
