Abstract

Improvisation is a central device that sustains the flexibility, social proximity, and vitality of ludruk performance. Yet the local practice known as spel is commonly reduced to a technical pre-performance meeting, leaving its artistic and pedagogical mechanisms insufficiently conceptualized. This study identifies the distinctive features of spel and develops a conceptual model of improvisation in East Javanese ludruk. An exploratory qualitative approach combines literature review, performance observation, structured and unstructured interviews with ludruk practitioners, document analysis, and source-method triangulation. Findings at the progress-report stage indicate that spel functions as a coordination system connecting narrative maps, scene nodes, bodily and vocal cues, inter-performer rhythm, audience-response reading, and ethical boundaries of humour. Ludruk improvisation is therefore not unstructured spontaneity but real-time co-creation supported by experience, ensemble trust, and cultural knowledge. The article proposes a five-stage spel cycle and contributes to improvisation studies, traditional actor pedagogy, and the regeneration of ludruk. Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum at this time has carried a new approach, namely deep learning that focuses on three principles: full of awareness, meaningful, and encouraging. This paper aims to describe the implementation of the Independent Curriculum with a Deep Learning approach on digital illustration drawing materials at SMA Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Surabaya. The focus of the study is directed to the planning, learning process, and assessment applied by fine arts teachers in grade XII phase F. Writing uses a qualitative method with a case study approach through interview, observation, and documentation techniques. The results of the writing show that teachers have been able to translate the in-depth learning framework that includes the dimensions of graduate profiles, learning principles, learning experiences, and learning frameworks into digital illustration learning activities in a systematic manner. The learning plan is prepared through the determination of the element of "creating", with the selection of materials that are relevant to the needs of the times, and has been integrated with digital media in the form of the Ibis Paint application. The learning process takes place through seven stages ranging from introduction, materials, concept design, sketching, digitization, printing, to reflection. Each stage demonstrates the application of the principles of deep learning: mindful, meaningful, and exhilarating. Assessments are carried out authentically through initial, formative, and summative assessments that emphasize the process and progress of student learning.

Abstract

The training method for an actor is the first step that becomes an important part of the success of a theater performance. The right training for actors is training that can develop their potential, such as the actor training conducted by the Ruang Seni Foundation in Tuban Regency. Actor training conducted by the Ruang Seni Pribumi Foundation is carried out once a year and is attended by high school / junior high school / high school theater communities in Tuban Regency. The research method used is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive approach that uses data collection techniques in the form of direct observation, structured interviews and field documentation in the form of photographs. Researchers used triangulation of sources and techniques to test the validity and truth of the research. The results showed that the Ruang Seni Pribumi Foundation in the acting training conducted absorbed Constanin Stanislavsky's theory of acting from 15 stages into 5 stages to make it easier for trainees to understand the concept of playing a role for an actor. The results of the application of the acting training method can be seen in the performance of actors in portraying characters when participating in festivals and winning, as well as in the best presenter category and the best actor and actress nominations.

Abstract

Amidst the dominance of text-based formal education and the acceleration of digitalization, the oral transmission of traditional arts knowledge tends to be marginalized. Yet this method plays a vital role in preserving authenticity and cultural context in traditional arts learning. This study aims to describe the implementation patterns of the oral method, identify its pedagogical-cultural components, and analyze its contribution to student competency at Sanggar Baladewa Surabaya. A descriptive-analytical qualitative approach was employed. Data were collected through participatory observation across eight training sessions, semi-structured interviews, and documentation studies involving teachers, senior members, and students. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2020), comprising: (1) data condensation, (2) selective dialogue, (3) data presentation, and (4) conclusion drawing. The study reveals that the oral method is implemented through four main patterns: (1) direct verbal instruction and spontaneous correction, (2) oral naming of patterns and terms, (3) phrase repetition via call-and-response mechanisms, and (4) contextual narrative and symbolic analogy. This method functions as an adaptive learning scaffold while simultaneously serving as a medium for transmitting cultural values, etiquette, and artistic philosophy as reflected in the concept of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti. Its contribution is evident in stable procedural memory retention, increased improvisation confidence, and the internalization of collective identity. This study concludes that the oral method is not merely an alternative technique, but a living and relevant cultural pedagogical system worthy of integration into modern arts education curricula.

Abstract

The limited familiarity of students with local culture, especially the traditional musical instrument Thuk-thuk, and the lack of contextual interactive learning media motivated this study. The goal was to develop an interactive instructional video based on local culture to improve the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students in Bangkalan Regency. Using the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate), the research combined interactive digital media, local content, and critical thinking indicators from the Paul & Elder framework. Findings revealed most students were unfamiliar with the Thuk-thuk, and suitable learning resources were rare. The video was created to meet the Merdeka Curriculum’s learning goals. Expert validation in subject matter, media, and language confirmed its high quality. Implementation in two classes showed a moderate but statistically significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills. Besides delivering content visually and auditorily, the video encourages active engagement in analysis and evaluation while promoting the preservation of local culture. Thus, this video serves as an innovative and effective teaching tool for Cultural Arts education. Abstract

Creativity and innovation in ludruk need to be done because this traditional art is already on the verge of extinction. The lack of regeneration of interested young people and changes in people's tastes are the dominant factors causing the extinction of Ludruk. Without creative efforts in packaging ludruk to be relevant to the current context, supported by innovations in the presentation and use of technology, this cultural heritage is at risk of being lost in the next decade. This research aims to find out the creativity and innovation that needs to be done to preserve Ludruk art performances. The research method applied is qualitative. The research location is in the Ludruk Lamongan community. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and focused discussions. The results of the study showed that the creativity carried out by the Sendakala community included intensive practice before the performance; preparation of the manuscript as a guide for conducting dialogues; shortening of the duration of the show; colossal Ludruk performances; and collaboration with other Ludruk communities. Innovations include the dissemination of Ludruk art performances to schools; management improvement where there is a division of duties between stage directors, music directors, and dance directors; the use of technology to support the background of the scene; and the use of publications through social media. The creativity and innovation carried out by the Sendakala group is part of the revitalization effort to preserve Ludruk art performances in Lamongan Regency.
