Abstract

Hybrid Bamboo Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) were produced to improve bamboo OSB's physical and mechanical properties. Shelling ratio adjustment of the strand type combination could determine the optimal physical and mechanical properties of hybrid bamboo oriented strand boards (OSB). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of hybrid betung and andong bamboos OSB at various shelling ratios. Steam modified strands of betung and andong bamboo were used as an outer layer and core layer, respectively. Hybrid bamboo OSBs were prepared with 0.7 g cm-3 target density and 8% phenol-formaldehyde resin content. Three layers of OSB were made with outer: core shelling ratios of 30:70, 40:60, 50:50, and 60:40. The physical and mechanical properties of the OSB were tested referring to the JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The targeted board density was achieved and the physical properties of all hybrid bamboo OSB have met the requirement of CSA O437.0 (Grade O-1) standard criteria. The parallel modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) increased with increasing outer layer ratio. However, the perpendicular MOE and MOR decreased with increasing outer layer ratio. The internal bonding (IB) of the OSB with a shelling ratio of 30:70 and 40:60 met with the requirement of the CSA O437.0 (Grade O-1) standard.

Abstract

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the extractive substances of heartwood of palepek baringin wood (Shorea leavis Ridl) as a bio-active substance to wood destroying fungi i.e. Schizophyllum commune Fr and Pleurotus ostreatus. The 40 mesh of heartwood meals was extracted by methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-hexane and buthanol. The extractives obtained were subjected to wood destroying fungi S. commune and P. ostreatus, and preservative containing copper, chrome and boron (CCB) was used for comparison. The extractive of palepek baringin wood was dominated by ethylacetate fraction (3.54%), followed by chloroform and butanol fraction 1.73% and n-hexane (0.09%). All fractions have an antifungal activity to inhibit the growth of S. commune and P. ostreatus. Concentration of 50 ppm butanol fraction inhibited the growth of S. commune, and concentration of 250 ppm chloroform fraction inhited the growth of Pleurotus sp. Preservative of CCB 100 ppm inhibited the growth of S. commune and P. ostreatus by 43%. Butanol fraction contained 16 active compounds (PB.1-PB.16) that could inhibit the growth both of S. commune and P. ostreatus with IC50 54.29-64.32 and 48.40-65.86 ppm, respectively. Based on mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and 1HNMR analysis, the compound of PB.1.1 which has anti-fungal activity was 2,3-dihydroxyoctadecanoic acid.Key words: 2,3-dihydroxyoctadecanoic acid, antifungal, Pleurotus ostreatus, Schyzophlum commune, Shorea leavis

Abstract

Bamboo has good prospects for composite raw materials such as for Oriented Strand Board (OSB) product. Previous research has shown that steam and rinsing with water and 1% NaOH solution treatments of strand improved the properties of OSB, which might be caused by changing in the chemical components content of bamboo. This study aimed to determine the chemical components content change of sembilang bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro), black bamboo (Gigantochloa nigrocillata Kurz.), and tali bamboo (G. apus (Bl.ex Schult.f.)) due to steam and rinsing treatment. The chemical components of bamboo were analyzed referring to the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry standards (TAPPI). The results showed that the most significant changes in the chemical components content of bamboo occured for holocellulose, hemicellulose, extractive contents, and pH values. The decreasing of hemicellulose, extractive contents, and increasing pH values due to the steam and 1% NaOH rinsing treatment may improve the adhesion quality of OSB.

Abstract

Target kerapatan ditetapkan 0,70 g cm-3. Pengujian sifat fisis dan mekanis papan partikel mengacu pada standar JIS A 5908:2003. Perlakuan perendaman asam asetat meningkatkan sifat fisis papan partikel, walaupun masih belum memenuhi standar JIS A 5908:2003. Sifat mekanis papan partikel yang dihasilkan memenuhi standar JIS A 5908:2003 untuk modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bond (IB) dan kuat pegang sekrup. Peningkatan konsentrasi asam asetat menyebabkan penurunan sifat mekanis papan.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate of the physical and mechanical properties of oriented strand board (OSB) prepared from acetylated wood strands. Strands derived from Acacia mangium wood were immersed in acetic anhydride for 24 h. After that, strands were dried at 60 C to reach moisture content (MC) of 5%. The slenderness and aspect ratios of strands were 100.72±39.42 and 3.05 ± 0.44. Boards size and target density were set at (25x25x0.5) cm3 and 0.7 g cm-3. The strand compositions for face, core, and back layers were 25, 50, and 25%, respectively. Phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin with amount of 8% was used to bind the strands. The results showed that weight percent gain (WPG) of acetylated strands was 4%. Acetylated strands resulted in improvement of dimensional stabilization (water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling (TS) parameters) with anti-shrink efficiency (ASE) value of 19.65%. On the other hand, the modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and internal bond (IB) were found to decrease with acetylation treatment. All the physical and mechanical properties of OSB evaluated except IB parameter fulfilled the requirements of JIS A 5908-2003 standard.Key words: acetylated, anti-shrink efficiency, dimensional stability, oriented strand board

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of hybrid particleboard made from combination of sengon wood (Falcataria moluccana), jabon wood (Anthocephalus cadamba), and betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) with hot water immersion treatment. Pretreatment with hot water immersion was carried out in water bath at 80 ºC for 2 hours. The boards were made using urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive with (30x30x0.9) cm3 size and 0.6 g cm-3 target density. Physical and mechanical properties of hybrid particleboards were evaluated based on JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The results showed that the combination treatment with bamboo particles can increase the mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the particleboards especially when combined with jabon particles. Hot water immersion treatment can improve the mechanical properties (MOE, MOR and IB) of hybrid particleboards. However, hot water immersion treatment decreased dimensional stability (thickness swelling and water absorption) of hybrid particleboards.

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of particle board made from sengon and mangium woods treated with cold water immersion. Particles of sengon and mangium immersed in cold water for 24 hours. The particles of sengon and mangium are combined with a ratio of 100: 0; 0: 100; 75:25; and 50:50. Particle boards are made in size (30x30x0,9) cm3 with target densities of 0.7 g cm-3. The particle board was binded with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) adhesive at 10% content and hot press at 140 °C with 25 kgf cm-2 for 7 minutes. The physical and mechanical properties of particle board are evaluated according to JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The physical and mechanical properties of particle board were much affected by particle combination and cold water immersion treatment. The physical (i.e density, moisture content, water absorption (WA), and thickness swelling (TS)) and mechanical properties (ie. modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and internal bonding (IB)) were evaluated. The results showed that cold water immersion improved dimensional stability (WA and TS) of particle board obtained. However, some mechanical properties decreased.

Abstract

This research focused on distribution of water borne preservative on woods preserved using full cell and empty cell processes. Retention, penetration, and durability of preserved woods against dry wood termite (Cryptotermes cynochephalus LIGHT) attacked were evaluated. Pine (Pinus merkusii) and sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) woods were preserved using 5% Wolmanit CB (water soluble preservative) using full cell and empty cell processes. The results indicated that retention of preservative preserved with full cell process was higher than empty cell process. Copper penetration on sengon wood preserved using full cell process was much higher than empty cell process. Distribution of copper and chromium on wood preserved using full cell process evenly distributed through the wood both in pine and sengon woods. They were sharply decreased from outerpart to inner part of wood when preserved using empty cell process. The whole part of pine and sengon woods preserved by either full cell or empty cell processes strongly resistance against dry wood termite attacked. Quantitative analysis of active substance of preservative using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) could detect the preservative in preserved wood more accurately compared using conventional method (retention and penetration tests).Key words: distribution pattern, durability, empty cell process, full cell process, water borne preservative

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of wood species and layer structure on physical and mechanical properties of strand board made from Paraserianthes falcataria, Maesopsis eminii and Acacia mangium woods collected from planted forest in Bogor district, Indonesia. The densities of P. falcataria, M. eminii and A. mangium woods were 0.36, 0.41 and 0.46 g cm-3, respectively. Three types of layer structures namely perpendicular, parallel, and random orientation were applied. Methylene diisocyanate (MDI) resin with 7% resin amount (w/w) was used. The physical and mechanical properties of strand board were evaluated based on CSA 0437.0 standard. The results indicated that strand board manufactured from wood with lower density (P. falcataria) had higher mechanical properties (modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bond) and lower dimensional stability (water absorption and thickness swelling) compared to strand board manufactured from higher density (A. mangium), vice versa. Strand orientation strongly affected the physical and mechanical properties of board with perpendicular orientation showed superior performance as compared to parallel and random orientation. Physical and mechanical properties of oriented strand board (OSB) made from fast growing tree species met the requirement of CSA 0437.0 standard for grade O-1 OSB panels.Key words: layer structure, methylene diisocyanate resin, strand board, tropical wood species,
