Abstract

A sports competition in Indonesia, namely the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL), reported that 10 players had tested positive for COVID-19. Based on the results of the preliminary survey on athletes, ranging its ages from 11-13 years, at basketball club X of Semarang City, it was revealed that 96.9% of the athletes did not use masks during practice's break time on the court's sidelines and 53.1% of athletes never implied social distancing outside the court. This study aims at describing the compliance's implication of the COVID-19 health protocol during the training of basketball athletes at Club X of Semarang City with familial support and attitudes as the parameter. This study used a cross-sectional study design and took the entire study population to be approximately 86 athletes. The research variables consisted of attitudes, family support, and compliance towards the implementation of the COVID-19 health protocol. This study indicated that the proportion of non-compliant athletes (57%) is greater than the proportion of compliant athletes (43%) in implementing the COVID-19 health protocol during the training. Athletes who experienced family support (56,8%) and a positive attitude (53,3%) tended to comply with the covid-19 health protocol during training. It is suggested for the management of basketball club X to conduct socialization related to the use of masks and to maintain the distance during practice's break time on the sidelines for compliance improvement.

Abstract

Semarang, the capital city of Central Java Province, is one of the endemic areas in Indonesia with increasing case fatality rate in the last three years. Accordingly, the educational intervention is fundamentally requested. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of health education intervention on the community knowledge improvement and its implication for reducing the rat populations. The study was performed using field experiment with pretest and post test designs. A total of 55 cadres and housewives joining on the various education program at Sumurboto Village, Banyumanik Sub district, Semarang was used as research subjects. The health education interventions introduced in the study were counselling and mentoring. ,Data were analyzed using paired t-test. The results revealed that the knowledge of the subject research significantly increased and the rat populations significantly decreased after being given the educational intervention. The rat species identified in Sumurboto Village were Rattus norvegicus, R. tanezumi, R. exulans and Suncus murinus. The knowledge score before and after the intervention was 80.87 and 88.83 respectively. Meanwhile, the rat populations measured by trap success method reduced from 8% to 6% after the intervention. Nevertheless, the rat population in Sumurboto Village is considerably relative high indicating that the village possessed a high risk on leptospirosis attack. It is strongly suggested that the health education intervention in the community should be regularly maintained in order to accelerate the knowledge of leptospirosis and reduce the rat populations.

Abstract

Aedes albopictus is the secondary vector that played an important role in the transmission of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Previous research has examined the exact radiation dose in producing Ae. albopictus sterile males, which is a dose of 60 Gy. Before being applied in the field, a semi-field trial phase is actually needed. This study aims to determine the competitiveness of Ae. albopictus sterile male mating with a semi-field test. This study is a field experiment and used males radiated until becoming a sterile mosquito. Subject mated to fertile female and divided into 3 groups of samples, the control group (10 normal males and 10 normal females), the test group (10 sterile males and 10 normal females) and the combination group (10 normal males, 30 sterile males, and 10 normal females). Treatment was performed with 3 replications. Tested mosquitoes were placed into the special tent of bugs (bugdoom) with condusive environmental conditions of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes. The results of study showed that there was significant differences (p ≤ 0.0001) the level of sterility of eggs. The test insect group produced the highest sterile eggs 100% compared to the other groups. Value of Mating Competitiveness (C index) Male Sterile Mosquito Ae. albopictus of 0.34. This showed that for TSM applications in actual conditions, it is required 3 times of the population size of sterile males from the normal male population in the field.
