Abstract

Introduction: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) reflects the physical, mental, and social well-being of adolescents. Individuals in orphanages are often exposed to stress, which may undermine their HRQoL. This study aimed to explore the HRQoL of adolescents living in orphanages and to examine the roles of perceived health status, self-efficacy, and demographic factors. Methods: A multi-center cross sectional study with convenience sampling was conducted to recruit 238 adolescents aged 13-18 years from 16 orphanages in Malang City, Indonesia. Data were obtained using the KIDSCREEN-27 Child and Adolescent Version, Perceived Health Status, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Questionnaires. Stata 16.0 was used to conduct descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and hierarchical linear regressions. Results: The mean total HRQoL score was 94.4±12.7, with the highest sub‑scale score in peers and social support (3.8±0.7) and the lowest in physical well-being (3.2±0.7). Perceived health status (8.9±1.8) and self-esteem (29.1±3.5) were both positively associated with HRQoL (r=0.31 and r=0.48, respectively; p<0.001), whereas the two variables were not correlated with each other (r=0.09, p>0.05). In the parsimonious regression model, perceived health status (β=3.19, p<0.001) and self-esteem (β=0.97, p<0.001) together explained 30% (R²=0.30) of the variance in HRQoL; inclusion of demographic characteristics increased the explained variance to only 31% and none reached statistical significance. Conclusions: These findings suggest that perceived health status and self-esteem are determinants of HRQoL in adolescents living in orphanages. Nurses should prioritize routine assessments and implement interventions that strengthen self-esteem and perceived health status to improve HRQoL among adolescents living in orphanages.

Abstract

Abstract

Soepraoen Malang.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition marked by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from insulin resistance and decreased insulin secretion. Effective glycemic control is crucial to prevent complications, and HbA1c is commonly utilized as an indicator of long-term blood glucose levels. This study aimed to examine the relationship between HbA1c levels and blood glucose levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Tilamuta Community Health Center, Boalemo Regency, Gorontalo Province. This study employed an analytical cross-sectional design using a total sampling method, involving 557 patients. Data were collected from laboratory records and analyzed through descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, Spearman correlation, and chi-square test. The findings indicated that the average HbA1c level was 7.39%, while the mean blood glucose level was 205.85 mg/dL. A significant and very strong positive correlation was found between HbA1c and blood glucose levels (p=0.000; r=0.862). Furthermore, medication adherence showed a significant association with HbA1c status (p=0.000). These results underscore the role of HbA1c as a dependable marker for assessing glycemic control and highlight the importance of medication adherence in optimizing the management of type 2 diaType 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition marked by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from insulin resistance and decreased insulin secretion. Abstract

Diabetes mellitus, as a persistent non-infectious metabolic pathology increasingly prominent in the global epidemiological spectrum, is fundamentally characterized by dysfunctional hyperglycemia rooted in primary disruptions of pancreatic insulin hormone synthesis or peripheral resistance to its biological action, thereby inducing dynamic imbalances in gluconeogenesis and glycolysis pathways; amid the hypothesis that body mass index (BMI) as a measure of central adiposity potentially mediates variability in serum glucose levels, this quantitative observational study with a cross-sectional design rigorously tests the causal relationship between BMI and fasting/random blood glucose concentrations in a cohort of 134 adult subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus affiliated with primary care services at Puskesmas Bongo II, Boalemo Regency, through an inclusive total sampling recruitment strategy, precision anthropometric measurement instruments (height, weight, WHO BMI categorization), and laboratory-validated glucometric validation, with multivariate inferential processing based on the Chi-Square independence test at a Type I error rate of α=0.05 using the latest edition of the SPSS analytical suite; the demographic profile highlights female gender supremacy (90 individuals, 67.2%), the normoweight group (78 cases, 58.2%), concurrent with substantial glycemic elevation prevalence (78 subjects, 58.2%), but the crucial statistical output reveals a p-value of 0.831 (>0.05) that negates any probabilistically meaningful association, thus the substantive conclusion affirms the non-significance of the BMI-glucose relationship in this local context, while implying the dominance of alternative etiopathogenic factors such as hypercaloric macronutrient intake patterns, deficits in aerobic/anaerobic physical activity, non-adherence to multidisciplinary pharmacological protocols (e.g., metformin/oral hypoglycemics), and a comprehensive management paradigm integrating behavioral education, continuous monitoring, and personalized interventions to mitigate long-term cardiovascular risks across the diabetes mellitus spectrum.

Abstract

The high number of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) in Indonesia, driven by environmental factors and the vulnerability of the child population, is a serious concern. Children and adolescents in Child Welfare Institutions (LKSA) are at high risk due to crowded conditions and limited facilities. This community service activity aims to increase awareness and practice of ARI prevention among children at the LKSA Panti Asuhan Berkah Palangka Raya. The "PELINDUNG" intervention adopted a comprehensive approach, including the distribution of masks and handwashing soap, as well as interactive health education. Educational materials covered ARI, 6-step Handwashing with Soap (CTPS), and demonstrations of correct mask use, delivered through posters and hands-on practice. Data on participation and initial responses were collected during the activity. The program successfully reached approximately 70 children and adolescents at the LKSA Panti Asuhan Berkah, who demonstrated active participation and positive responses. The provision of essential health facilities was also well received. Results indicated increased awareness and understanding of ARI prevention among participants. This community-based intervention was effective in improving preventive behaviors in vulnerable communities. It is hoped that more structured health support and regular evaluation of educational sustainability can continue to be implemented to improve the health of children and adolescents in LKSA.
