Abstract

Abstract

Etlingera alba (EA) is one of the endemic plants grown in Sulawesi. We determined the cytotoxic and anti-metastatic activity of isolates obtained from EA rhizome extract. IC50 value for 1,7-diphenyl-6-heptene-3-one, sitostenone, sinapyl alcohol diacetate, and sinapyl alcohol acetate were 134.59; 170 ; 128.11; and 161.96 μg/mL, respectively. The compounds also had anti-migration activity. 200-μg/mL Sitostenon exhibited the lowest migration rate (3.32%). The free bond energies of sitostenon, 1,7-diphenyl-6-heptene-3-one, sinapyl alcohol acetate, and sinapyl alcohol diacetate were -11.81; -8.25; -6.64; and -6.28 kcal/mol, respectively. All compounds were more effective in stabilizing the Matrix metalloproteinase 1 complex. Isolation from EA rhizomes have the potential to be developed as anti-metastatic for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Abstract

Diabetes is a non-communicable disease with metabolic dysfunction characterized by high glucose levels due to damage to pancreatic β cells so that insulin cannot be secreted normally by the body. Diabetes mellitus cannot be cured, but it can only be controlled with appropriate treatment. Most of the available synthetic antidiabetic treatments have serious side effects and are quite expensive. Therefore, traditional herbal medicine is an alternative which is used for some people in maintaining normal blood sugar levels. The use of herbal therapy with a combination of plant extracts has the potential to be more effective in lowering blood sugar when compared to single plant extracts. The aim of this article review is that to compile and provide a scientific overview of the various studies which have been conducted previously regarding the effectiveness of combinations of herbal plant extracts in diabetes mellitus. A comprehensive literature study was conducted by using various electronic search databases with the keyword “Combination of antidiabetic extracts” and 30 international research journals which were combined into review articles were obtained which shows that combinations of plant extracts proved to be more effective in lowering blood glucose levels compared to single herbal plant extracts.

Abstract

Abstract

Dendritic cell (DC) vaccines, as immunotherapy agents, can gather up and transport cancer-related antigens to T lymphocytes, activating anti-tumor effector responses. After being activated by DC, cytotoxic T lymphocyte cells (CTL) will secrete the cytolytic granzyme B that can effectively induce rapid apoptosis of target cells. On the other hand, DC also secrete several cytokines and a large number of exosomes, which together operate as a whole antigen-presenting entity. The efficacy of the vaccine’s treatment may be affected by the sources used for DC vaccines. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) from healthy donors can be employed when autologous cancer patient’s peripheral blood (PB) cannot be used as a source for isolating DC due to genetic abnormalities. Comparing UCB to other sources, there is a painless method of collecting sources as opposed to PB, which necessitates a venipuncture or leukapheresis procedure to isolate the blood. Many studies related to the use of PB-DC have been carried out, but research on potential comparisons between PB-DC and UCB-DC is still very limited. In this review, the potential of PB- and UCB-derived DC and their secretomes for cancer will be discussed. Keywords: dendritic cells, vaccines, umbilical cord blood, peripheral blood

Abstract

Lupun root is the local name for Poikilospermum suaveolens (Blume) Merr. in the Aranio region, South of Borneo, Indonesia. P.suaveolens is a medicinal plant traditionally used to treat various ailments and to enhance the body’s immune function. This study aimed to investigate the secondary metabolites and antioxidant capacity of the ethanol extract derived from the root of Lupun (P. suaveolens). Samples were collected from Aranio, South Borneo. Extraction was performed by maceration using 96% ethanol. The analysis included phytochemical screening and evaluation of antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay measured by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic compounds in the Lupun root extract. The antioxidant assay showed an IC50 value of 20.44 µg/mL, indicating strong antioxidant potential of the ethanol extract. These results highlight the plant’s promise as a candidate for pharmaceutical development.
