Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has become a global health concern with a rapidly increasing prevalence, including among adolescents. Early prevention efforts are essential and can be implemented through school-based peer education approaches. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of school-based peer education on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to diabetes mellitus prevention among adolescents. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest control group was employed. The sample consisted of 90 adolescents, divided equally into the intervention and control groups (45 participants each). The intervention group received peer education through four weekly sessions, each lasting 60 minutes, while the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires assessing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to diabetes mellitus prevention. The analysis employed the Mann-Whitney U test, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, the independent t-test, and the paired t-test. Results: The intervention group exhibited a considerably greater increase in knowledge scores compared to the control group (p=0.001). Attitude scores improved in the intervention group but declined in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.005). Despite a marginally bigger improvement in behavior scores within the intervention group, the difference lacked statistical significance (p=0.802). Conclusion: School-based peer education improved adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward diabetes mellitus prevention but did not significantly influence preventive behaviors. Therefore, sustainable educational interventions that are integrated into school programs and support from various stakeholders

National health development is essentially the development of quality Indonesian people where one of the strategic efforts to improve a quality generation is through education and health through the School Health Business (UKS) program. The purpose of this community service is to improve the knowledge and skills of washing hand with soap (CTPS) properly in preventing diarrhea and worms in students at the Kresna and Jatayu State Elementary Schools in the Pasirkaliki Health Center , Bandung . The method used in this activity is participatory training and mentoring for school children through discussions, questions answers, demonstrations, and direct practice simulations in groups. The respondents who took part in this program were 40 elementary school students in grades 4 and 5 who were randomly selected. The results showed an increase in the average score before and after training for elementary school students, the average knowledge (1.7 to 2.83), and the average increase in skills (1.64 to 2.88). Elementary school students showed enthusiasm and were able to demonstrate how to wash hands with soap (CTPS). This activity needs to be followed up in collaboration with the Puskesmas to map out achievements in the implementation of training on the prevention of diarrhea and helminthiasis in primary schools in other Puskesmas.

Abstract

The transition in education from elementary school to junior high school is a difficult process for teenagers and requires adjustment. The process of adapting to teenagers is becoming increasingly difficult because they are currently faced with the Covid 19 pandemic. The complexity of the developmental task is a stressor for teenagers who are first year students in Junior High School. Self-adjustment is important in order to be able to align the needs of oneself and the situation outside of adolescents in order to get a better relationship between themselves and their environment. The failure of adolescents to make adjustments will cause problems such as irresponsible behavior and neglect of lessons, aggressive attitudes and withdrawing from association with peers. Based on this review, it is necessary to conduct a screening regarding the adjustment of adolescents in first year junior high school students during the Covid 19 pandemic. The research design method used descriptive quantitative. The sample in the study amounted to 81 respondents. The data collection technique used a questionnaire distributed via a google form link. Data analysis used univariate to describe the characteristics of respondents and students' self-adjustment. Data were analyzed with categorization scoring guidelines using frequency and percentage distributions. The results showed that 40.74% had sufficient adjustment and 59.26% had less adjustment. Efforts are needed to improve adolescent adjustment to prevent problems in adolescents.
