Abstract

Padang Cakur Village, South Pariaman Subdistrict, Pariaman City, holds potential for the development of cattle farming. However, local cattle farmers are facing challenges in meeting the feed requirements due to shrinking green pasturelands. To address this issue, alternative feed sources from agricultural waste are needed. The problem lies in the fact that farmers lack the knowledge and skills to process agricultural waste into cattle feed. This technology transfer activity aims to: 1) Enhance the knowledge and skills of cattle farmers in utilizing agricultural waste, such as rice straw fermentation with the addition of sago (Silage), as cattle feed, and 2) Improve cattle farmers' understanding of the process of fermenting banana stems with the addition of rice bran. The methods employed in this technology transfer activity include extension through lectures and training sessions. Lecture-based methods are used to deliver information regarding both feed technologies, while training sessions are conducted to demonstrate the procedures for producing rice straw silage with sago and fermenting banana stems with rice bran. The outcomes of this technology transfer activity have increased the knowledge and skills of cattle farmers, particularly in feed production technologies like rice straw silage with sago (Silage) and fermented banana stem feed with rice bran. As evidence of success, participating cattle farmers have collectively produced 50 kilograms of Silage and 30 kilograms of fermented banana stem feed.

Abstract

A simple cultivation process and an excellent opportunity to improve the household economy is a type of business that must be continuously educated in the community. Galo-galo (Trigona bees) are a group of small, stingless bees belonging to the Meliponini group, which are closely related to the stinging honey bees (Apis spp) in the Apidae tribe, which can be cultivated. Galo-galo cultivation is a simple type of business and has good economic prospects for the community; for this reason, community service activities need to be carried out in Alai Galombang Village Pariaman City, West Sumatera, namely a sub-district that has potential natural resources that can be used to provide nectar (food source), provide pollen (seed producer) and provide resin (nest builder) as well as guarantee water availability. Galo-galo education in the community uses counselling (socialization) and mentoring methods. The results of the activity show that education on Galo-galo cultivation among the community has resulted in fundamental changes in interest, knowledge and skills in Galo-galo cultivation. The proof is that the community already has four colonies and has carried out the first harvest in two colonies with a production output of 450 grams, potentially improving its economy.

Abstract

Women Farmers Group can play a role in rural development, because most of the FWG members are housewives who still have a lot of time, energy and can utilize vacant land and home gardens as locations to run relevant businesses to be more productive. Increased productivity of FWG members will be able to help the household economy so that in turn it can make them more empowered. The problem is that efforts to help the household economy are sometimes hampered by limited knowledge and skills. In order for the quality of human resources FWG to be adequate, it is necessary to conduct training activities through a structured extension program. The objectives of the activity are 1) to educate FWG Nagari Silga members in utilizing empty land into a Family Medicinal Plant garden and 2) to increase knowledge and skills in making salted eggs for FWG members in Nagari Sialang Gaung, Koto Baru District, Dharmasraya Regency. The method of transferring knowledge and technology (science and technology) applied is using the extension method with a lecture, training and mentoring approach. The results of the activity are the Women Farmers Group in Nagari Sialang Gaung, Dharmasraya Regency has increased knowledge and skills in utilizing empty land to be more productive with evidence that a 120 meter Toga garden (10 x 12 meters) has been established which contains 10 (ten) types of medicinal plants and has been able to produce new food products in the form of salted eggs. The conclusion of the activity is that the transfer of science and technology has been able to increase the productivity of FWG members, especially in utilizing vacant land and producing salted egg products, which indicates that they will be more empowered in the future.

Nagari Cupak is a sub-district in Solok Regency with a big rice field that can be developed to increase farmers’ wealth. The development of rice field potential in Nagari Cupak can be conducted with agricultural extension to farmers. One of the outreach topics that can deliver to farmers is the importance of the efficient functioning of farmer groups (as a learning class, as production units, and as a place to cooperate). In this situation, the topic regarding conserving water and soil in rice fields for efficient rice production in Nagari Cupak is another one that may be discussed with farmers. The agricultural extension was carried out in Jorong Panyalai, Nagari Cupak, Gunung Talang District, on Thursday, 10 August 2023. The method used in community service is the lecture method. Furthermore, it continued with a question-and-answer session. The object of this community service is to join farmer groups in Nagari Cupak, which consists of 18 farmer groups. These activities showed that the farmers did not optimise the group’s function because they only used it as a gathering place. Farmer groups also shared the issues they frequently encountered, and solutions were offered. In addition, agricultural extension activities were continued with practice regarding soil and water conservation on land provided by the Nagari Cupak Government. The farmers’ persistence can be seen in their enthusiasm for this extension activity until the end of the extension. In order to enable farmers to practice soil and water conservation on their own, they also requested that Extension Officers continue to support them.
