Abstract

Methylene blue (MB) is one of the dyes used often by the textile industry. Therefore, MB residual is contained in the textile industry waste. MB can irritate, leading to permanent eye and animal injuries; therefore, the textile industry waste concentration must be degraded before disposed to the environment. MB residual in textile industry waste can be treated with activated carbon adsorption. However, the adsorption method is less effective because the deposition takes a long time. This research aims to make activated carbon composites from banana peels and magnesium ferrite (BPAC/MgFe2O4) using the coprecipitation method to obtain activated carbon with magnetic properties (magnetic adsorbent). The obtained composite was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX), and Surface Area Analyzer. The adsorption performance of methylene blue on composites was evaluated with variations in pH, concentration, contact time, determination of adsorption isotherms, and kinetics of adsorption. XRD analysis results showed the composite has a cubic crystal structure with a crystallite size of 7.69 nm. SEM analysis results show the surface morphology has pores with irregular shapes. EDX analysis results showed that the composition of activated carbon composite was 65.56% carbon, 2.28% Mg, 5.50% Fe, and 26.66% O. The results surface area analysis showed a composite surface area of 88.134 m2/g. Composite adsorption performance showed maximum results at pH 7, variations in concentration at 10 ppm, and contact time 180 minutes with adsorption capability of 99.26%. Determination of the adsorption isotherm follows the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model with a pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics model. The obtained BPAC/MgFe2O4 composite can potentially be a magnetic adsorbent capable of adsorbing methylene blue in an aqueous solution.

Abstract

CaTiO3 as one of the perovskite-based photocatalysts has a band gap energy of 3.5 eV (~354 nm), thus will work at the ultraviolet light region. One of the strategies to decrease the band gap energy is doping metal. In this research, CaTiO3 was doped by Fe element as purposes to decreasing its band gap energy. Fe doped CaTiO3 compounds were synthesized using molten NaCl salt method. The diffractogram samples showed that the Fe-doped CaTiO3 crystal was successfully prepared. Meanwhile, the SEM images showed that the particle shape was regular polyhedral morphology, and doping Fe3+ caused the particle size to decrease and agglomerated. The UV-Vis DRS spectra showed that the Fe-dopant revealed the absorption light at visible range wavelength.

Abstract

Polypyrrole (PPy) is widely regarded as a useful electrode material because it has the advantages of low cost, high electrical conductivity, and thermal stability. This study aimed to synthesize PPy membranes using polyphenol oxidase (PPO) isolated from white oyster mushrooms as a biocatalyst for processing textile wastewater. The membranes were produced through the electropolymerization of pyrrole (Py) using the electrodeposition method. The raw materials comprised 0.05 M Py and crude PPO white oyster mushroom extract at 35% v/v in citrate buffer pH = 6.8. The electrolysis process was performed at 6.00 V and 1.063–1.142 A using 16.57-48.97% immobilized PPO in PPy, PPO activity of 1.640–4.160 U, and 0.35 mM phenol as a substrate. The results showed that the use of the membrane in textile wastewater with a discontinuous flow caused a decrease of pH by 14.86%, phenol by 6.80%, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) by 81.30%, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) by 78.25%, and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) by 20.65%. Meanwhile, using the sample with a continuous flow caused a decrease of pH by 23.97%, phenol by 26.09%, COD by 88.50%, BOD by 78.00%, and TSS by 65.70%. The physical performance of membrane application to textile wastewater with discontinuous (flow rate = 48.19–51.50 L/h, flux = 3191.6–3387.5 L.m-2.h-1, and permeability = 319.2–338.7 Lm-2.h-1.bar) and continuous flow (flow rate = 48.19 L/h, flux = 3191.6 Lm-2.h-1, and permeability = 319.2 Lm-2.h-1.bar) was also assessed in this study. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image was used to assess the morphology of the membrane before and after its application.

Abstract

Abstract

Sphalerite is one of the sulfide ore minerals that serves as the raw material for zinc sulfide concentrate (ZnS). Sphalerite in nature needs to be processed through a concentration process to become a high-value ZnS concentrate. The determination of zinc (Zn) content in the ZnS concentrate is carried out using complexometric methods, referring to the modified ISO 13658:2000 method in the preparation stage. In this research, the validity of the test results was conducted using several parameters, including precision testing (repeatability and reproducibility), accuracy (recovery and test result comparison with CRM value), and measurement of relative uncertainty in Zn content determination in ZnS concentrate using the modified ISO 13658:2000 method, it is conducted by two analysts. Certified reference material (CRM) O354 with a Zn content range of (49,30±2,46)% was used as a sample in this research. Zinc content in CRM O354 by Analyst X obtained 49.30% with RSD=0.37% and range of Recovery=(99.5-100.6)%, while Analyst Y obtained 49.03% with RSD=0.64% and range of Recovery=(98.1-99.9)%. Mean of results of the determination of Analyst X and Analyst Y is 49.13% with an uncertainty expanded by 1.90% so, Zn content is obtained at (49,13±1,90)% and the relative uncertainty is obtained at 3.87%. The minimum criteria for precision testing in terms of repeatability are RSD<2/3 CV Horwitz, and for reproducibility (F-test), Ftest<Ftable, for accuracy testing in terms of Recovery=(98-102)%, inter-analyst comparison, and test result comparison with CRM value (t-test), ttest<ttable as well as the minimum criteria for measurement of relative uncertainty<5%. Therefore, the test results of the modified ISO 13658:2000 method for Zn determination in ZnS concentrate have fulfilled all the validity parameters of the test results.

Abstract

Lead sulfide (PbS) concentrate is derived from the sulfide mineral galena. In nature, galena must first undergo a concentration process to become PbS concentrate. The determination of lead (Pb) content in the PbS concentrate is carried out using complexometric methods, referring to the modified ISO 13545:2000 standard during the preparation stage. In this research, the validity of the test results was assessed using several parameters, including precision test (repeatability and reproducibility), accuracy (%recovery) and estimation of measurement uncertainty. Certified reference material (CRM) Pb353, with a Pb content range of 58.20-64.33% was used as a sample in this study. The results showed an average Pb content of 61.11% for analyst A and 61.00% for analyst B in CRM Pb353. The research successfully met the precision testing requirements for repeatability (RSD 0.46% for analyst A and 0.39% for analyst B < 2/3 coefficient variance (CV) Horwitz 1.44%) and reproducibility (F-test 1.34 < F-table 4,28 and P-value 0.37 > significance level 0.05). Accuracy was also demonstrated with %recovery (analyst A 9.06–100.53% and analyst B 99.23–99.98%), as well as the estimation of measurement uncertainty (μrelative 2.27% < 5%). Therefore, the determination of Pb content using complexometric methods with modified preparation techniques in the PbS concentrate ensures the validity of the results.

Abstract

Currently in Indonesia, propellant research is still rarely carried out due to bureaucratic and budgetary problems. This study aimed to determine the optimum composition of propellant using local sources of nitrate compounds based on its combustion heat value and to study the effect of the composition on its combustion heat value. The propellant composition used in this study consists of oxidizing agents (local nitrate compounds), fuel (Aluminium), binder (polyester-based resin), and additive (catalyst). A bomb calorimetry method (ASTM D5865/5865-19) was used to determine the combustion heat value of the propellant. The results showed that the heat of combustion of local content nitrate compound-based propellants was high (> 1500 cal/g), adding binder to the propellant composition increases the heat of combustion. Ammonium nitrate-based propellant has the highest heat of combustion value of 3,788 cal/g. The optimum binder composition in the propellant was 33% (w/w). Based on this study, local source of nitrate compounds has potential to be used for development of propellant, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, it can encourage rocket research in Indonesia as a capital for the development of defense equipment to be less expensive.
