Abstract

This research compares the translation ideologies applied to onomatopoeia in level two children’s literature on the StoryWeaver website. Translators at Story Weaver often face a dilemma between preserving the original sound (onomatopoeia) or adapting it to the perception of children in the target culture. It aims to provide insights into effective translation techniques for onomatopoeia and to contribute to translation theory by examining the ideologies on cross-cultural understanding in children's literature. The study focuses on translation products, using linguistic and translation data, including techniques, methods, and ideologies. Data sources comprised documents and informants. The documents included nine children’s literature translated by The Story Weaver Community, The Asian Foundation, and the Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa while informants were raters. Data collection involved document analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Data analysis employed domain analysis, taxonomy, component analysis, and cultural themes to identify, categorize, and understand how translation techniques and ideologies affect cultural understanding. The findings indicate that translators from The StoryWeaver Community and The Asian Foundation generally favor target language-oriented techniques (adaptation, established equivalent) with adaptation methods and domestication ideologies. In contrast, translators from Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa (Agency for Language Development and Cultivation.) often employ source language-oriented techniques (Pure borrowing, naturalized borrowing., literal), use literal translation methods and foreignization ideologies. The study hopes to serve as a reference for translating onomatopoeia, offering valuable insights into how different translation techniques affect the translation ideologies outcomes.

Abstract

Instruments play an important role in determining better research results. One form of instrument is a questionnaire, which is the accuracy and reliability of which researchers should pay more attention to. This study tested the validity and reliability of a research questionnaire on the factors that cause violent behavior toward nurses in health services. A descriptive research design was used with a sample of 45 respondents, using purposive random sampling. The questionnaire variables and instruments consist of 88 statements with a Likert scale consisting of nurses' therapeutic communication attitudes 10 statements; nurses' self-concept six statements; perceptions related to nurses' workload 14 statements; nurses' job satisfaction 15 statements; perceptions pertaining to nurses' work experience 12 statements, quality of service 22 statements, and incidents of violent behavior by nurses nine statements. Analysis of validity and reliability tests with a computer program: the results are expressed based on the validity and reliability test results table. The statement is said to be valid if r results > r table person product moment df = n-2 = 45-2 = 43 with a significance level of 5%, so the r table value is 0.301. At the same time, reliability is stated if the Cronbach's alpha value is > 0.6. The research results showed that 77 statements (87.5%) were valid, and 11 statements (12.5%) were invalid. The average level of variable reliability is 0.822, which is included in the good category. The conclusions of the questionnaire were declared valid and reliable for use in research.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Masculinity is commonly associated with men, which leads children’s stories to reinforce narrow gender stereotypes. As these stories are translated and circulated across cultures, translation choices may either maintain or reshape such representations. However, the translation of female masculinity in children’s stories remains underexplored, particularly through transitivity perspective. This study examines StoryWeaver translations portraying female masculinity to analyze how masculinity is identified using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), how it is translated, and how translation techniques affect its representation. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with five purposively selected StoryWeaver stories. Credibility was ensured through data source triangulation via document analysis and methodological triangulation through focus group discussion (FGD). SFL was used to identify constructions of masculinity, while translation techniques analysis examined how masculinity was translated from the source to the target language. A double case study design treated the five stories as individual cases for cross-case comparison across different authors and translators. Data were analysed using Spradley’s ethnographic procedures. Findings: Five forms of masculinity were identified, realized through material, mental, relational, behavioral, and existential processes, revealing how female masculinity is linguistically constructed in children’s narratives. Established equivalents dominated the translations, while deletion also influenced the representation of masculinity. Conclusion: Translation techniques play a role in shaping how female masculinity is represented, with established equivalents tending to maintain meaning and deletion leading to shifts in representation. Originality: The study addresses the limited research on translating female masculinity in children’s literature and shows how translation choices shape gender meanings for young readers across languages and cultures.

Abstract

Indonesian migrant children in Malaysia face educational and identity-related challenges because some of them have limited access to formal schooling and grow up in multilingual environments that may reduce their exposure to Indonesian language and culture. This community service program aimed to strengthen Indonesian language and cultural literacy among Indonesian children at the Segambut Learning Center, Kuala Lumpur. The program was conducted through a participatory educational approach involving coordination with learning center administrators, preparation of Indonesian folklore-based learning materials, interactive storytelling, guided reading, role play, traditional songs, and reflective evaluation. The target participants were 45 Indonesian children aged 5 to 11 years. Data were collected through observation, short oral questions, retelling activities, and feedback from the learning center. The results indicate that folklore-based activities created an engaging literacy space, encouraged children to listen, respond, retell stories, and use Indonesian expressions in meaningful contexts. The activities also introduced cultural values through stories such as Maling Kundang, Roro Jonggrang, and Cindelaras. This program shows that culturally responsive storytelling can serve as an accessible strategy to support heritage language maintenance, cultural awareness, and national identity formation among Indonesian migrant children. Continued mentoring and structured reading materials are recommended to sustain the impact of the program.
