Abstract

Questions are always present in people’s lives as they are used in daily conversation, not only as a tool to initiate a conversation but also to keep that conversation alive and at the same time to gain information from the interlocutor. This research aims to investigate the syntactic forms of questions and their pragmatic functions found in a TV series entitled The Office Season 1 as the data source. The data used in the research were interrogative utterances, their answers, and the context of the conversation. The results show that 409 questions were found, consisting of 214 (52%) yes/no questions and 195 (48%) WH questions. What outnumbers the other question words with a total of 117 (60%) questions. These questions were used to serve 27 pragmatics functions, seeking the most frequent function, amounting to 140 questions or 34% of the whole data. The dominant use of the questions word what and the function seeking information might be due to the setting of the place where the conversation is held, that is, The Office.

Abstract

This study investigates the speech act of promising found in the first five episodes of the TV series Gilmore Girls (2000). It categorizes utterances containing promises based on the directness strategies. The direct promising strategy is identified using the IFID of the speech act of promising, that is the performative verb promise, while the indirect promising strategy is identified and categorized into 10 types of indirect promising strategy proposed by Ariff and Mugableh (2013): pure promise, discourse conditional, tautological-like expression, body-part expression, self-aggrandizing expression, time expression, courtesy-like expression, swearing expression, adjacency pair, and false promise.  The results show that the most commonly used strategy was the indirect promising strategy (94.3%) as the characters in the series tend to make promises casually by not using the performative verb promise. Then, pure promise strategy is the most frequently used type of indirect promising strategy (31.3%). In addition, there are two distinctive types of indirect promising strategies found in the TV series, i.e., hidden promise and sarcastic promise strategies. This finding suggests that there are many other ways to make promises besides using the performative verb, promise and the modal verb will since the context of the conversations sometimes indicates future acts that a speaker commits to doing.

Abstract

AbstractThe emergence of social media as a new channel of communication has produced a new form discourse which has different characteristics compared to the formerly established conventional discourses. These differences do not only lie in how the messages are delivered but also in their  structural components which contribute to the unity of the text, namely cohesion and coherence. Cohesion, as the marker of coherence, is realized by language units (words, phrases, or clauses) known as cohesive markers which indicate the relationship between parts of discourse either grammatically or lexically. This article aims at describing the composition and distribution of  cohesive markers within the Facebook conversations along with their roles in determining the characteristics of the discourse. The results show that the cohesive system of Facebook conversations are dominated by references, ellipses, repetitions, and conjunctions. The frequent appearances of certain referential cohesivemarkers indicate Facebook conversations as typical of interactive discourse whereas numerous ellipses and particular conjunctionsreflectthe informal mode of communication carried out through the social media. On the other hand, various repetitions show the existence of topical cohesionwithin the conversations.

Abstract

Unlike previous studies focusing on disciplines and genres displaying regularities in terms of findings, recent studies investigating cultural differences in authorial presence, even in the same language and context suggest contradictory findings, and thus, emphasize the importance of further research to clarify native and non-native English-speaking authors’ variation of showing presence overtly in their texts. Here, we aim at exploring how Indonesian and British authorial presence is linguistically shown in applied linguistics research articles (RAs), and investigating the roles of the linguistic markers of authorial presence in their immediate context. Using data from the two groups of academic authors, we demonstrate that the native English-speaking authors in general tend to be more explicitly visible than their non-native English peers in English RAs and indicate a stronger preference for displaying reader-friendly attitude by showing presence when signposting and providing explicit guidance to their audience.

Abstract

An abstract has important role in summarizing and promoting its research article. Because of the important role, abstracts contain discourse patterns that have communicative purposes. This study aims at investigating discourse patterns and its linguistic characteristics of applied linguistics article abstracts in English. The research corpus consisted of 30 research article abstracts in English written by English native speakers and published in Applied Linguistics journal and Journal of English for Academic Purposes in 2016-2018. The data were analyzed by using five-move abstract pattern proposed by Pho (2013). The results showed that the common patterns of the abstracts were the patterns which contained five moves and four moves. Furthermore, the abstracts tended to use present tense and active voice. It can be concluded the results provide new findings among study of discourse patterns of English research article abstracts written by English native speakers, especially in applied linguistics.

Abstract

ABSTRACTChildren’s phonological development is somewhat foreseeable, yet there are certain sounds that appear at different ages across children. However, there are some general guidelines which can be used to analyze the phonological development of a child. This study aims to examine the phonological development process of an American English native speaker named Brielle in producing consonants from the age of three to six using the speech sound development milestones provided by Sander (1972). The data are taken from youtube videos of Brielle when appearing on an American talkshow called “The Ellen Show”. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study to elaborate the phonological development of Brielle. The result shows that Brielle completed her phonological development at the age of six. It can also be concluded from the study that some consonants appear earlier or later thatn the phonological development milestones set by Sander (1972). During the process of acquiring consonants, she replaced the consonant which she could not produce with another sound with similar features, such as replacing the liquid sound /l/ with the glide sound /j/.

Abstract

Cohesion is an essential component of discourse that will help the readers comprehend the articles’ flow idea. Conjunctive adverbial is one of the cohesive devices that is commonly used in academic proses. This research aims to observe the forms, the sentential positions, and the cohesive meaning of conjunctive adverbials. Popular scientific articles are chosen to be data sources. The articles were downloaded from scientific magazines. Eighteen articles were from National Geography, and forty-six articles were from Psychology Today. Corpus linguistics is used as the approach of this study. The data are processed using Wordsmith 4 apps. The data selected are tabulated in Ms. Excel and analyzed using cohesion theory suggested by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The results show that conjunctive adverbials are dominated in word forms and followed by phrase forms in both magazines. The sentential positions of conjunctive adverbials are most frequently placed in an initial position followed by the magazines’ medial positions. The end position of conjunctive adverbials is not found. The most frequent conjunctive adverbial function is adversative, and the least frequent is causal in both magazines.

Abstract

An academic writing, especially a research article, is commonly, but vaguely considered that it has to be impersonal. In other words, there is a common discouragement to express writer identities in academic writings. Yet, it is recently discovered that personal attribution has such a significant role to display the interaction both between the authors and the readers and the authors and other researchers in the field. In this paper, I investigate the linguistic forms used to indicate writer identity in a number of selected research articles, and how they are used in terms of their clusivity as well as authorial self these linguistic forms construct. The data were taken from two reputable international journals: 10 research articles taken from Genome Biology, and the other 10 were taken from Molecular Systems Biology. These data were analyzed with the help of Wordsmith 5.0 (Scott 2008), an offline application which allows us to discover the occurrences of authorial references used in research articles and make concordances. A qualitative analysis was also conducted to examine the clusivity and the authorial self each linguistic form expresses. Classification on authorial selves was based on a taxonomy proposed by Tang & John (1999). The findings of this research are then aimed at indicating a tendency of writers in attributing themselves in academic writing, especially in biology research articles, where authors show more authority in their writing with the use of frequent authorial references expressing themselves as the recounters of the research process.

Abstract

The presence of an opinion editorial (op-ed) page has provided room for the public to articulate their ideas about the recent salient issues at no cost. The notion that the authors of an op-ed article could express their ideas and arguments in public space makes them need certain devices like hedges to protect themselves from any negative consequences such as rejection from readers if in fact their argument is considered false. This article is intended to investigate the use of impersonal constructions as hedging devices in 45 Indonesian opinion editorial articles published by three leading national newspapers: Kompas, Tempo, and Republika. Impersonal construction in this case refers to a grammatical construction that avoids the use of a human subject in the sentence. This construction includes the use of agentless passive voice and abstract rhetors. A qualitative research design is applied in this study. This study reveals 56 occurrences of impersonal construction with details of 53 data belonging to the agentless passive voice category and 3 data belonging to the abstract rhetors category in the 45 articles examined.  The use of such constructions in op-ed articles can be a means to protect the authors from the consequences of being blamed if in any case, the argument they stated is different from the reality. Furthermore, this construction can also be used to avoid the subjectivity of the claim and direct the focus of the argument to the content of the text and not the authors.Â
