Abstract

ABSTRACT The language behaviour of clients’ reflection journey on art psychotherapy in the final stage of art psychotherapy sessions entitled ‘Reflect Interview’ reflects their childhood experiences that become a lifetime memory. In this paper, the topic of how the clients can construct their conceptual ideas of childhood experiences is discussed under a cognitive approach to language study. This article argues that: 1) There are REFLECTION SPACE, REALITY SPACE, DEPICTION SPACE and POSSIBILITY SPACE of the child-gendered mental spaces in the reflection journey on art psychotherapy, 2) Subject-Verb combinations, connectives and adverbs as the space builder on the child-gendered mental spaces and 3) Intersection between gender and child has experienced by the psychotherapy clients are generally related to weakness, depression, struggle and difficulties that become children's memories during their lifetime. These results are supported by a few background cases and government role illustrations in Indonesia. Keywords: Art psychotherapy; child-gendered mental spaces; space builder.

Abstract

In this corpus-based study, we address the issue of authorial presence in English research articles (RAs) by native and non-native English scholars in the field of second language writing. Our purposes are to compare the frequencies of authorial presence and to examine discourse functions of authorial presence in the native and non-native English scholars RAs. To achieve these purposes, 48 RAs were collected from two Scopus-indexed journals, namely Journal of Second Language Writing and Assessing Writing. Overall, our finding suggests that native and non-native English scholars are different in terms of degree of visibility in which native English scholars are more visible than their non-native counterparts in their RAs. Furthermore, our functional analysis of authorial presence indicates that both native and non-native English scholars tend to use authorial presence more for the same purposes, i.e. to describe the research procedures and show the organizations of the texts. The similarity between the two groups may be caused by the international publishing context and the disciplinary writing practice in second language writing. In addition, these findings may be invaluable to material designs in English writing, especially in Indonesia, to assist students as novice writers to consider their explicit presence in their RAs.

Abstract

In this paper, we attempt to examine the identity of researchers in writing their research articles (RAs) by exploring the linguistic forms indicating the identity of the authors in English RAs, determining the functions these forms serve in the discourse, and revealing the socio-cultural aspects implied from the use of the authorial identity. We will identify the English first-person pronouns used by native and non-native authors in Scopus-indexed linguistics and education academic journal articles. This study applied the corpus linguistic method to collect the data and to draw conclusions about the authorial identity presented in the articles. Hopefully, this paper will help to not only comprehend the role and the importance of the authorial presence but also encourage researchers to represent their identity in their own RAs.

Abstract

As a language taught almost everywhere in the world, English variations emerge, and they bring the characteristics of foreign learners’ first languages. Under this assumption, this study aimed to seek how Javanese phonological elements interfere with the production of English voiceless stops by Javanese students on a gender basis. Data in the form of sound recordings were collected from 36 students which consisted of 18 males and 18 females from two prominent universities in Yogyakarta. Using Praat, the voice onset time (VOT) of each sound was noted and processed using Microsoft Excel. The study result showed that based on the VOT means of 514 data, regardless of the position, both male and female students produced short-lagged /p/ and long-lagged /t/ and /k/, forming a pattern of /k/ > /t/ > /p/. Voiceless stops at the initial position have longer VOT than the medial position. Male students produced more phoneme shifts than female students. Male students seemed to be more Javanese-influenced in the way they produced more [ɽ], the retroflex version of t-flap [ɾ] as the English /t/ variation, at the medial position although they generally produced longer VOT than female students.

Abstract

WhatsApp is an option for communicating in the current era, regardless people’s background. In the world of education, for instance, both students and lecturers also use this application for teaching and learning activities. Unfortunately, not many students communicate with this media properly so the messages sent to their lecturers tend to be impolite, especially when the messages are sent in English. One indicator of this is the absence of greetings in the message. None of the previous research has discussed the specific element(s) of a message that becomes the gap of this research. This research aims to find out what greetings students usually use when sending English messages to lecturers and how important greetings are in sending a text message. This quantitative research involved 60 lecturers who teach in English Department or teach English subjects throughout Indonesia who filled out questionnaires and expressed their opinions on several English text messages sent by students. The result shows that there are several types of greetings used by students, such as "Assalamualaikum", "Hello", "Good morning/Good afternoon /Good evening", and also "Excuse me...” Furthermore, 53,3% respondents agree that greetings are one of the most important aspects in sending a message politely.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding the meaning, similarities, and differences of the use of modal auxiliary verbs in editorial articles from an Indonesian newspaper, The Jakarta Post, regarding the writers’ various linguistic backgrounds.  The data were collected from 20 editorial articles written by Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers using corpus linguistics software #Lancsbox v. 6.0, which found 286 instances of eight modal auxiliary verbs. The most commonly employed modal auxiliary verbs by both Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers are can, will, should, may, would, could, must, and might, respectively. Biber et al.’s (1999) classification of deontic and epistemic meanings was used to find the meaning of the modal auxiliary verbs. The results of this study show that Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers used modal auxiliary verbs significantly differently, suggesting that linguistic and cultural background might affect the use of modal auxiliary verbs, especially in newspaper editorial articles. Furthermore, the results also show that both groups of writers used more modal auxiliary verbs with epistemic meaning rather than with deontic meaning, indicating their commitment to the truth of their argument.

Abstract

Today, LinkedIn is a business-focused social media platform widely preferred for professional networking. The discourse produced in a LinkedIn profile summary can significantly enhance one's personal branding. This study examines the personal branding strategies embedded in the move structure of LinkedIn profile summaries. A genre analysis approach elaborated with the components of personal branding, provides insights into the creation of an effective profile summary. The results of this study show that the self-strength component is a mandatory element in a profile summary. Strengths can be highlighted by presenting experience, skills, educational background, and position. Additionally, there are optional components that can further enhance personal branding, such as presenting achievements, goals, and unique qualities. These findings serve as a reference for LinkedIn users in developing a stronger personal brand through the creation of an effective and efficient profile summary.
