Abstract

Calophyllum incrassatum is one of the plant species of the Calophylloceae family and is found endemic in Kalimantan and Sumatra. This study aims to isolate chromanone acid compounds from the stem bark of C. incrassatum and determine the relationship between structure and activity against murine Leukemia P-388 cells. The extraction method used was maceration using methanol solvent, partitioned with n-hexane and ethyl acetate solvents. Separation and purification of n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts by vacuum liquid chromatography, pressed column, and radial. Two chromanone acids derivatives, isoapetalic acid (1), and methyl isoapetalic (2), have been successfully isolated from the stem bark of Calophyllum incrassatum. The structures of the two compounds were identified and elucidated using spectroscopic techniques such as UV, IR, and 1D and 2D NMR. The cytotoxic activity against murine leukemia P-388 cells of compounds 1-2 showed IC50 values of 8.51 and 1.47 µg/mL, respectively, and compound (2) exhibited high cytotoxic activity

Abstract

Education is critical because, without education, it is difficult for society to develop and will be left behind. Education is one of the efforts to improve the quality of human energy sources, encompassing both physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. The problem-based learning (PBL) learning model is one of the learning models that can help students develop their critical thinking skills to solve problems. This study aims to determine the influence of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' critical thinking skills. The method used in this study is a literature review. A total of 15 relevant articles were selected and analyzed to determine the influence of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' critical thinking skills. The results of this literature review indicate that the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model has a significant impact on improving students' critical thinking skills. Through Problem-Based Learning (PBL), students engage in a real-world problem-solving process, encouraging them to think analytically, critically, and creatively.

Abstract

In Indonesia, cancer is one of the diseases with a high mortality rate. In 2018, there were 348,809 cases of cancer, with 16.7% of all cases being breast cancer. In Indonesia, breast and cervical cancer are the most common types. The purpose of this study was to determine the secondary metabolite content of compounds and the anticancer activity of kamandin saebo extract against T47D breast cancer cells from kamandin saebo (Glossocardia leschenaultii [Cass.] Veldkamp) samples using various types of solvents. The methods used were sample preparation, moisture content analysis, extraction using the ultrasonic method, secondary metabolite analysis using reagents, and anticancer testing against T47D breast cancer cells. The plants were washed thoroughly to obtain powder and sieved with a 60 mesh, with a moisture content of 11.5% (w/w), and the extraction results obtained concentrated extracts from various types of solvents. The secondary metabolite content of kamandin saebo is flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, and tannins. The anticancer activity of methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts, with IC50 values of 340, 272, and 107 µg/ml, respectively. The n-hexane extract has anticancer potential compared to ethyl acetate and methanol extracts.

Abstract

Weekly religious study activities are one form of religious programs that function not only as a means of enhancing Islamic understanding but also as an effective medium for strengthening social solidarity among youth. This study aims to describe the implementation of weekly religious study activities, analyze their impact on improving social solidarity, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors of these activities among the youth of Jami’ Al-Falah Mosque in Pragaan, Sumenep. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the head of the mosque youth organization and five youth members. The results show that the weekly religious study activities are conducted regularly and systematically with a series of religious and social activities. These activities have a positive impact on enhancing social solidarity, which is reflected in indicators such as mutual cooperation, mutual assistance, cooperation, and brotherhood. Supporting factors include support from mosque administrators and parents, strong collective spirit among members, and a friendly and comfortable atmosphere during the activities. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include members’ busy schedules, weather conditions, and transportation limitations. Overall, weekly religious study activities play a significant role as a religious and social development medium in strengthening social solidarity among mosque youth.

Abstract

The application of technology in English language education is increasingly widespread, one of which is through the Duolingo app. This study aims to evaluate the impact of using the Duolingo app on students' motivation in learning English as well as identify the specific factors that contribute to such motivation. The research method used was a mixed approach, combining quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data was collected through a structured questionnaire with a Likert scale to measure students' motivation and contributing factors. Qualitative data was obtained through focus group discussions (FGDs) to explore students' experiences and perceptions in depth. The results showed that the Duolingo app significantly increased students' motivation in learning English. Findings from the questionnaire indicated that 53.3% of respondents strongly agreed that Duolingo was effective in increasing their motivation, while 46.7% agreed with the statement. The focus group discussion corroborated these findings by emphasising the role of gamification features, such as points and badges, as well as self-paced learning features in making the learning process more enjoyable and improving English confidence and comprehension. The findings are consistent with previous research highlighting the effectiveness of gamification and self-paced learning features and make a novel contribution by exploring the overall impact of different app features. Limitations of this study include the limited sample size and reliance on self-report data, which may affect the generalisability of the results. Future research is recommended to use a larger and more diverse sample and more varied data collection methods, including direct observation and in-depth interviews. Future research could also explore the long-term effects of using Duolingo and the differences in its impact based on students' educational background or initial ability level. It is hoped that these recommendations will provide a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of this app in the broader context of English language education.

Abstract

Education plays a very important role in improving the quality of human resources. One of the main problems in education in Indonesia is the low learning outcomes of students, partly due to the use of inappropriate learning methods. The problem-based learning (PBL) model is one approach that can improve students' critical thinking skills because it emphasizes active and independent solving of real problems. This study aims to determine the effect of the problem-based learning (PBL) model on students' critical thinking skills in Economics class XI at MA As Salamah in the 2024/2025 academic year. The background of this study is the low critical thinking skills of students due to conventional learning methods. The approach used was quantitative with simple linear regression analysis. The research instruments were tested for validity and reliability, with all items declared valid (r > 0.306) and reliable (α = 0.802 for X and 0.797 for Y). The normality test showed that the residual data were normally distributed (p = 0.200; Monte Carlo Sig. = 0.841). The regression analysis results showed an R value of 0.965 and an R² value of 0.932, and the t-test showed a significant effect of variable X on Y (p < 0.001). Thus, PBL has a positive and significant effect on students' critical thinking skills.
