Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Dharmayasa IGNP, Sugiana IP, Putri PYA, Boonyasana K. 2024. Assessment of soil fraction, carbon storage capacity, and rate of carbon uptake from three coastal ecosystems: Mangroves, seagrass, and mudflats in Benoa Bay, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2541-2549. Coastal habitats, known as blue carbon ecosystems, are highly productive at absorbing and storing carbon. Most carbon is stored as soil organic carbon, and its quantity can vary depending on various factors, including the presence of plants such as mangroves and seagrass, and environmental conditions, including soil fraction. This study quantifies soil carbon stored and its burial rate in three primary coastal ecosystems: mangroves, seagrasses, and mudflats. The ashing method (loss on ignition) is used to quantify carbon content, which is then converted into soil carbon storage and burial rate. Gravimetry and the settling time method are used to determine the soil fraction. We also measure the soil and water properties directly during the sampling time. This study revealed significant soil carbon stock and burial rate variations across different ecosystems. The order of ecosystems with the most extensive carbon stock and burial rate is as follows: mangrove (69-145 tC ha-1 and 1.6-3.4 tCha-1yr-1)>seagrass (63-75 tC ha-1 and 1.5-1.7 tCha-1yr-1)>mudflat (49-61 tC ha-1 and 1.2-1.4 tCha-1yr-1). Mangroves with natural growth have a higher carbon storage capacity than rehabilitated ones. Soil carbon content is highly correlated with the soil and water pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), water content, bulk density, and soil type. The findings demonstrate that carbon absorption capability varies among coastal habitats, with vegetated environments exhibiting higher carbon storage levels. Converting land, particularly mudflats, into seagrass beds or mangrove forests may maximize the efficiency of coastal ecosystems as carbon sinks. However, it should be noted that these findings are only estimates, and the precise measurement numbers may differ due to seasonal circumstances or reclamation activities, which might cause oscillations in sedimentation rates. These variations, in turn, could affect the levels of carbon stored and the speed at which it is buried.

Abstract

Abstract. Dharmayasa IGNP, Sugiana IP, Anantanasakul P. 2025. Mangrove species distribution across soil texture gradients in Benoa Bay and Nusa Lembongan, Bali Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 2908-2915. This study unveils the crucial role of mangrove ecosystems in enhancing coastal resilience and mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration and shoreline stabilization. This study identifies strong relationships between soil particle composition (sand, silt, clay, and gravel) and the distribution of mangrove species across five genera-dominated zones (Rhizophora, Sonneratia, Avicennia, Bruguiera, and Ceriops) in Bali, Indonesia. By establishing 20 plots at two sites, Benoa Bay and Nusa Lembongan, and quantitatively measuring stand structure (tree and sapling density, diameter, canopy cover, and Mangrove Health Index (MHI) and soil parameters (texture, pH, water content, bulk density, and total organic matter), this study revealed that Ceriops tagal dominates soils with 35-45% silt and clay content; Bruguiera gymnorrhiza thrives in sandy soils exceeding 60% sand; and Sonneratia alba is associated with substrates containing over 20% gravel. Principal component analysis and Pearson correlation reveal significant negative effects of gravel on canopy cover (r: -0.73, p<0.01) and MHI (r: -0.74, p<0.01), and a positive correlation between sand content and sapling density (r: 0.56, p<0.01). These findings not only underscore the critical role of soil texture in mangrove distribution and forest health but also emphasize the need to consider edaphic conditions in restoration and conservation strategies. This knowledge is vital for enhancing ecosystem sustainability and biodiversity.

Abstract

Abstract

Recurring inundation in the Jalan Raya Pengambengan area, Bali, indicates a decline in the drainage infrastructure's Level of Service (LoS), leading to road structure degradation. This functional failure is primarily driven by non-structural factors, specifically deficiencies in Operation and Maintenance (O&M) management due to high sedimentation rates and waste accumulation. This study aims to evaluate drainage management effectiveness using a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from 30 respondents residing along the primary channel, supported by field observations of the channel's physical condition. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed a sharp disparity: the community possesses a very high understanding of infrastructure function (index 81.66%), yet actual maintenance participation remains low (index 59.83%). The Spearman Rank correlation test confirmed no significant linear relationship (rs=−0,079) between technical literacy and maintenance behavior. These findings demonstrate a knowledge-behavior gap phenomenon, where the degradation of hydraulic capacity is caused by the diffusion of responsibility regarding public assets. The study concludes that restoring drainage function requires a strategic transformation from mere physical intervention to strengthened institutionalized participatory asset management to sustainably mitigate flood risks.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the comparison between the Implementation Budget Plan or Rencana Anggaran Pelaksanaan (RAP) and the Cost Budget Plan or Rencana Anggaran Biaya (RAB) on the work of brick walls and floor tiles in the construction of the Special Official House of the Main Official of the Tabanan Police. The background of this study is based on the importance of controlling construction project costs so that the implementation of work is in accordance with the plan and achieves budget efficiency. The research method used was a quantitative descriptive method with data collection through field observations, interviews, and documentation in the form of RAB, shop drawings, and as-built drawings. The analysis was carried out by calculating the actual work volume, material requirements, and comparing the RAP costs to the RAB. The results of the study showed that the comparison of the RAP costs to the RAB on the installation of brick walls showed a difference, where the costs calculated in the RAP of Rp 83,133,400 tended to better reflect the actual conditions in the field compared to the RAB of Rp 85,286,651 with a difference of Rp 2.153.251 and a percentage of 97.48%. In the installation of floor tiles, there was also a significant deviation, where the cost calculated in the RAP of Rp. 107,209,600 tended to be greater than the RAB value of Rp. 79,108,732 with a difference of -Rp.28.100.868 and a percentage of -1112%. This difference has an impact on cost discrepancies, so that the RAB does not fully reflect the real cost needs in the field. Thus, a comparative analysis of the RAP and RAB is important as a basis for evaluating project costs so that work implementation is more effective, efficient, and according to the planned quality.

Abstract

The impact of flooding extends beyond physical and infrastructural damage, affecting social, economic, and environmental dimensions. This study aims to identify the key factors influencing flooding by developing a decision tree model. The research method applies the C4.5 algorithm to build a decision tree model using flood factors such as rainfall, soil type, elevation, land use, and distance from rivers. The model is then applied to 57 past flood data events to determine key contributors to flooding in Denpasar City, Bali, Indonesia. The analysis showed that land elevation is the most influential factor, with areas below 28 meters above sea level having a 71% likelihood of being flood vulnerability. Additionally, the model reveals unknown patterns contributing to flood vulnerability among the factors considered. These insights give a deeper understanding of how these factors combine to affect flood vulnerability. The model's effectiveness was evaluated using a confusion matrix, resulting in an accuracy rate of 90%, a precision rate of 100%, a sensitivity rate of 90%, a specificity rate of 100%, and a F1 Score rate of 94%, demonstrating its strong predictive power in identifying areas at risk of flood vulnerability. Although this study is limited by the availability of data, the focus on Denpasar City, and the potential omission of other relevant attributes, it advances flood risk assessment by applying machine learning to provide practical insights that could enhance flood management strategies, with potential applications to other urban areas facing similar risks.
